Music that Battle Garegga was based off

Post by ratikal »

Manabu Namiki has continually gone on record to say that majority of the Battle Garegga soundtrack were based off Detroit Techno songs, as well as other sources.
http://squareenixmusic.com/features/interviews/manabunamiki.shtml wrote:Manabu Namiki: ...I held a great admiration for techno music, and I had a good deal of respect for the Detroit techno artists in particular: Derrick May, Underground Resistance, and Carl Craig. The main programmer of Battle Garegga was also a fan of their music. Inspired by their music, I almost felt that I had something of a mission to take that energy and breathe life into the game's music...

...The sound of Battle Garegga was influenced by my friends at Raizing, by Detroit techno, by Summer Carnival '92 Recca, by FM and ADPCM (YM2151 and MSM6295), and by the game music of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Shinji Hosoe, all of these people and things I respect.
http://www.vgmonline.net/manabunamiki/ wrote:His soundtrack for Battle Garegga — a highly regarded dieselpunk shooter — was very well-received and provided him with his popular breakthrough. Building on his approaches from Zed Blade, Namiki wanted to breathe the life of Detroit techno throughout the score. While he found FM synthesis had become limiting to work with, he carefully studied other techno-flavoured scores — Nobuyuki Shioda’s Recca, Shinji Hosoe’s F/A, and Hitoshi Sakimoto’s Terpsichore scores — to enhance the final product.
http://indiegames.com/2012/01/blip_tokyo_nullsleep_namiki.html wrote:MN: I don't spend a lot of time analyzing my own musical influences, but I have paid attention to certain genres of music from around the world. When I was writing music for Battle Garegga and NMK games, that's when I was developing a personal style of music.

I'm really fond of techno music. YMO was especially influential. Electropop, bands like Propaganda and Devo, spoke to me. Maybe the biggest impact on me has been from Detroit techno, such as Underground Resistance. I was influenced by that aggressive sounding music, by R and S Records, Rising High Records, Dave Angel and C.J. Bolland. Those were my research materials for several of the shooting games.
I wanted to complie a list of all inspirations. Remember, these songs have to be from before 1996.

Thrust and Thrash
*It's got the same beat. I also just like how this song matches with the Junky Monkey (stage 6 boss) battle. The drums come in right on queue in the first phase, and the mechanical sounds almost sound like the arms itself.

So does anyone know where the missing songs are?

Blood Brothers in the Dawn (Ending)- Underground Resistance “Sometimes I Feel Like”

There's another blog post where the bassline in Meagalomanic (Stage 6) is similar to Rhythim Is Rhythim - Nude Photo, but I gotta do some more research on that.

This influence is really clear so I would mark it to the list too.

I dunno about Nude Photo, but this sort of sounds like Stage 6 as well? https://youtu.be/V7WvhnjeOSg?&t=960

Wow, had no idea the ED music was taken off that Nation2Nation track.
Not Garegga, but on the topic of UR, I'm pretty sure this is what influenced the intro part of "AD 2008, Tokyo", the Stage 1 music from Daifukkatsu.

Also, Degeneracy sounds exactly like all that Mad Mike (UR founder) stuff on Happy Records. Might want to dig deeper into these.

sounds pretty likely. That track is a rehash of the Stage 1 track from DOJ, and Namiki is obviously ridiculously "influenced" by Underground Resistance :)

Thanks for making this thread, hoping it manages to cover more tracks along the way.

Which is already a reinterpretation of Donpachi stage 1 music, and yet sounds completetly differently.

Wish I knew a bit more Detroit techno to help you personally ratikal, but you know, you might want to post this same thread (with links to the original soundtrack) in the group "Track IDs" on discogs. The community there might be able to help you ID the original tracks that the tunes from Garegga was based on or possibly inspired by. :)

What the hell is that link, that's not how it's supposed to sound lol. I'm kind of curious where that even came from. Here's the whole album as it should sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU4gDRQgzhE

Chop U is the second track on that album, Can't Wake Up.

Fantastic thread. I'd been aware of Detroit techno but never indulged. Now I see myself delving into this a lot further. Great work everybody.

I love this thread!

Here's some quick and dirty pics of the excerpts from Namiki interview featured in the Garegga special edition book. Sorry for the shit quality (let me know if anyone wants a larger image). I haven't read this bit too closely but I'll try to have a look and put up a quick summary...

Landcruising is an absolute classic! Also, I was just listening to Dan Curtin's "The Silicon Dawn", neat record. These Japanese game music producers were really tuned into some cutting edge stuff back in the early 90s.

Honestly, I think the music in Battle Garegga is hands down the best music in ANY shmup.

Fantastic reading about this. They managed to get Hiroshi Watanabe to remix a track for the 2016 release, so they managed to get a guy who's now making Detroit Techno and releasing on Derrick May's label, so that had to be quite the honor.

Oh dang, I never put it together that the remixer for the soundtrack on the rev.2016 release was Hiroshi Watanabe, as in KAITO on the Kompakt label (and others). I should give that remix another listen! (Coincidentally, I named my son Kaito.)

Just the other night, I was listening to the radio broadcast labelled "A Short History of Techno". I'm no scholar enough to judge if deservedly so, but its "Detroit" section reminded of this thread. Podcast available here, some of you might find it on-topic. Just be having patience, it's long, late-night stuff.

Hiroshi was very excited to be included in the project! Though he also admitted he'd never once in his life ever played the actual game and vowed to do so with the port. Hiroshi is quite a laid back guy.
