Longest shmup with an endpoint on each console?

Post by pegboy »

What's the longest shmup that has a definitive endpoint for each console and also overall? This includes games that loop assuming there is an actual endpoint.

The longest I can think of is Axelay. If you start on easy you need to loop it 4 times to reach the end, which takes about 40 x 4 = 160 minutes.

On the NES, 1943 takes about 80 minutes to clear.

There are also several pc shmups like Raptor that can take a really long time but those have save points so I'm not sure I'd count them.

Any others that are super long?

Yeah, Raptor is also episodic, so it's probably intended to be played in bits and pieces. Same with other PC shooters like Stargunner and Tyrian. They all take a few hours.

Raiden V: Director's Cut is a solid 70 minutes or so. A little bit longer than the original due to the added bonus stages.

Sturmwind on the DC is around ~90 minutes.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Space Megaforce (aka Super Aleste) is also lengthy, somewhere in the 90 minute neighborhood.

The Japanese version of Zero Wing on the Mega Drive has 35 different endings, one for each loop, if you want to count that. That would take, lets see here.. about 26 hours until you get to see the last one. :P

Dogyuun has a bug where the gameplay completely breaks after the 4th loop - just at the beginning of the 5th loop. Getting there takes about 150 minutes.

It's more like 65 minutes - still quite lengthy for a single loop.
