CAVE has acquired a license for Touhou
Yes, this is a real thing that has happened.
According to a document found on CAVE's website (under IR News, dated 2021年07月13日), CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou and will develop a game using the IP. Running it through machien translation, it appears the game will indeed be a shmup, and is set for release in 2022. No further information is given at the moment but more will be announced some time in the future.
Forum moderator edit: Changed CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou to CAVE has acquired a license for Touhou. Title implied that CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou in total.

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
I would be more excited about my two favourite shmup things coming together if it wasn't for the fact that it's most likely just going to be a mobile game.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

Yeah, expectations aren't too high at the moment.
Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
Finally another mobile gacha game noone of us is going to play. Or wants to play.
Nice one, CAVE.

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
But will it play better or worse than Touhou 18?
Just kidding. We all know the selling point is the hidden DDP emulator.

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
I wonder if it isn't so much as "we own the license to Touhou" as "we have the permission to use the Touhou license in our own development" because the former doesn't sound realistic. Maybe the machine translation isn't clear on this part.
Echoing others in that it is almost assuredly a gacha/gothic otome game. cave cucks lose, yet again...
Congrats to ZUN though, the guy has been making license money like a madman the last few years and must be rolling in it now.

I just took a quick look at the document, thanks for the link, and you are correct. 'received permission to use the IP' (IP 許諾を受け) seems more accurate to me.EmperorIng wrote:I wonder if it isn't so much as "we own the license to Touhou" as "we have the permission to use the Touhou license in our own development" because the former doesn't sound realistic. Fixed. Never understood the fascination with this series.Plasmo wrote:Finally another Touhou game noone of us is going to play. Or wants to play.

If Yagawa still works for Cave I'd be curious to see some lolis team edit with mass suiciding techniques.

I play em. No fascination other than enjoying really dense bullet patterns and the zen state they can provide at higher difficulties. Own em all, played them all to death.OmegaFlareX wrote:Fixed. Hope they milk those 2hufans to no end with some gachashit full of microtransactions, and then use that money to make real shmups.
Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
I think it is more likely they get the funds from icycalm to make Guwange 2.

I just found out the news elsewhere on the web, and found you guys already talking about it.
Too bad it might only be a mobile phone game.

SDOJ came out in the arcades 9 years ago. It will be a phone game; there is no "might".SAM wrote:Too bad it might only be a mobile phone game.

Wouldn't be half as bad if only they'd release it to mobile stores in the fucking west.
When you ruin some enemy, add to score points.

Pretty rich comment considering ZUN has been making real shmups for the last ten years while CAVE.... hasn'tKAI wrote:Hope they milk those 2hufans to no end with some gachashit full of microtransactions, and then use that money to make real shmups.
Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
Oh, Ebarrett! What cheers you up these days?
Maybe this license will be a way back to shooting games and out of the bullet cancelling point-of-no-return for CAVE. Never would I have imagined that Touhou would one day save CAVE. I remember, at the Swedish forum around 2006, a heated CAVE vs. ZUN debate between a cynical journalist and some doujin enthusiasts-- it made some ZUN fans so upset they even left the forum. If only the forum still existed and this Cave-Touhou game got realized, we could all rejoice and be friends again.

This post made me realize all bullet hell devs are doomed to one day create nothing but bullet eraser scoring.DMC wrote:Oh, Ebarrett! What cheers you up these days?

I wonder what it's gonna be like? Will Rina Sato or Ayaka Suwa reprise her role as Reimu?

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
I don't want it to be a mobile game. Please.
Might as well give up on the shmup part of the Touhou fanbase in terms of videos if it is a mobile game.
I need to remember, time will tell if we will get a development preview of the game...

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
Does anyone that's not a secondary care? ZUN hasn't made a great Touhou game in ages, Touhou is over, CAVE isn't going to change that. It's time to move on. The good games are still there and they're still underplayed considering their quality

Are you saying Unconnected Marketeers was a bad game?

I think this is the general impression most folks have. Given where CAVE is at these days, it would probably make the most strategic sense for them, unfortunately.Plasmo wrote:Finally another mobile gacha game noone of us is going to play. Or wants to play.

Re: CAVE has acquired the license to Touhou
I find it funny that it's easier to license the brand to make games than it is to let a localization company translate the text in a story-dense series.
