Shmups with unique artstyles

Post by trikibasey2 »

Hi I bought Blue Revolver and Zero Ranger on sale and have been loving these games even though I can’t complete ’em, but I am wondering if there are any shmups with the same aesthetics as those 2 or just any cool games with colorful art to grow my collection with :)usps tracking showbox speed test

Basically any Cave shmup (especially the later ones, like Deathsmiles, Akai Katana, Mushihimesama Futari, Muchi Muchi Pork!). It doesn't get more colourful than that.

When it comes to unique art-styles, it's hard to top Milestone and their funky cel-shaded games!

Aside from Milestone, I suggest taking a look at Neko Navy and its very cute style :

Some Kenta Cho games like rRootage or Parsec47 also feature a cool simplistic wireframe aesthetic :

I always thought Border Down was pretty unique looking. Apart from the odd ship design, you don't see too many shooters with lens flare and magic hour lighting

Also, the whole Jeff Minter/Llamasoft slate with it's "80s arcade on mushrooms" thing. Tempest 2000/4000, Space Giraffe, Polybus, and the newly released Moose Life. There's really no confusing his stuff with someone else's

This reminds me. Many years ago I was browsing this forum and someone posted these screenshots from a shmup they were working on developing, but which they had decided to stop work on. I thought the art looked very cool and saved the screenshots.

A couple freeware shmups come to mind. Check out Vastynex and Tumiki Fighters.

Hellsinker. Perhaps not unique artstyle by itself, but certainly unique direction.

Platypus.

A shoot em up' game, but everything is made out of clay if that's what you mean by UNIQUE artstyle.
Honorable mention to any cave styled shmups.
