Xbox One backwards compatibility question.

Post by kid aphex »

I’ve been out of the game for a while, so forgive me if this is common knowledge...

The last time I checked, the Xbox One was backwards compatible with a growing list of 360 games.
How many of those, if any, are it’s Japanese STG library?
Is there a list?
Are there any caveats?

Do I still need to have a Japanese 360 to enjoy the STG library?

Thanks in advance,
Ray

The compatibility is good quality, yet limited selection.
Most Xbox One compatible games were released in the west at some point. If a game was Japanese only, don't count on it (I dunno why the non-localized 360 versions of Clannad and Steins Gate were added).

Poking through the support list, 360 Japanese STG games that'll play include:
Bullet Soul
Galaga Legions
Guwange
Ikaruga
KOF Sky Stage
R-Type Dimensions
Radiant Silvergun
Raiden IV
Sine Mora
Triggerheart Exelica

The list is ok but a bit diasappointing that it only contains games from Live Arcade and none of the disc games, especially the Cave games. Looking at the list i see that Strania and Omega Five are also included for backwards compatibility.

Raiden IV is a disc game.
Bullet Soul was region free in Japan. The English digital version is much more affordable though.

Sine Mora later got an Xbox One retail release.

It wasn't a hard and fast rule but MS' priority with backwards compatibility was games available digitally and games released worldwide, which precluded a lot of STG. (The Bullet Soul publisher was shrewd in that they specifically released the overseas Games on Demand version as a way to get their game on XB1 via BC.)

MS is done with the XB1 BC program, so there's no hope for anything else.

That's not entirely correct.

They stopped the 360 BC program to concentrate on making Xbox One titles backwards compatible with the new system, They could go back to emulation of older titles when the new system is available.
