Why do so few shmups utilize the charge shot?

Post by tehkao »

Outside the R-Type series there's few shmups I can think of that has the charge-shot. There's Sokyu and other R-Type clones, but I think that's about it...19XX has the "charge bomb" which is also pretty neat...

It's a shame IMHO...the charge shot is such a cool idea, I wonder why most other mainstream shmups have not copied this idea? IMHO it's much cooler to have a charge-shot weapon than a bomb. 8)

Yeah, it is a cool idea. Some games with charge shots:

1943 (NES)
Parsec47
Radio Zonde, Khyh only
Recca - Ok, it's a charge bomb and a shield. I think it's fair to call it a charge shot.

Super EDF, Power Strike, Super Aleste, Power Strike 2, Blazing Star, Dragon Breed, Dragon Saber and Eco Fighters feature at least one charge shot weapon.

Some of the ships in the raiden fighters series use charge shots.

I personally hate them.

play blazing star if you like charge shots, the scoring system is centered around it (that and gem collecting)

i never really considered the souky web as a charge shot o_O, but if you think about it, it sort of is, but not really.

and pretty much all psikyo games have charge shots.

the e-laser(correct name?) from the gradius series.

TF4 has the claw device wich does a charged beam if you dont shoot for a while, but only past stage 5.

TF5 has the coolest charge system ever :D

battle bakraid has one, it requires not to fire instead of holding button.

At least half the shooters on Neo Geo have a charge shot.

Detana Twinbee and Twinbee Yahho have charge shots. Yahho actually has four different types of charge shots. The Donpachis have a charge laser (well, at least the first two do). Gradius III and Gradius Galaxies have charge lasers, if I remember correctly. Iridion II has a charge shot too.

donpachi series dont really have a charge shot, they have a laser, but you just hold the button and it fires endlessly, nothing charges at all.

Gradius 3 and gradius V have a charge shot option in the weapon editor. I like to call them boss busters because they can kill many bosses in 1 shot (with the 4 options focused in one spot)

Ed, what in heavens name were you thinking? Absolutley nothing Double D.

Psikyo's Gunbirds and Sengoku Blade also have them. I hardly think charge shots are as rare as you make them out to be.

Ooops you're right Sokyu doesn't have a charge shot, I think I was thinking of another game....

Actually vertical shmups with charge shots are pretty rare huh? The only one I can think of offhand is Elemental Master (well it's more like a charge which activates your super magic attack)

Dimahoo, among other verts. Dimahoo stands out because what level charge shot you release is pretty much the focus of the whole scoring system.

Didn't you read the earlier posts? Detana Twinbee, Twinbee Yahho (with four charge options, three of them shots), and Iridion II are vertical. It's debateable whether or not that laser thing in Donpachi/Dodonpachi is a charge shot, but you can make it bigger with a bomb and it is a stronger shot that is seperate from the main shot. Someone also mentioned 1943 and some Psyiko games (and that includes some of their verts). There's also Dangun Feveron with the roll charge shot. I'm sure there are plenty of other verts with charge shots too.

Anyway, Would Ikaruga's homing lasers, Radiant silvergun's hypersword, Mar's matrix gravity reflector, and Gigawing's Reflect barrier count as charge shots? (Mabye charges?)

Mabye charges aren't as rare as we take it...

1943 had charge shots???

I don't remember that at all.....

Oh yeah, Biohazard Battle had charge shots too...

Ok maybe charge shots are not as rare as I thought they are. :P

But I still think most "popular" shmups don't have charge shots..you usually find them in the more "fringe" games.

1943 NES, but it might not have been in the arcade. 1943 Kai TG-16 doesn't have a charge shot. Umm, a good amount of horizontal and vertical shmups use charge shots and some games like the Donpachis have borderline charge shots. I don't know where you get this "fringe" games idea from. The Twinbees were very popular in Japan and R-Type is still considered a classic to this day.

Vasara had something akin to a charged shot I know (actually a charged Sword attack, but that's semantics).

Arrowflash had the option to stock or charge attacks too.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.
