I just got Raiden Project here and I have a question.
By default, it seems that checkpoints are disabled in both games (you die and you are immediately respawn).
Is that OK?

All other Raiden versions I played before were checkpoint-based.

I see why nobody put up a score for the SFC version now. Since they put faeries (worth nothing to pickup) in every stage, there's no bonus for lives (only end-of-stage bombs x medals), there are almost no bomb pickups, and there are plenty of 1-ups... so to improve my score I have 2 options:

option 1) no-bomb
option 2) suicide right before boss dies for automatic 4 bombs at stage clear

Oh yeah, also the game doesn't loop and the Stage 7 boss is worth like a million points for no reason. Anyway, Raiden Densetsu Super Famicom default settings:

TVR - 1,824,900 - ALL

MAME: lgb - 443.540 - 1-4

used assisted autofire (more of a nuisance with it sometimes, though)

played 1P side, stage 3 is fun

eh I dunno if this should really count because the "world" version doesn't seem to have checkpoints

Arcade
Ruldra - 798,760 - 1-5

I know using 2P side makes the game harder in other Raiden games, but does that happens here as well?

In Raiden I, playing with the blue ship results in lower rank. You'll also notice right away that fewer enemies are generated (at least in loop 1). Stay away from the red ship :!:

In DX, blue is the obvious choice due to its faster horizontal speed. Raiden II is kind of odd. While both ships move at the same speed, blue starts with better bombs. However, I think blue has to deal with checkpoints in the Japanese version. At least, that's how Babelfish seems to translate this:

単独プレイ時のミス後の処理は1P側の場合その場復活で、2P側の場合戻り復活になる。 [from the Japanese Raiden wiki]

Now that you mention it, the red ship indeed makes more enemies show up. Especially noticeable in that part where the stage 1 fairy is, no popcorn enemies appear with the blue ship.

Arcade
Ruldra - 1,152,060 - 1-6

No miss until stage 5. I still need to learn that stage.

The game does rank lower using the Blue (2player side) ship however, if you have a turbo fire switch or very fast tapping the fire button during stage 1 and 2 and you take destroying everything really quickly, the game lowers rank even further onto stage 3 onwards. Never try it on console though. ps, doesnt matter which ship you use Red or Blue.

The japanese magazine Arcadia stopped listing scores higher than 10mill. To be honest, it doesn't really make sense, all the higher loops are the same, they don't get any more difficult. Playing this game for score is pointless.
If you're good enough you can get 10mill after stage 3-4 already.

Actually, the difficulty keeps rising. Loop 4 is about as tough as Image Fight's second Penalty Area. Loop 5 is slightly harder (read: impossible).

Well, it takes about two hours to reach 10 mil. By contrast, you need a little over an hour in Raiden II. DX requires half an hour to one hour, depending on the course. Also, just surviving to 3-4 is a major accomplishment in itself. I'd say that's about as hard as 2-ALLing Strikers 99 or Sengoku Blade.

WTF is it certain japanese records not been recorded over 10million when some games like Raiden have multiple loops. Furthest ive reached was 3-6 (over 10million) back in 1996 so i was kinda expecting to see super highscores in japan. Sick of this 10million record stop in japan which has been going for years.

It's customary to stop playing the game at ten million points. When this rule applies to people playing in the arcade, arcade operators have to draw the line somewhere, to give other players a reasonable chance to play the game sometime in their lifetimes.

The specific ten million mark probably comes from a game like Gradius III, where reaching ten million points takes over seventeen hours for a single game, and I'm sure the same general limit applies to many games simply because it's just easier to govern that way.

I'm sure some crazy japanese guys got the counterstop at 99mill already. So shoot for that goal. :P

Even with slowdown and save states, you couldn't reach 30 million, much less counterstop the game. What with loop five's unavoidable bullets and all.

The run on the INH dvd shows part of loop 3. Unfortunately, it ends right after the player beats 3-4. There doesn't seem to be any footage of loop 3 on Youtube or nicovideo.
