New freeware: Klorets

Post by Ixmucane2 »

Newly released: Klorets(クロレッツ) by nizakashii, on itch.io.

Citing the game's home page,
This is a bullet-hell shooter.
Hold down the X key to activate hyper.
Everything except you will slow down.
If you defeat an enemy during hyper, the enemy bullets will disappear.
Try to defeat 4 stage + the last boss.
The "bullet hell" seems, as far as I played, relatively easy (usually low density) but relentless, offering more intense action and less absurd tight spots than typical CAVE style.
The "hyper" is a slow-motion mode in which bullets and enemies are almost still and bullets from killed enemies become gold score items. Outside hyper mode, enemies drop green energy items that are spent to activate hyper.

No powerups, no bombs, abundant score-based extends that make scoring a priority for survival and completion.

Brilliantly, hyper mode can be used very freely (it's instantaneous and without gauge-filling activation thresholds) and in many ways:
  • briefly (against bosses, less briefly) to slow down bullets and dodge difficult attacks
  • as a virtual speed boost to dodge large bullet formations
  • to stand in front of large enemies and groups, kill them before they go away, clear their otherwise dangerous bullets, and score some gold (a very common pattern)
  • less than usual to fill the reserve to the limit of 500 green items, at which point enemies drop gold instead of further green blocks.
Irritating and ugly, but stylish and easy to see, low resolution graphics; bullet patterns and enemy waves clearly received more attention.

Irritating and ugly
Describes it succinctly. The slowed down music any time you use the game's Kakusei mechanic, the apparently unskippable and lengthy opening (??) and the really rapidly moving background are a bit much. The fact that you can use Kakusei at-will constantly without penalty for activating and deactivating it repeatedly also makes it very easy.

I agree with everything that's been already said, but that didn't stop me from really enjoying the game.

Still have to 1CC it, there are some spots which are pretty harsh if you're not ready.
