Absolutely loving my arcade stick, upgraded to sanwa and now ordered a seimitsu
Rediscovering old arcade games been a real buzz
And even more finding gems I've never heard before of let alone played
Would love to hear about your favourite arcade shooters

That list covers a lot. Some games I noticed are missing:
  • Shikigami no Shiro
  • Soukyugurentai/Terra Diver
  • Psyvariar
  • G-Stream G2020 (renamed to DeltaZeal on Steam)

It's not a bad list is it, especially with the mini reviews

That's great that you've added some new ones

Don't quite realise how many shmups there are until you get mame, amazing the memory banks getting a real workout
Phoenix, moon cresta, astro wars, gorf, Altair,

Let me answer your query with one of my own - what kind of shooters do you typically enjoy? That might help narrow down the field of suggestions a bit. There are so many in MAME right now, it can easily lead to choice paralysis.

I don't like the ones that make you go back to the start when u die like gradius 1&2 lol I'm not particularly great! I like sharp graphics if poss not blurry
Im not keen on bullet hell
Like a good soundtrack
Does that help?
Space or war themed no preference
Thnx

Ah, the old Xenocide list. I remember consulting that ca 2003, jebus.

It's MD rather than arcade, but have you played Elemental Master? It's one of the best-balanced intro STGs. Generous but relentless. Fantasy-themed, but its screen-razing weaponry puts entire swathes of military/scifi STGs to shame. lern 2 FIRE SWASTIKA Image manji, whatever. pls. Killer OST as per Tecno Soft's usual MO. Crusty ol' Mania clear.

For arcade, simply because it's not on the Xenocide list (odd, given all the adjacent Capcom works, and with Guwange and Smash TV taking care of subgenre concerns) - I'll suggest Gun.Smoke. It has checkpoints, but they don't do much harm, since powerups are merely "on/off" as opposed to levelling, and multiple pickups stack so even consecutive deaths might not scratch you. WRT game itself, just fire it up, you will understand why it makes scrubs lose their shit. Even if you never play it again, you will have learned what it means to have a horde of armed men lusting for your behind. Crusty ol' 1CC w/commentary

How'd I forget that one. Yeah, Hyper Duel is an even better recommendation than Elemental Master. It's also a better rec than any of the Thunder Forces! Bigger guns and less assholic stage design. It can get mean towards the end, since it has Rank (scaling difficulty) - st6 boss NIGHTMARE will teach noobs a hard lesson with his drifting trap flak and vicious targeted stabs. Still, you've got a lot of feelgood foot/floor blasting to do before then.

Saturn ver is even better, the arrange mode lets you lock the mech's aim for much easier crowd sweeping and hard target demolition. You can even config the [strafe] and [shot] commands to the same button, for Shock Troopers-style one button strafe.

If you like Raiden-style games, check out Sand Scorpion and Mad Shark. Neither are amazing games, but competent, and fun enough. I was going to mention Nostradamus, but it's already in the thread. Also, check out Ryu Jin.
