The hardware can do 320x240, so no it's not ;D

That's a pretty moot point if nothing actually uses it.

(If a true low res tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a poorly sampled sound effect?)

Fascinating 411 on the arcade hardware that Aka to Blue Type R runs on. Good to learn that it can be played in 320 x 240 mode.

I must say it's impressive they have a requirement for both 480p and 720p for this hardware. When done properly that means mixing a 4:3 and widescreen aspectratio for the same game on the same hardware. That seems like a gigantic headache to support properly especially or things like shmups with bulletpatterns etc. I remember in the early days of the xbox360 i've had quite a few games with issues when using a 4:3 aspect on the vga cable. Also capcom vs tatsunoku comes to mind where there were some gameplay differences on wii vs arcade because of this.

So vertical games can switch between different aspect ratios as well as resolutions? That screen shot is 16:9.
It probably has graphical padding top and bottom so the 4:3 image sits in the middle of the screen, like the Nesica version of Crimson Clover.. I think you can see a little at the top of the photo..

Nah, Arcades here still have stacks of CRT cabs, and it will take a good while for arcades to phase them out, but I can imagine 31khz 640x480 being the lowest res for a while, unless cave pump out another low res game.

I think most HD cabs will be usually designated for new releases, after that, it will be relegated to a CRT as demand goes down

That said, all the new hardware seems to require 720p minimum, but that can be downscaled to 640x480 quite comfortably.

On this new-fangled exA-Arcadia arcade hardware platform, what video output interface will be used? Will it output in VGA, DVI-A, or HDMI format?

I do recall some of examu's earlier arcade pcbs running in 640 x 480 mode with VGA output indeed.

For those with VGA input on their cabs, I take it a DVI to VGA adapter will be enough?

Will it be compatible with the Capcom I/O for existing tri-sync JAMMA cabs?

A simple adapter will work.

For JAMMA JVS IO boards, we are compatible with every major one (Capcom, namco, Sega, Taito).

If a shmupper can give us the the inside scoop of how Aka to Blue Type R plays and some cool video footage of it up & running, that'd be gravy.

And is Aka to Blue Type R a solitary playing experience or is it a two-player affair as well?

They don't want any footage of it anywhere until the show. There's a law in Japan where arcade games have to have 2P support.
