Best shmups on Steam?

Post by glide »

I'm looking for shmups on Steam, what are your favorites? (For PC only, not console ports)

Crimzon Clover: World Ignition is really well done, and goes on sale for $1 regularly. I'd also recommend BLUE REVOLVER.

DARIUSBURST: Chronicle Saviours is expensive but it has a lot of content. It also has versions on consoles though so not sure if that falls within your criteria.

Infinos Gaiden is very good. By far my favourite recent shmup.

Shikhondo Soul Eater is decent, too. The visuals are also pretty unique.

Traditionnal shmups I have played and would recommend:
- Crimzon Clover
- Revolver360 RE:ACTOR
- Blue Revolver
- Monolith
- Ikaruga
- Cave games: Deathsmiles, Mushi, DDP DFK
- Kamui
- Astebreed

Haven't ever played but I think can be recommended anyway:
- Super Hydorah
- Strania
- Eschatos
- Trouble Witches Origin
- Danmaku Unlimited 1 / 2
- Raiden III / IV
- Infinos Gaiden
- Dariusburst ?
- PAWARUMI ?
- Gundemonium ?
- Zenodyne R* ?
* IIRC, the dev is a member here
Please note Strania and Raiden III / IV are resolution-locked (although they are full-3D games).

Not exactly shmups, but may be of interest nonetheless:
- Senko no Ronde 2, Acceleration of SUGIRI 1 / 2 (versus)
- Downwell (shmup + platforming)
- Bot Vice (cover shooter)
- Assault Android Cactus (twin-stick shooter)
- Savant - Ascent (some sort of rail shooter with light platforming)
- Kero Blaster (run'n gun)

Here's some stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet, in no particular order. Bolded are ones I have played and think are good; I haven't played the others much (or at all) but since I remember them they're probably more notable than the average game you get by searching the "Shoot 'Em Up" or "Bullet Hell" tags on Steam, so go check them out yourself and see if they interest you. Not sure if by "for PC only" you mean don't list games only available on console (which is already implied by "on Steam", but whatever), or games that have no console port, or games that at least started on PC, so I listed stuff that also has console ports separately. Not listing PC games that aren't on Steam because you did ask for Steam...

PC exclusives on Steam:

QP Shooting - Dangerous!!
Xmas Shooting - Scramble!!
Terra Feminarum
Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo
Kamui (already mentioned is in a series with the two below)
RefleX
Alltynex Second
東方天空璋 ~ Hidden Star in Four Seasons (Touhou 16)
秘封ナイトメアダイアリー ~ Violet Detector (Touhou 16.5)
東方幕華祭 TouHou Makuka Sai ~ Fantastic Danmaku Festival
Suguri
Sora
Graze Counter
Maidens of a Hollow Dream
AngerForce: Reloaded

Also on consoles:

Hitogata Happa
GundeadliGne
Gundemonium Recollection (already mentioned but is in a series with the two above)
Diadra Empty
Jamestown
Danmaku Unlimited 3 (Keade already mentioned 1 and 2)
Raiden V (Keade already mentioned III and IV)
Judgement Silversword

NTSC-J: You know STGs are in trouble when you have threads on how to introduce them to a wider audience and get more people playing followed by threads on how to get its hardcore fan base to play them, too.

It doesn't get the attention that many of the Japanese developed games got, but I've been pretty impressed by Jamestown. Worth trying if you've gone through CC and Dariusburst.

I also spent more time with Wish Project than most people did. It's not outstanding but it's a fairly solid Touhou inspired game.

^this. I absolutely love Jamestown, I find it really enjoyable, especially for newbies who can tackle single stages instead of going through the entire thing.

Satazius is a VERY good Gradius clone.

I (obviously) enjoy Castle Shikigami, but mostly for the insane plot. 2 is a much better game.

They may be a little simplistic but I really enjoy Space Moth DX and 1917. I'm not sure if they're available on console but, to me at least, they both feel like old school PC shmupping.
