I'm ordering a flip grip for my Switch to play portably in tate, and would like a joycon with a proper dpad to go with it. Unfortunately the Hori lacks a battery & needs to be directly attached to the system itself, so that's a no-go.
There's a mountain of 3rd party joycons out there, but any reviews I've seen tend to lack meaningful info about the dpads. It occurred to me this was the probably the best place to ask - anyone have experience with a reliable joycon with a dpad which could be used unattached to the system in a flip grip?
Joycon w/D-Pad to use with Flip Grip?

I'm not aware of any 3rd party solutions that would work with the flip grip but I just started looking. Honestly the perfect solution would be one of Hori's products with just wireless capabilities and thats the problem most of the third party controllers don't have any wireless capability. That or if there was a flip grip that could still connect to the controller ports. The other problem is many are just poor quality.
Closest I've found is the nexilux but not sure if its compatible - https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/ ... ndo_switch

There are a bunch of cheap wireless 3rd party joycons with dpads on Amazon & Ali Baba that would be compatible, mostly from manufacturers I've never heard of. Reviews I've seen say some of them are decent, but don't really put the dpads to the test. Mostly just comment that they all seem to be crosspads laid on 4 buttons underneath. That's neither here nor there for me, the Pro Controller does that, and the one I bought in May has been great, they seem to have fixed the problems they were having with it. But that doesn't speak to the usability of random 3rd party stuff.Shogun wrote:I'm not aware of any 3rd party solutions that would work with the flip grip but I just started looking. Re: Joycon w/D-Pad to use with Flip Grip?
I've got a pair of Flip Grips and just resort to using Nintendo's 1st-party Joy-Con. Works like a charm for those Switch STG titles that support tate mode. The only minor quibble with it is, upon inserting the Flip Grip into the Switch's LCD screen setup, the volume goes way up. Have dial down the volume afterwards -- no big deal.
I like how you can use a credit card, debit card or gift card to have the Flip Grip propped up on a flat surface. How cool is that?

I use this one (discontinued): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087QJ39GH
The d-pad feels similar to Gameboy Advance SP.
'upgraded' version, currently available:

I'm going to give these a try... Flip grip has been gathering dust since I got my split pad pros.oxtsu wrote:I use this one (discontinued): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087QJ39GH

Assuming the dpad is good, how are these overall?

Re: Joycon w/D-Pad to use with Flip Grip?
That looks alright (at least the left joycon, tbh the Gamecube controller is personally one of my least favourite ever). But what I notice with the standard layout is that the dpad/cross buttons sit a little low. Ideally, something where the dpad was in the analog's position would fit best with the Flip Grip, at least for me.oxtsu wrote:I use this one (discontinued): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B087QJ39GH

I couldn't find a better a better one w/battery.. anyway I saw your link to this thread in another, and just thought I'd share what i was using. You may want to try it out, return if not your cup of tea.
The d-pad does sit low compared to hori for example, it protrudes past the surface about 0.5-1mm. I don't have a problem with it though.
The d-pad is 'clicky' btw. Cheers
