Wanted: Dead

Post by Redfox »

So this game was shown off at TGS just now. It's a fairly mediocre 3rd person shooter with 2015 graphics.

That said, it has an arcade in the game with at least one playable game and it's a cool freaking 16bit style shmup that would look awesome on a Mega Drive.

Here's footage of that game:

It's funny, this little mini game looks better than the entire rest of the product. I wish these people would release this separately heh!!!

Some of the explosions look like they were ripped off Thunderforce IV

It's not "3rd person shooter".
It's a game from authors of Devil's Third (hi there, Iconoclast!) and they basically do the same mistake... when they try to insert more "firegun shooting" rather than sword combat.

Which is a shame, because Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time was pretty damn good (though obviously never reaching heights of Ninja Gaiden).

Bumping this thread to mention that the shmup that's available on the in-game arcade will apparently be available for free on Steam (and I assume elsewhere) later this month, until Wanted: Dead is released:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2125 ... e_Runaway/

Pretty cool that people get to try it (and own it?) for free.
This is the type of game advertising I can stand behind.

Quoting the Steam page:

«Space Runaway, a compelling journey through meteorites, enemy vessels, lasers & humongous boss ships. This full-fledged arcade game will not only be an integral part of the Wanted: Dead experience, but it will be available as a free-to-play standalone until Wanted: Dead's launch.
The zombie squad you will get to play in Wanted: Dead hangs out in an arcade joint in between relentless katana slaying sprees. This is where you'll get to enjoy this 7-stage retro experience to bring the childhood nostalgia out and disconnect from this 80s cyberpunk world.

Key features:

7 challenging levels to test your arcade skills to the limit.
7 epic bosses that each require a unique approach
Nostalgic chiptunes to create an unforgettable atmosphere.»

To be clear, Soleil's involvement in Devil's Third was providing development assistance to Tomonubu Itagaki's Valhalla Studios - so it seems unlikely that Soleil would have been making decisions on overall direction of that game.

Soleil's more recent work was developing Valkyrie Elysium for Square Enix. I've played through all of that game, which is basically a 3D beat-em-up with very good battle mechanics. The story was poor to non-existent, and some of the design decisions were truly baffling... but the core action gameplay is very solid.

As for the shooter, Space Runaway:
- The announce trailer lists it as also "coming soon to PS5 and Xbox Series". Wanted: Dead is also releasing on PS4 and Xbox One, it's not entirely clear from the trailer whether the stand-alone Space Runaway will also hit those platforms. Also not 100% clear whether PS5/Xbox will get it for free like Steam (probably?)

- Screenshots kinda give me a little bit of an Mega Drive NCS/Masaya vibe; Gleylancer-ish overall design, with some mecha designs that call to mind the Assault Suits series. Also made me think of the aesthetics of some other Mega Drive shooters like Ex-Ranza and Gaiares.

- The name is surely designed to bring to mind the early 80s mecha anime Space Runaway Ideon (by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino).

Space Runaway's pretty good fun and it got me right in the feels (memories of Japanese import carts came flooding back  )

To be clear, you're absolutely incorrect.

Soleil is valhalla game studios, they renamed to soleil after a legal issue after another US company disputed the name. Itagaki was demoted (it's not his studio, and never has been) , then left after the disaster that was devils third.
He's now making some garbage NFT game.
