Ketsui does not save scores

Post by shmupsrocks »

My Ketsui doesn't save scores after switching it off. Is that normal and if so do all standalone Cave PCBs seem to behave that way?

Yes that's normal for all of the Cave PGM games.

austere made a hack that will let the PCB save to the NVRAM.

You'll need a 27C160 EPROM and an EPROM burner to get it up and running.

You need the original suction cup from the kit to save scores.

if you don't have the original bubble wrap and cardboard box the game won't even run

The overwhelming majority of arcade games as well as early NES/SNES/Genesis arcade-style games do not have a battery-backup for saving scores. It's only after the year 2000 or so that you really started to see arcade games where scores were saved even when the game was powered down, such as with CAVE's later releases where you'll see a "daily" scoreboard (one that resets when the game is powered down) along with a "all time" scoreboard, where the highest scores ever are saved even between game resets.

Some versions of MAME support score saving, but the way they do this is with similar tricks that do not operate the game authentically to how the actual arcade boards work. Basically, if you get a good score you're proud of, get in the habit of taking a picture or writing it down, don't expect the game to hold onto it for you.
