Gradius 1 for PS4

Post by Marc »

Anyone picked this up, and know if it displays and controls OK? At £7.99, they've priced this well beyond impulse purchase price for a game I've been playing for 30 years.

It's ported by Hamster, they include all three versions (Gradius, Nemesis US/UK) and have lots of options
for control remapping, video (including fake scanlines), etc. No input lag. Pretty good port if you ask me,
and easier to play on your big TV rather than hauling out the PCB.

Better change that title fast, you could give some people here a heart attack thinking it's about a new Gradius on PS4. You misspelled "Gradius" too.

I don't think anyone really expects much from Konami these days so I doubt anyone really thinks it's a new one.

I've been playing the Arcade Archives version of Gradius over the past few days and I've been impressed too. I was surprised because of that youtube video showing a lot of input lag.

Can any of you guys translate this better than google? This site seems to talk a little about the lag: http://matome.naver.jp/odai/2142261727751559301

Whoever is accusing this port of having lag is just misinformed. It actually has less lag than the actual PCB.

I actually played this port back-to-back against the PS1 version on the same monitor (PS1-> XRGB-3 B1 mode -> monitor) and it felt very similar. That's great to hear confirmation from you alamone. Did you test it yourself against the pcb?

It was Mihara who (I believe) first posted a video that demonstrated some lag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kar0yRFAo8c

I don't know if he just overlooked some other cause of lag in his TV setup, but I had assumed at the time that he wouldn't have made that sort of mistake.

Who is this Mihara person?
Vice president of Arika, and an opinionated active figure in the JP arcade scene. He led a tragically unsuccessful attempt at getting Ketsui ported to PS2.

Wow, I took that video seriously when it first appeared. :/

We love the games, Mihara-san! Even if you'd possibly gas-chamber us for enjoying while gaijin! ;-;

Oops - title edited.

Who am I kidding, it'll be nice to have the game on my main system so no doubt I'll end up buying this later. So what else is up on PSN JP?

On the J-PSN they have a bunch more arcade games:
  • Ninja Kid 2
    Ikki
    Cosmo Police Galivan
    MagMax
    A-JAX
    Butasan
    Crazy Climber 2
    Gradius
    Syusse Oozumou
    Mr. Goemon
    Scramble
    Raiders 5
    Double Dragon
    Terra Cresta
    Exerion
    Karate Champ
    City Connection
    Nova 2001
    Solomon's Key
    Moon Cresta
    Renegade
    Wonder Boy
    Bomb Jack
    Exciting Hour
    Rygar
    Crazy Climber
    Ninja Kid
It looks like they've only released a few of these in the US and even fewer in Europe. The only other one I've tried out is Rygar and it seems to be a pretty good port too.

They're all craptacular ports by Hamster, the same shovelware company that released Haunted Castle and several other old arcade games as MAME-on-a-disc for PS2.

well the video CStarFlare links pretty much hints at this being a badly done job. That's just showing the attract sequence which is going slower than the Arcade version. But it's enough to put someone off from getting it since there's a chance that it runs slower than arcade elsewhere too.

It is sad that some old man's ranting would prevent someone from buying this fine port.
