New Twin Tiger Shark - JAMMA Arcade - Kickstarter

Post by mice »

Just launched a Kickstarter for my, totally reworked, seven year old game.
Named it "Twin Tiger Shark - not the SAME!"...

Doing it on a self-designed JAMMA PCB. Yeah, stupid but really, really fun. :)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/83 ... t-the-same

Image Image Image Image

Totally shameless self-plugg'n. :)

Cheers!

Edit:
I reached the target the first day, huge thanks to all of the supporters!

Looks really nice (and I fondly remember the game back when it came out).
Do you plan on opening the platform for others, once you've done your run?
When you ruin some enemy, add to score points.

Yes, and I'm kind of hoping that someone makes the mame-drivers for it (probably won't happen), so I don't have to release the awful java-emulator that I've made. :)
But the plan is to have the platform openly available to anyone who wants it when I'm done.

Reading the kickstarter it’s not immediately clear to me what the 2 daughter pcbs are for? Looks like a great project!

I go through them in the video that is in the description (not in the main video). The prototype shown in the KS page has 3 daughter boards with ROMs. Two for the game itself, code/gfx/audio. And the third is for the configuration.
The image in the OP here is of the new prototype (revA1) I put together yesterday. And that has two boards, one for the game and one for the conf.

Thanks! :)
There are a lot of things the games have in common, but everything have been redone to support this HW.

I remember seeing videos of your game and it is quite an impressive tribute to the Toaplan shooting games.

I wonder if you plan to support 2P simultaneous play for the new JAMMA version?

No sorry, single player only.
For 2P simultaneous support, the DIP-switch would need to go or I would need to introduce some extra chips. And I don't want any of those at this time. :)

Huge thanks! If that happens I want tons of pics of it. :D

I take it you like Toaplan games? When the kickstarter title references 4 games ...

I liked the phone version of Twin Tiger Shark, so this looks promising as well.

I think I managed to cover all of their military setting ones, with this version. :)

Personally i’m anxious to see an exa arcadia port for added operator revenue

You'd pay $1500? lol
The ~$150 I'm asking for is mainly because of the HW costs. :)

Maybe exa should introduce some kind of budget-label with way cheaper games and drop the "add something exa specific" for those games.
Then again the lack of devs maybe isn't a problem for them.

I was going to make some kind of 3D effect with the daughter boards for it as well, but haven't managed to get something nice out it.
So the final one will probably end up looking exactly like that.

How do you increase the medal value in the game? :) I can't figure out what triggered it.

Nevermind, figured it out lol. This game is a ton of fun!

I thought the scoring was explained on the artwork? ALL items change into the star pickup, even bomb and power up.

Oh really? Thought it was only the shot type pickup. Thanks!

What does the thumps-up "1/2" drop do?

1 out of 2. Pick up two (1/2 + 2/2) on one stage to find out what it means. :)

That board is so cute. Congrats on the release - must be so exciting to see this getting into peoples' hands! Sorry I didn't back it at the time, but I'll have to at least try out your original version.

I have done that on at least the first two stages, and still have no idea what it means :P

On the first stage, check for a blinking invitation text on the left side of the screen right before the big plane that drops a power-up before the trucks emitting blue smoke. In the bush with a small grey house in it.

On the second stage, it's on the submarine on the right side of the screen.

Thanks! I'm just glad it arrived to you in a working shape. Been anxious about this whole shipping business. But I seem to have packed them properly which is a relief.

Yeah, the connection between the thumbs up and the dungeon entrances is quite weak. Need to rethink that. :)

Thanks. There are huge differences between the original and this, though. Like totally different games. :)

Arcade Belgium is at the FACTS convention, having the game in an astro. Even with the instruction strip in it.
Love pictures like these!
Emph sends me ones in his egret 2 every now and then as well. Really gets me going.

Edit:
Need to post a pic of the final kit content as well. Flyer is double sided, so there's just one in there but I had to show the back as well, hence two in the pic...

Not my kit unfortunately :( I didn't realize the PCB was only a limited supply.

The game really nails the feeling of Flying Shark especially, loving the hell out of it.

The issue right now is the chip shortage, which is a pain:

We'll see how many PCBs are left over after all of the KS ones have been shipped and received properly.

Definitely let me know if you get any more available!! :O
It'll be a long time before I get the chance to play this again, and I want to beat it :) Felt like I got pretty close.

Edit: Managed to get the 1-ALL right before leaving today. Game gets a little easy once you have a fully powered blue shot. Second loop does not mess around though :)
I think there are a lot of secrets I'm missing.

Interesting. Foregoing some of those P powerups obviously makes the game a lot more challenging, but it doesn't seem to give him as big of a scoring advantage as I'd have thought (and causes more frequent weapon changes which eats up some potential star pickups too). If you don't die, you should have your medals maxed out by the end of Stage 3 either way :D

I'm curious about not just emptying bombs into the stage bosses, does holding on to them give some sort of advantage? Since they are restocked on the next stage anyway (and after bonus stages). I noticed there are some targets that seem to give a score bonus from bombing them though, need to figure out exactly what those are. (EDIT: seems to all be "hidden" red orbs?)

Is it possible to do anything with the "?" pickup aside from getting a measly 5000 points? I'd guess the dominant scoring strategy is to keep your power one level below max so you can keep getting stars from the P pickups instead, but it kinda feels like the "?" has some purpose I haven't quite figured out?

Here's my super scrubby 1-ALL clear after about a day of trying out the game, apparently it was caught on stream, though the sound is muted and the colors are off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNb1qmq_m5M
I can't wait to try the game again in the future and try for a 2-ALL.

EDIT: LOL, the stage 3 boss is a lot easier approaching it like monouchi instead of what I was doing :D Gotta remember that.
Spoiler
EDIT2: Damn, there's a whole new stage with a TLB on the second loop? I love it <3

If you let the "?" collide with a red orb you get 100K + 5K.
