Is Cave dead now?
I haven't kept up with shooters in many years and had an itch to play again. What's the latest CAVE game? or is there even one being developed?

Re: Is Cave dead now?
The last Cave arcade game was SDOJ in 2012. They're focusing on mobile games now (and seem to be doing fairly well?), but they've partnered with other companies to put out some ports of their back catalog on modern platforms (Mushi, DFK, and Deathsmiles on Steam, and Dangun Feveron and Ketsui on PS4)

Re: Is Cave dead now?
Ha, this might be one of the most popular thread titles on the forum.
The only thing that I know Cave is working on right now is a mobile strategy game called 3jus. I doubt they'll even talk about a shooter before that's done. (if at all!).
Some former Cave staff formed their own company and made Aka to Blue, which was a very well-done mobile-game shooter that is currently being revamped for arcades and the Switch, IIRC.

Company is alive, spirit is dead.
Re: Is Cave dead now?
CAVE is dead. Long live CAVE.
Their recent mobile games are both fairly popular and well-designed, by all accounts. Unfortunately, they seem unwilling to update their older mobile games for newer phones.

Keep an eye out for EXA news. I imagine the answer will be "no" if you're talking about shooters.

When will they make another racing game?

At this rate, I won’t be interested into shmups anymore. I am no longer going to be active in this forum from now on. I am more interested into Kemono Friends, rhythm games, D4DJ, Puzzle Games, Hololive, and Pretty Cure.
Farewell.

Re: Is Cave dead now?
Mobile games are incredibly popular in Japan, from what I've read the apple products more so... which I find kinda ironic given the fact most of the android phones are from Japanese companies!
Heck, I'm doing iOS dev now. I wouldn't say the spirit is dead, I've actually come to the conclusion myself that developing for specific devices is actually a lot more fun than developing for PC... different experience. I can't quite bring myself to do arcadey titles on PC because there's no appeal to it. Phone though? Well there you've got a chance to push a buttload of sprites, screen orientation, shiz like that... on PC its just a program running in a window. No magic to it.

Maybe it's more fun to develop games for phones, but for playing them the reasons you've listed aren't relevant. I just don't really see any reason to play phone shmups since they sacrifice audio/visual quality and provide poor controls. I suppose with a good controller it has some value in being a portable way to play shmups, but beyond that it's just seems inferior to playing on PC/console/PCB.n0rtygames wrote:I can't quite bring myself to do arcadey titles on PC because there's no appeal to it. Degica recently said that they haven't cut ties with CAVE and that there may still be more releases in the future, but who knows when or if that will even happen given how long it's been since DFK on steam.mastermx wrote:Even degica stopped porting their stuff.

Re: Is Cave dead now?
I thought degica was just publishing the games an it was Cave themselves who did the port. I assumed their PC ports just didn't do well enough to justify the expense.mastermx wrote:Even degica stopped porting their stuff.
Re: Is Cave dead now?
Yeah Degica was only publishing them. But I meant that I haven't seen any more published cave games.
I purchased all the cave steam ports on release, though they were laden with bugs. Would be cool if they released saidaioujou on steam, but I highly doubt it would ever come to that.

Re: Is Cave dead now?
Couldn't they just sell like 1000 cardboard boxes to fund a new release?
Re: Is Cave dead now?
STG Cardboard = Manic Profits.
Nintendo realized only recently so their Labo margins aren't as galactic as those of cave boxes dealers, but one day Labo will go collector too, and then...

If you run the game full screen and rotate your monitor, it'll feel like you're playing on a massive phone.n0rtygames wrote:I can't quite bring myself to do arcadey titles on PC because there's no appeal to it. I dunno, in the peak shmup days he was selling faux fizzy piss to pedos and now he's standing next to healthy females of breeding age and some dude in a gas mask selling mobile shit to normies for profit, the only way is up.

Honestly, if you don't like the games... don't play them. Pretty impossible for me to argue with you on thatSquare_Air wrote:Maybe it's more fun to develop games for phones, but for playing them the reasons you've listed aren't relevant. That being said I shall retract my comments about not wanting to design for PC. I'm actually focusing on the PC build now thinking up what I can do to make a touch game fun - given the control medium.
Buuuut I will say that mobile games are pretty chill. Dunno why they get so much hate. For all the talk about embracing the arcade spirit, sometimes think people seem to have forgotten that one of the most appealing things about arcades is... human contact Phone games tend to attract normal people (mostly) who wear cute skirts, eat health foods and shit like that. Not, as has been mentioned in this thread, people who buy faux fizzy piss.
I apologise profusely for this shitpost.

I like mobile play, because it is fun while in transit. For the real deal you have the PCB's or PC/Consoles.
