Yes you read that right. Platinum games, makers of Bayonetta, are now developing a sequel to Terra Cresta!

It is currently April Fools Day in Japan, so I've already seen a few of those hit. Hopefully this isn't a joke, but we'll see!

I do remember when they did this last year. So maybe an outside chance it is real? Unless they just recycled the exact same joke again which would be weird.

I heard that they copyrighted the name recently so it's probably legit.

It would be a pretty elaborate April's fools joke if they release these news and trailers every 1st April, and then on like the fifth one they finally release it and when you receive it you realize it's not Sol cresta at all, it's Bayonetta 3.

Except that it's owned by Konami, and Konami hasn't done anything new with any of their franchises in the last 10 years besides that atrocious new Contra game from a year or two ago.

Those aren't real things. They get played by about 200 Japanese salarymen per year then sit in a warehouse and rot for the rest of eternity.

Seems like a good platform for some beloved Konami classics.

It would appear that a mobile title in which the power-up bar is governed by gacha mechanics would be more to your liking.

Having to control multiple ships in shifting formations and still dodge bullets is a very intriguing gameplay mechanic...

People who haven't played Terra Cresta should give it a shot. IMO as far as shmups from that era (that aren't Gradius 1) it holds up better than most. Even arcade staples like Toaplan and Capcom were just releasing their first titles around that time.

I can imagine it having a big impact when it came out, but then Nichibitsu didn't go on to do great things like Capcom or Konami and faded into relative obscurity.

Neither, actually. They both deserve special places in hell.

This. Terra Cresta arcade is a really fun game and a little ahead of its time for how old it is. The NES port is a bit meh due to not having proper aspect ratio and room for dodging, but the arcade version is on Arcade Archives series now on PS4 and Switch.

I was playing Terra Cresta II on the PC Engine last weekend so it's good to see it's real. It's a fun series with a long history. Never had the opportunity to try the Saturn game. Anyone?

What's not good to see is another Japanese shmup ignoring Xbox again so I'll miss out this time. [Quiet Pang :P ] There's a lot of people moaning about it on the twitter and youtube posts so hopefully they'll listen and be more inclusive. Doubt it.

Granzella and City Connection [thumbs up]

Hamster, Platinum Games and M2 [big thumbs down]

Let's just say it's not great. It's not offensively bad or anything, just pretty boring and doesn't really feel like the original.

This is pretty typical, since it's the only console that doesn't originate from Japan and they're one of the slowest countries on the planet to get with the times on anything. They're as late to globalization of their products as they are to women's rights, in which they're ranked 2nd worst in the world, essentially.

Terra Cresta 3D is notable for the fact that it is a shooter with no score. You destroy the enemy not to gain points but simply because you know it is the right thing to do!

Like Terra Cresta 3D, it has three ships, but Sol Cresta does it better with multiple unique formations and modular power from the order of ships from front to back. You basically have 6 unique formations based on close docking and 6 shape-based formations. That makes at least 12 weapon powers available to the player.

Cresta is barely a coherent series. Also some games in the series are not called "Cresta", e.g. Dangar, which is very obviously a followup to Terra Cresta in a way that Terra Force really is not.

This game looks good though. They probably specifically tried to model it after Terra Cresta, because that's the right thing to do.

Honestly? It might actually happen at this point. That R-Type Final 2 interview dropped the shocking revelation that a Gradius VI really was planned and it wasn't just some empty announcement, but it was canceled after an extensive roundtable between Konami, Irem, and Taito. That same conversation eventually got us Dariusburst, and I guess that's also how the original R-Type Final 2 AFD happened.
