Complete List of Console TATE games

Post by DoomsDave »

I haven't found one place that has an up to date list with every game that supports TATE so I thought it would be good to start one here. I'm not just looking for shmups, just any game that supports TATE. If you know any that I've left out or if I have any wrong please let me know so I can update the list.

Same game, different names. Layer Section is JP, Galactic Attack is elsewhere. Further, "Rayforce" is merely the title of the JP arcade original, and does not appear anywhere in the Saturn port, IIRC. Yes, the arcade game also had two names - the international release is called "GunLock". Confused yet?

I think Monolith supports tate mode.

There's also a brick breaker game on the PSP called Beta Bloc which requires you rotate the system to play it. I'm sure there's a console pinball title or two out there that does so, too...

The only 16-bit game to support tate...
Nichibutsu Arcade Classics 2 Heiankyo Alien ~ SFC

And 8-bit...
Suho Jeonsa ~ Master System sorta supports tate, unofficially.

There are a number of Lynx and Wonderswan games too, but I don't remember offhand.

Here are the other Wonderswan games I know of:
Crazy Climber
Gunpey EX
Rainbow Islands Putty’s Party
Soroban Gu
Tane wo Maku Tori
Tetris

these WS games have some levels played in tate and others in yoko
Klonoa Moonlight Museum (both tate & yoko)
Rockman & Forte (both tate & yoko)
Magical Drop (? tate or yoko ~ not sure about this one)

On Lynx, there might just be one tate oriented game:
Gauntlet The Third Encounter

On PS1:
Irem Arcade Classics has tate for Zippy Race.
I'm not sure about the Saturn release of this game, probably has tate too.

oh yeah!,, and the whole Vectrex library.

Klax and Raiden are also vertically oriented, though the former is yoko in the arcade.

Ive had a search around and I’m struggling to find the info.

I have an RGB-PI I use for MAME. Was thinking of getting a second one just for MAME Tate games. Does anyone know of a list of MAME Tate games so I can try it out before buying more kit?

Thanks.

Use the advanced search on the left (you can set it to english)

I suggest to set - at least - the following filters, or you'll get way too many results;

working status: working and imperfect
game type: only parents
orientation: vertical

Also 'up to version' might be useful depending on which 0.*** version of MAME you're using.

Panel de Pon (a.k.a. Tetris Attack) for Game Boy Advance (where it's bundled with Dr. Mario) does TATE. I'd be much surprised if no other PS2 game than shmups did.

I can't be the only one not liking how Steam is apparently regarded a console now, whereas many more PC games than Steam titles display tate. Such as all of the Shikigami no Shiro series (officially ported, not emulated). Even OutRun 2006 does (quite pointlessly, but all it takes are graphics card drivers that can run widows in tate and there you have it)*. Obviously, making a complete list of PC software usable in tate this way would be nigh on impossible.
Assault on Namco Museum for PSX is tate as well.

*) Seeing the PC OutRun 2006 engine flexible like that, one has to wonder just how wide - or tall - screen it gets on a computer hooked up two or three monitors, using the just right kind of drivers.

I remember the some patterns being different from the arcade near the end, for some reason. Weird, since I thought it looked like pure emulation. And yeah, it was poorly scaled.

I believe display orientation is baked into whatever ACA games is using to emulate. I can confirm for Aero Fighters 2.

edit: Also Gunbird for the Switch has orientation options.

Gameboy Advance has a surprisingly meaty list of TATE:

Namco Museum 50th Anniversary has 4 TATE (1 shmup):

-PacMan
-Ms.PacMan
-DigDug
-Galaga

Atari Anniversary Advance has 3 of them (2 shmups):

-Centipede (emulation)
-Tempest
-Super Breakout

DSI Centipede, Breakout, Warlords has 2:

-Centipede (recreation)
-Breakout (2600 version)

Was this option removed from the western release? Can't seem to find it.

My bad, it's called "Puzzle League", not "Tetris Attack" on this cart I've got. Select Puzzle League (first screen after "select language"), press start as title screen says, then select "Vertical Mode".

You can rotate the screen on all of them, none are actually supposed to be TATE afaik though.

I don't think anyone regards Steam as a console. I only included it because when I was researching this I found a Steam list and thought why not add it. I don't really care about keeping that part of the list up to date anyway since I just wanted to focus on consoles. If you wanted to have a shot at doing a full PC list then be my guest.

Hmm, odd, I still can't find it in puzzle league... and no language selection either.... maybe a faulty rom. :?

On the PSP, you have TATE in the 2 Capcom Collections:

Remixed:
Hissatsu Buraiken, Rush & Crash, Ares no Tsubasa, Last Duel, 1941 Counter Attack, Varth (can't remember now if Block Block and Quiz & Dragons have /need it)

Reloaded:
1942, 1943, 1943Kai, Senjou no Okami, Senjou no Okami II, Vulgus, Exed Exes, Gun.Smoke

Great thread, can't believe there's a SFC game!

These ps1 games also apply to Saturn:
Capcom Generation 1 (1942, 1943 & 1943 Kai)
Capcom Generation 3 (Vulgus & Exed Exes)
Capcom Generation 4 (Gun.Smoke)

Sonic Wings is mentioned twice in the ps2 section:
Oretachi Gesen Zoku: Sonic Wings
Sonic Wings

Namco Museums Vols.1-5 and Encore (Galaga, Galaxian, Gaplus, Xevious, Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber, Assault)
should be:
Namco Museums Vols.1-5 and Encore (Galaga, Galaxian, Gaplus, Xevious, Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber, Assault, Assault Plus)

Also, few tips.
1) perhaps put the game name first
Oretachi Gesen Zoku: Sonic Wings
Should be:
Sonic Wings (Oretachi Gesen Zoku: Sonic Wings)

Capcom Generation 1 (1942, 1943 & 1943 Kai)
should be:
1942 (Capcom Generation 1)
1943 (Capcom Generation 1)
1943 Kai (Capcom Generation 1)

2) lose the empty line between games

3) put everything in Excel and use the sort function to sort it alphabetically, also the systems

4) Check out this list http://www.gamepilgrimage.com/content/g ... definition (btw, these guys have several other lists you might find interesting
