Meter edit is allowed, which is why I have a "meter" column. :) It's just that everyone who's posted since the old thread was lost is using the default setup.

gs68 - 917,480 - 2R_4ST - Vic Viper - S?OLDM - Limit

Didn't use Shield for obvious reasons, Force Field didn't seem too useful, and Guard gives me a pretty big hitbox.

Vic Viper is the most versatile ship IMO - missiles have reasonable range, Double level 2 is LETHAL, and Laser is not too bad.

I finally lifed the first loop! In fact, I managed to make it all the way up to MadSkin before loosing a string of lives, cleared him, managed to recover in stage 6 and then botched the boss. But I don't care about dieing there.. since I finally got my perfect first loop on video. I hope to have the commentary recorded by this weekend. :)

Anyhow, new score:

I just recieved this game yesterday, and I've enjoyed it immensely. The last two stages are brutal, though.

Hopefully, this score will improve with more time....

Heh, thanks. :)

I was honestly surprised at my first real run-through with the game (my first play was cut short due to time constraints, and I barely finished Stage 1). I had managed to get to 1R8ST using the Vic Viper using a similar gauge edit, then one-lifed to 1R8ST today with the Lord British. I'm still trying to find a ship and style that works best for me, but I plan to do a lot of experimenting before I really buckle down and work through the game.

I'm curious though (and maybe this is the wrong section for it)...I play the game on a PS2 and Event Horizon (Stage 7) goes at half-speed for most of the stage. Now, I was aware of the slowdown with the game running on a PS2 (and I don't have a working PSX at the moment), but I'm curious as to how hard the stage is going at full speed.

It's very hectic on a PSOne. Playing it on a PS2 really does make the stage much easier.

Mmm. May have to get my PSX working, then.

Ended up getting blown to bits when I selected the wrong path and accidentally chose Speed Up. Bleah.

I don't know why people say this stage is so difficult. I've never had a problem with it. I can die and recover in that stage as well.

I have more of a problem with the Moia Head boss.

It's not terribly difficult, but I always notice an increase in enemy aggressiveness there. Add that in with all the other stuff going on and it's relatively easy to get distracted and fly into a tumbling rock. :)

That said, try it on loop 3 sometime. I think 3R-7ST is the only time I've seen this game slow down (since I'm playing on a PS1). I'd love to see someone one life that without abusing Limit...

What's Limit?

I've never played through loop 2 yet (continuing). I think I'm up to 2-5 or 2-6 in level select. I want to try heaven's gate.

Limit is a 3-second shield that makes you totally invincible. It's really effective if you play your Shield in the first or second slot, since you can literally fly though entire levels without worrying about being killed.. I'm still partial to Force Field, though.

I haven't gotten farther than 2-2, though, but I'm getting to 1-9 on a regular basis with every ship but the Falchion Beta.

And somehow, I managed to improve my score a few thousand points despite not making it as far as my old score game:

Managed to get to 1LC the first loop, and ALMOST get to the final boss on the second. Ah well, I'm just happy with my performance. :)

Screwed up entering my initials, too. Bah.

IMO Heaven's gate is a hell lot easier than Big Core mkIII in arcade GIII. I don't understand why people keep saying its "the hardest Gradius boss ever".

It's intimidating, to say the least. But once you know what you're doing, Heaven's Gate is actually one of the simpler bosses. I almost kicked myself when I discovered the strategy. Haven't died fighting it since.

I just want to see it. Friggin GIII has some really mean bosses.

That damned evil level 3 boss with the bouncing lasers. I HATE IT!

I beat Heaven's Gate after about 20 minutes of practice. Salamander 2's final boss, on the other hand...
