Shmups in non shmup games

Post by Sigmund_Freud »

Arabian Magic you get a shooting level providing you use the woman... I would just like to add that I'v rinsed this game on 1 credit more times then I rinsed Gradius... Can anyone tell me any other non shmups that include shmups, and why ain't they called shoot em ups...

Ridge Racer Revolution for PS1 features the bonus level of Galaga which you can play while the game is loading. Ridge Racer is not called "shoot 'em up" because you race cars in it. Games in which you race cars are called "racing games". It does make sense when you think about it.

Edit: typo

I prefer to just call them shooters. But that term is being taken over by 3D action gamers, and so is "shoot-em-up". That's why we (some of us at least) call them shmups. There was some big discussion a while back on this topic...

I hear Jade Empire for Xbox has some crappy shooter minigame...

Super Mario Land for the GB has two such stages, Super Turrican II for the SNES has also two of them, Cave Story for the PC has one, too, and IIRC Arabian Nights for the Amiga has also at least one or two.

Oh, and I love your Avatar. It's so cute, I can't help but stare at it.

EDIT: And I hate the term "shmups", just typing it makes me feel bad.

Xexyz on the NES, has a few moments where it turns into a horizontal shmup. For the most part though, it's a platform game. A quality game all round, one of the best on the Nes, shame it's hardly known.

Blades of Steel (NES) has a quick Gradius-style boss battle during the intermission

Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES) has an entire level of Gradius in one of its stages.

I like to type shmups, but then I'm right-handed.

It's fun to say, too:

shmups, shmups, shmups, shmups

I often do it to the tune of that dun dun dun DUN DA DAAAA! *CHARGE* thingy they do at the baseball games I never watch, because baseball is the least interesting looking sport this side of golf and fishing. It manages to produce higher scores than soccer and hockey, almost by an order of magnitude, yet it's still dull!

Then there's that Gradius type minigame in Legend of the Mystical Ninja. The mini game abided by the rules that define a "shmup"; the rest of the game did not, even though Goeman was a one hit wonder, IIRC, and the game was well populated by 'popcorn' enemies. What made the Gradius minigame different from the rest of the game? That is what separates a shmup from other types of video game.

...of course, if you've never played Legend of the Mystical Ninja, I've pretty much wasted your time.

Why?

That's something I've never understood. Why do so many people hate the term "shmup"? Why is it so evil? I've used it since I was very young. It's always been there for me. I just don't get why people think it's a bad term???

Personally I think it's stupid sounding and just call them shooters though I really don't care if other people use it. I don't see a need to create another term for shooter because Doom and Dodonpachi are different anymore than I see a need to create a new word for role playing game because Morrowind and Final Fantasy are different... or platformer because Super Mario Bros. and Mario Sunshine are different.

Some of the metal slug games have scrolling shooter sections.

Keio Yuugekitai on the Saturn has 2 shooting stages. There's a 3rd that was cut from the game, that can be found in the bonus CD that comes w/ this book.

Gunstar Heroes, of course!

Solar Jetman on the NES' final stage is a very difficult shmup.

Shubibin Man 2 and 3!!!! (PCE) They're fantastic!

And for the sake of a joke: Toy Robo Force (GBA). It's got some shooting stages hidden inside of a text adventure.

It's pretty much like Acid King wrote, the term not only sounds stupid, it's also unnecessary. And unlike you I don't have a nostalgic attachment to it. I actually saw it on this forum for the first time.

Also it kinda seems like an admittance of defeat to me. "If we call them shooters everyone will think we're talking about Quake, so we need a different name for them." That's bullshit. "Our" shooters were here first. If I really feel the need to make a distinction, I simply call them 2D shooters.

Kirby Super Star's got a brief shmup (yes, I said it :P) section in its "Milky Way Wishes" game-within-a-game.

Couldn't agree more. I grew up with this genre being referred to as the shooter genre and I see no reason to change just because it has been stolen and that others have coined their own funny-sounding name.

Eh, it's a force of habit for me to type it now. I never say it outside of a keyboard though. I just say shooter, and if someone thinks "id SOFTWARE CATALOG," I'd tell them, "No, not first-person shooters..."

I definitely agree with that, but I think many people have adopted the word 'shmup' purely because it sounds affectionate or takes a split second less to type in.

I certainly wouldn't get in anybody's face over what they chose to call the genre. I think some folks around here are a tad cliquey and hive-minded. In 'real life' I always call them shooters, but it's not going to kill any of us to have to explain what we mean to an uninitiated gamer, is it? :P

People here treat this thing as if it's a conscious attempt by less enthusiastic gamers to disenfranchise shooter fans, when really it all comes down to a bit of harmless ignorance.

Rune Master II for the MSX had a hidden mini-shooting game.

Just type OMAKE at the title screen.

In Wario Ware Touched! that goth chick has a boss level which is a nice vertical shooter.

The smash 'em up Domo-kun's Angry Smash Fest has at least one hori shmup level.

The platformer game Myth (C64/Amiga) had at least one very cool hori shmup level in the end.
Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

JOJO for either Playstation1 or Dreamcast.
The most obscure/unknown/underrated Fighting game from CAPCOM.
It's a one on one Fighting game a la Street Fighter with mini games in it.
I forgot which version, but I'm leaning towards the PS version

Gradius type shmup in it.

All those are Amiga Games

Turrican 2 has a whole "world" made of shmup levels.

Arabian Nigths have 2 shmups levels on it.

Jim Power has one shmup level too.

Super Frog had a shmup level too. It was called "Project-F", a pun related to "Project-X", as both games were made by Team 17.

As is the last level of the Gameboy version of Kid Icarus (which is an entirely different game).

You beat me to the punch. I rather enjoyed that little Gradius romp during that game, along w/ playing the other titles. I think it's a fun diversion that more games should use.

Exactly.
It was even more impressive back in 1991, mainly because such freebies were very much unheard of due to cart space limitations and so forth. The other titles were quite entertaining as well.

I own the DC version, and afaik it doesn't have any such game in it...heck, I had no idea the PS version had anything like that.

The PS Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has it because it has an exclusive Super Story mode with a boatload of minigames that Sony pressured Capcom to take out of the DC version. So even though the DC version advertises the Super Story mode on the back of the case, it doesn't have it nor any of the minigames like the shooter that D mentioned (besides the one in the desert against the water stand user). As a tradeoff though, the DC version also includes Jojo's Venture whereas the PS version only has the sequel.

Superman the Arcade Game....but checking that game out is just not worth it, I tell you for your own good!

BattleToads comes to mind somewhat.

Megaman had a little Bird friend who you could merge with and shoot around with. Rush had a similar ability.

Guardian Legend is a BIG example although you might call it a puzzle-shmup.

Doomsday Zone of Sonic 3 & Knuckles was shmup-like.

Megaman Zero series had a few shmup-like mini-games.

Lest I forget, Bucky O' Hare and the Toad Wars Arcade game is both a shmup and a bemup, figure that one out!
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

2. Merciful Peacemaker
3. Suffer for Righteous Desire
