Neptunia Shooter (Steam)

Post by NeoStrayCat »

So...for the Neptunia fans out there, there's going to be an STG of Neptune and her friends, and yes, this is real, it seems. Even the usual places have an article on it.

Sil: https://www.siliconera.com/2019/04/08/a ... this-year/
Gematsu: https://gematsu.com/2019/04/neptunia-sh ... ced-for-pc
NG: https://nichegamer.com/2019/04/08/neptu ... ed-for-pc/

And to make it more real, you can try it out if you can make it to the closed beta from IFI -> https://www.ideafintl.com/beta.php

I am surprised as you are guys. (Even I'm barely starting on the series on PC lately.)

Actually, I'm surprised this didn't happen way sooner...

Just looks like some goofy minigame sort of thing though.

The game is out and you can get it here :
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1037 ... a_Shooter/

I gave it a quick go and it seems pretty competent. You start each run with only Nepnep and her forward shot but the bosses you fight are other characters from the series, and they join you after being defeated. You can then switch between the characters on-the-fly and each has a specific shot type (backward shot, dropping missiles on the floor, etc.) It's as if you had multiple Gradius weapons at your disposal but you can only fire one of them at once, and the level design mixes enemies and waves that require all of those shot types. Speaking of Gradius, it seems to be an influence, as some enemy formations are similar and there's even a part reminscient of the volcano eruptions. That's not the only other influence, as I've seen green homing lasers that I've already dodged in Rayforce.

The visuals are mostly blocky low-res pixel stuff that works well. And it still allows the characters to make super goofy faces when you get hit. The music is cute. As this is a small game, there is a repeated background and the same few tracks are reused, but it's fine I think.

Controls-wise, the options have 4 buttons : Shot, two character switch buttons, and one that fast-forwards replays. My only real complaint about the controls is how AFAIK, you can't use one button per character/shot type. No, you have to cycle through them until you get the one you want, which is pretty fast thankfully but is still distracting. This is made worse as the number of characters in your team increases after each boss fight. Switching from the front to the back shot in one stage will require one button press, but two in the next one for example. I wish they could change that or add an alternative control scheme. "Change weapon" buttons in shmups are not my cup of tea at all.

Neptunia Shooter starts in windowed mode and you can enlarge the game window without losing the aspect ratio, but I haven't found a fullscreen option.

I'll have to play it more to know how it fares in the long run though. Because the game doesn't have a specific scoring system (or at least I haven't found one), it just awards you for survival and I don't know if the game loops or anything. There are online leaderboards and all scores there have replays, so you can see that the top scores with 2bil are just hacked lmao. In any case, I can recommend it.

EDIT : Oh, and I have Win7 and the game runs despite the store page saying that 8 is the minimum.

Will there be a DRM-free version?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I don't see that happening, so no.

A friend was telling me this game was a lot better than he expected for a throwaway gag so I looked it up...

...was stunned to see it was developed by LukPlus.

For those who don't recognise the developer name, LukPlus did Coropata on DS, but also a shooter called Sagittarius-A-Star:

Might give this a whirl.
