Steam sure does kick ass for shmups, doesn't it?

Post by RawlingGunnar »

Especially when they go on sale for next to nothing. Kick ass.

What are your top-5s?

For me, in no specific order, it's:

DDP DFK
JAMESTOWN
STRIKERS 1999
DRAGON BLAZE
ESCHATOS

Not at all, it's a menace to user rights, privacy, and competition.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Please don't make me actually lock this.

Anyone who wants to discuss shmups on Steam, do so. Anyone with a problem with Steam as a platform, the point's been made, move on.

Yep Steam rules. I love the extra layer of protection it provides and the assurance of regulatory compliance.

I can't believe that even after nine years, Steam is still the only place that carries the PC version of Jamestown.

I like Steam. They host cool shmups like Mushi.

Since there's mention of Jamestown here, has anyone picked up the plus version (Jamestown+)? It finally got a PC release at the end of last year.

Steam is great for shmups. Honestly, it ended up better than I thought it ever would--too many on my wishlist now (after already owning close to a hundred), too little money to buy, and even less time to actually play.

Top 5 I've put the most time into are Mushihimesama, Raiden V: Director's Cut, Deathsmiles, Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours, and Everyday Shooter.

Yeah, I have it. Its pretty cool, some of the new customize-able ships are really broken and silly. The extended gauntlet is crazy long, and the boss on the moon is probably the best boss in the game.

I love that these games are on Steam but it annoys me that almost all of the shmups from JPN devs have really lame configuration options. Want to play Raiden 3 or 4 in 1440p? too bad.

I know a lot of these ports are not priorities for the companies involved and probably aren't selling a ton but it's still frustrating.

I would really like to see Deathsmiles 2 on PC as well. I have it on my 360 and even though it's not as good as the first it's still pretty fun.

Satazius and Kamui are top-notch indie games. The former is an excellent Gradius (and other hori series) homage with a lot of very inventive level design. The latter is almost indistinguishable from its inspiration RayForce, in terms of aesthetic and pacing. Very hard but polished to a sheen.

I've only played a little bit of Steel Vampire and I don't understand its mechanics enough to comment on it.

I tried Kamui and Alltynex Second for the first time the other night. Blown away by how good they are, given their age. I still need to put time into Satazius, but it doesn't like my stick and I am too lazy to get a third party mapper.

Kamui, Alltynex Second, and Reflex are all definitely solid.

I haven't played the others though. I have heard good things about the two Astro Port titles on your list (Satazuis and Wolflame) and I keep thinking about picking up the Astro Saga bundle on Steam, but there is something about the trailers that just don't make them look that good...

I wasn't as huge a fan of ZeroRanger as other people, I didn't think it properly got going until the second loop, but that new arrange mode they added was so much fun! It's what was missing, it's shot straight up my list now.

There's been a run of great shmups on steam recently, Super XYX, Zenodeath, Crisis Wing. Then we've got the Ginga Force port coming on the 24th and Astral Gunners is going into early access on the 2nd October!

DFK
ESCHATOS
Kamui
Zeroranger
Hellsinker

as for ones other people have mentioned, all of the alltynex trilogy are p good from what ive heard. ether vapor is also p nice, the main deal with that one is the really dynamic camera. theres vertical sections, horizontal sections, rail sections. its flipping them all p often and looks like a lot of fun in a mildly disorienting way lol.

I can vouch for Mushi, Eschatos, and Kamui as A+ shmups.

None of them are very expensive either.

Speaking of shmups on Steam, I was checking the current Indie Live Expo II sale, and I found a shmup called VRITRA COMPLETE EDITION that I was previously unaware of, and it's a lot of fun.
I'm not easily impressed, but this one came out of nowhere for me, and was a very welcome surprise.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/8928 ... E_EDITION/

The game has apparently been on Steam since 2018 (with barely any reviews, or exposure), and I can't believe I did not notice it before.
This is the first sale the game has, and from what I played it's well worth the price tag.

If anyone does buy the game, go for the game + OST pack, you will happy you did so (it's one heck of a soundtrack).
Here's a few sample tracks:
https://soundcloud.com/neotroinc/sets/vritra-ost

Gameplay wise, it has some similarities to Dariusburst CS, a personal favourite, so it seems I found a new game to play in the near future. :)
