Recommend me Steam shumps

Post by wasilewski »

I have some money to spend on Steam and would like to buy a new shmup and don't know what to buy.

Currently I have:

Blue Revolver
Crimzon Clover World Ignition
Dariusburst Chronicle Saviours
Deathsmiles
DoDonPachi Resurrection
Mushihimesama
Raiden IV
Trouble Witches Origin.

Anything is appreciated!

I can recommend Counterattack, as it has been launched recently and has a great deal of customization in modules and weapons. Plays strongly like Gradius, and with endless upgrading to do.

You should absolutely be buying ZeroRanger. Greatest shmup in decades. Other good ones:

Psyvariar Delta
Judgement Silversword
ESCHATOS
Strania
Monolith
Ikaruga
Devil Engine
Raiden V
Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo

It's perfectly OK to not like the game, but your statement is factually incorrect.

Psyvariar Delta is a no-brainer. Three great versions of an excellent idea. One of the few games that makes boss milking fun and exciting.

Game Tengoku is also secretly excellent. It's more fun with the DLC characters though, so factor that in to whether or not you want to spend the extra cash.

Says on Steam the Minimum specs for Psyvariar Delta are 8GB RAM and a dedicated graphics card. That seems a bit high, has anyone tried running it on a system with 4GB RAM and built in graphics? I can run Ikaruga fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, loads for me to check out!

I didn't realise there are so many good shmups on Steam, especially from indie developers.

I'll throw my hat in for Strania. It has a bit of an unfair rep as a 'disappointment' because as g rev's first pure shooter for US consoles (and not a weird fighter hybrid like Senko no Ronde) everyone hoped/wanted it to be amazing. It isn't. And I say this as a g rev fan. However, it is really, really good.

And hey, if you're up for a weird shooter/fighter hybrid, there's Senko no Ronde 2...

A lot of love for Strania - I have it in my basket now, but still investigating the other games, especially Jamestown.

No one mentioned Wolflame yet so I'm vouching for that. It's basically Astro Port's take on the Raiden formula.

And seconding Judgement Silversword, this one is amazing.

Seconding ZeroRanger. That game is amazing. Infinos Gaiden is a top pick if you like 90s style horizontal scrollers, really enjoyed that one. Super Hydorah is good too, if you want a more traditional game. I also enjoyed Shikhondo Soul Eater, worth it for the art direction alone.

Thanks again everyone.

I'm got ZeroRanger and Infinos Gaiden.

I haven't played Infinos yet, but I love ZeroRanger, especially the colour scheme. The amount of options is great too.

It’s a bit non-traditional which kept me away for a while, but Bullet Heaven 2 is a really good time. Kind of wish it saved scores by difficulty lebel - but the game is quite long so maybe there wouldn’t be many people who really care to take advantage of that.

IIRC there’s a free version with less content on the dev’s site.

This.
Also they ported Armed Seven to DC recently, would be neat if they did Satazius next.

Odd that no one has mentioned Caladrius Blaze yet

I'm very fond of it's gothic spin on the standard intergalactic militaristic shooter graphical design.
That said, I'm not very fond of the softcore porn aspects of the game and wish there was an option to turn them off (seriously). But it's got a nice difficulty ramp, tons of different weapons, and interesting bosses. And who knows? Perhaps you won't find the softcore porn aspects as gross as I do. You may even like them, it's been known to happen.

A few I recommend:

- Gundemonium / Gundeadligne (Hitogata Happa is a bit of an acquired taste, but comes from the same devs)
- ESCHATOS / Judgment Silversword (typically bundled together)
- Jamestown
- Astro Tripper (this one is fairly obscure)

I dont know about other versions of the game, but in the PC version you can switch off the sidebars and the damaged characters under game options -> illust. Cant remember if there is anything else of note that might bother you.

edit: i just checked, you still get the result screens at the end with those pictures for no lives lost

Zero Ranger definitely deserves all the praise it gets, especially for the price. Despite the retro aesthetic, it's one of the most carefully crafted shooters I have played in a while.

Once it *clicked* with me, I put a boatload of time into Raiden V: Director's Cut, so I'm going to recommend that. It seems to go on sale multiple times a year for about 12 bucks. Worth it.

Vasara Collection is a good bundle, coming in at about $10. I've enjoyed it.

I'll suggest the various "ZEAL" games as well (Delta Zeal, XII Zeal, Trizeal, etc).

The Bullet Soul games are pretty fun too.

Really, there are a ton of decent/recommendable shmups on Steam. I'd suggest searching for the term "shmup" in the steam store, scrolling through what's there and just adding a bunch to your wishlist. There's a lot more there than I think some people realize.
