Tviks - first off. That was disgusting. Are you human? You dodged the option hunter while doing the ice cube part.

I've never made it to the last level so I had no idea the hitboxes on those bouncing brain thing were that large (larger than the sprite).

Level 2-1 makes me want to puke from difficulty.

Your round 2 moai mini boss fight is fucking incredible.

Watching you almost pull of 2-6 with no options is insane.

Crazy replay there. I hope you get good enough to do something even more sick like a 4 or 5 looper.

Anyone know what the record is on this game?
Thank you tviks and landshark.
Very nice clip indeed of a balls hard game.

Die at Stage 2 bonus stage, and then lost all 10+ lifes in stock... Silly death.

Hey who said 'lifes to option' is not a good idea.

PS2
Aquas - 347,640 - 1-3 - Type B

Milked the umbrellas a ton. I think that eventually I may be able to due in the third stage, and be able to beat the boss with one speedup, one option and one missle. I got pretty close one time... but if I become able to do that, then I can manipulate my score by dying on the third stage like I have done right here.

I got to 1-6 in another run, but the score was lesser.

But man, I hate that 1-3 Boss... hate 'em.

I really surprised myself here. Once I got the 1CC I figured "welp, time to lose all my lives on the first screen of 2-1", but once I managed to powerup a bit I actually cruised pretty easily. Deaths in High Speed proved to be unrecoverable, though. That level is a lot harder when the turrets actually shoot at you.

Now that I can FINALLY get past that goddamn bubble hell level consistently, I can start enjoying this game.

Arcade
Ruldra - 239,540 - 1-3 - Type B

Repeated deaths on the boss made get a lot of points from that section right before him.

By the way, is the difficulty the same on arcade and ps2 versions?

Because the st.3 boss is a god awful asshole, here's a guide to time the bastard out.

Legend: "Back," refers to 2nd diamond laser hole from the core. "Front" refers to the first diamond laser hole from the core. The number represents the number of times it shoots, and correspondingly, how many times of that pattern you stay in that spot untill the next pattern change in which you change position.
The patterns are represented in phases which are roman numeraled here. After each phase, it goes to shooting its spread shot USUALLY 2 times where you should dart out of its range. Then you gotta dart back in.

I. Back 2, Front 2
II. Back 1, Front 2, Back 1
III. Back 1, Front 1, Back 1
IV. Repeat phase II.
-after this point the boss can approach you, and shoots once or twice
V. Repeat Phase II. Back 1
-fly out of its way as it fires one last time and times out... BOOM!

OOOOTHERwise, you better count on the slowdown of full options to take down this fuck, an option trap wouldn't hurt either.

I'd also like to note that you can use this strategy in a recovery from the boss. The result of this is that you can milk the umbrellas for a high scoring run. I figure you might as well (if you're interested in a high score) because recovering is near impossible most everywhere else in the game, and may make those lives come to some use. Arguably, you might want your life stock for cube rush attempts, however. I don't know if it's productive to try recovering at the cube rush part of the game, yet, though as I've yet to make it happen.

Yes, this guide should be correct. Just tested it. And time'd out the boss for my first time... albiet, I got destroyed on the very last shot when it times out. lol. Much better! It's a pretty simple pattern to recognize, thankfully, just gotta have a calm head while executing it. Fuck you core!

I gave it a try yesterday and that guide seems to be correct. My problem now is the position of the 2nd hole...when I think I'm safe, the laser just barely scratches me and I die.

No miss up to stage 2-7, where I ran into a dead end. After losing a bunch of lives to the boss, I thought my run was finished but then I noticed that the boss's lasers can't hit you if you're close to the ground. After that I waited until he timed out, managed to recover and made it to the third loop, where I got destroyed pretty fast.

Whee. I have motivation to practice the crystal stage and the cube rush now, I still have yet to play the 10th stage at all :D
This game really makes your blood boil which is why I love it. This was also my first time passing the fire stage, and plant stage in a full run.

Oh yeah, congrats on the mil Ruldra. Million is usually a big deal in Gradius games :)

If you saw the moai heads, that was 1-5. 1-4 is the high speed stage, and it does in fact count as a stage as seen in the practice mode. Just pointin' that out... :)

I'm finally close to 10 hours of play on the PS2 version, gonna be able to play with EDIT and stuff.... yaaay.

Ya. If using spread missle type, don't use your missles, stick to Ripple. The missles' blast radius' will just block your view of oncoming fire fragments. Also, just keep shooting and destroying most of what's coming at you, and dodging the fragments. The slowdown will help out with this. I grab the third speedup for this stage. Once you get to the first two pyramid shape walls, you can use the space adjacent to the top one as a temporary safe spot, then go back to destroying everything. May not need to use it, but it'll buy you a little time. The fireballs have predetermined paths, because of this I memorized a pea-shooter route for this stage, which sounds kinda bonkers I know, and it is, because even if you successfully reach plant stage, it's hard to power up properly.

No-miss up to the fire stage where I died in the last checkpoint. Thankfully that part isn't hard to recover and made it to the plant stage, but didn't survive long there.

I got the PS2 version recently so practicing is much easier now.

Spread bomb got annoying to me, so I switched to Type D. I was pretty happy with this run until the 7th stage. I heard the BGM and was like, "Dammit I forgot about the fire stage! It's over... >_<"
