They share the same (new) powerup system, where the powerups stay instead of going away after a while.
A few years back I was playing with a buddy who thought the game should have a second loop, so we did some testing (credit feeding lol). The Japan New Version (my pcb) did not have a second loop, while a different one (did not say "new version" on the title screen but used the new rules, so I think it was the usa/world version) had a second loop.
