First Tate Game
Re: First Tate Game
It's funny that I stumbled on this thread because my first TATE game was Blue Revolver and I just did it yesterday. I installed the game on my MacBook Air, fiddled with the video settings, then realized the true potential for this laptop.
Now, I'm searching for a solid monitor that can rotate on the fly because I can never switch back.

Re: First Tate Game
I'm pretty sure it was Strikers 1945 Part II. I know I was psyched playing home ports with the proper arcade orientation. It made the play field seem so big and full (duh) compared to yoko options. I could hardly believe they'd program a game like that and expect a home audience to flip their TVs, it was radical!
I have particularly fond memories of the Dreamcast era with Gunbird 2, Ikaruga, Trigger Heart Exelica, Under Defeat, Trizeal, and Radirgy.

Funny enough, it was about 5 years ago when I was downloading iOS apps for my good ol' iPhone 4s.
I remember thinking "Wow, this Bug Princess and Espgaluda looks pretty good on a vertically oriented screen, but my thumb gets in the way!".
Years later, I have like 330 sorted tate games on PC with the glorious over-thick scanlines from a trinitron CRT monitor.
Today, I play Monolith: After the End super casually, "popping a quarter in", so to speak, trying to put a dent into its replay-ability!
Man, I love my perma-tate'd setup. (minus climbing under the desk to go from HDMI time to VGA time)

For me it was Shienryu for the Saturn. It holds a special place in my heart for that. Not sure when. I'd say somewhere in 1999/2000. I then discoverd how to tate a tv succesfully without distorted colors. (turn off tv for about 5 minutes, then rotate, turn on)

Re: First Tate Game
Ikaruga on DC from day 1 (2002).
But I didn't fully comprehend the power of Tate until I played Layer Section, Donpachi, and Strikers 1945 on my rotated 19" Sony Wega through S-video.
“And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.”

Re: First Tate Game
I suppose that must have been a CRT computer screen which I tated to play Ikaruga (DC) through VGA.

Re: First Tate Game
Gunbird on saturn. Got the game free for being a good customer.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Re: First Tate Game
Man that was a long time ago but I'm pretty sure it was Raiden Project (Raiden 1 & 2) on the PS1. I had a Commodore 1084 (14") monitor (was easy to tate & looked awesome with RGB) and a 70" Panasonic CRT (and yes I tated that one also ) at the time. I always loved it when somebody came in my room, saw the rotated TV and shook their head in disbelief .

Re: First Tate Game
That has got to be a typo. You had a 70 inch, from corner to corner, BOOB TUBE!?LordHypnos wrote:Damn, that must've been a workout! I didn't even know they made CRTs that bigdingsbums wrote:70" Panasonic CRT (and yes I tated that one also
I've seen these giant Mitsubishi (EDIT: MEGA VIEW PRO 42" AM-4201R with an absurd amount of relevant input jacks on the back) sets that are in the 40 inch+ range, but its like double that???
This is supposedly 300 lbs.
The standard pallet below really shows HOW BIG we are talking here. This is just 42".
Re: First Tate Game
Your first pic is too big! ^^
Mitsubishi supposedly produced a few 61" that didn't work well and were discontinued quickly.
Guess he meant 70 cm yeah.

No joke, google image search says there is the 2500x2000 version above, and this 200x100 silly thumbnail, and nothing in between. I really don't want to download, resize, host somewhere else, blah blah blah..Xyga wrote:Your first pic is too big! ^^
So like 70 cm = 50-ish inches.Xyga wrote:

Maybe he meant rear-projection CRT ?
There was a pic of a tated one somewhere...

Re: First Tate Game
That giant Mitsubishi is a beast! That's like the ultimate set for local 4+ player gaming. If I had one, I'd design my game room around it (you'd have to).
The pic with that girl is amazing, haha.

Re: First Tate Game
Shikigami no Shiro II on DC if I remember right, but the answer could easily be "any tate-able DC STG". I bought one of those nice small Toshiba flat CRTs with component inputs that were being deeply discounted at Sears to do it, was awesome at the time

Pac-Man on Namco Museum Vol. 1 on PlayStation. I thought I was stepping into dangerous territory, what with the way the game itself warns you not to.
I wouldn't tate again until I got Gunbird 2 for the Dreamcast.
