Cagar wrote:Hmm, after reading the title I was kind of hyped but..
why don't you (the OP, ACSeraph) just roll at the beginning of the week, and have the result game as "game of the week" that everyone will play for that week?
Then it would be literally like "eternal STGT", just with completely random game choice for each play-week.
Right now the system is kind of awkward, because you'll have to play every single day of the week to stay in the competition, and games have different amount of stages anyways.. (with huge variation in difficulty! it's a roulette though so :> )
so why not just roll a random game and have a weekly scoreboard for it here?
So, while I do think this is a good idea, an STGT-like environment isn't really what my goal was with this thread. I wanted to create an ongoing, somewhat casual, easy to drop in and out of permanent event that gives everyone an excuse to play random stuff we usually don't play in a somewhat high stakes environment. I think that if we really attempted an endless weekly STGT that focuses on a single game per week people would burn out very quickly, especially considering the high potential for pretty shit games to get pulled in a given week. People have their own games they want to focus on after all, and an endless STGT would prevent people from doing that.

With Death Roulette the idea is just to make a few minutes to do a small amount of arcade environment style shmupping each day. The competetive aspect is really just for fun, since the random factor will have a huge impact on who wins in a given week. That's why I don't care if you draw something that loops infinitely. Lucky you, I doubt you can loop it forever anyhow, and if you can then whatever you deserve to win imo.

The argument could be made that even so everyone should play the same game each day with a single credit, but that would exclude people without access to every game, and honestly drawing something random and seeing what other people are getting is half the fun here.

tl;dr I simply like having an excuse to play a random game with no restarts each day, and I'd like to share the experience with others via a non-serious competition

That being said,

If you were to create and organize an STGT weekly I would be in full support and would participate. I simply would like to keep that separate from Death Roulette.

---

Just rolled and played my own game, Eco Fighters, only to realize after the credit that it had not been set on defaults, therefor I have to disqualify my run :| Not real big on the theme and presentation, but the game itself seems quite good to me.

Just for those wondering about the "normal" STGTs, I'm planning on hosting TRP-STGT in spring, and Dex was going to host regular STGT in fall I think (maybe he said summer, don't remember).

I agree. This format here is pretty fun so far but I for one wouldn't want to participate if it was a never ending STGT. I have heard horror stories about the kind of rubbish STGT pull out and to play that sorta seriously for a week is just no. And I like how this is basically a do or die setup where no resets are allowed!

Just my 2 cents.

Zaarock - RayCrisis (PSX, US) - WR-02R - 4 Boss - 2,402,770

Played Special mode on this a bit some years ago. Seems like a fun game, I think I prefer it over Raystorm.

After countless rerolls to get something I actually have (I really should just write up my own list to randomize), I get...

Shepardus - Fairy Wars - Easy (Route A2) - ALL (3 stages) - 14104700

Died a lot more than I expected for Easy difficulty, but the game also spits out extends like crazy. Should I have picked Normal difficulty for this?

I manage to find a game for the challenge, the lucky/unlucky is Battle Bakraid - Unlimited (America)

S_Fang - Battle Bakraid Unlimited (MAME) - Normal Mode - Blade Owl (I love that ship <3 ) - Stage 1 - 774440
Image

I really don't like the almost-invisible bullets in "Battle" series, as well the "middle finger" move of dropping the wrecking plane on you in 2nd stage.

cave hermit - Twinbee Da! (original game boy emulated in Higan) - Stage 2 - 153900

A game boy port of the arcade original, which I honestly found underwhelming to begin with.

Pretas - X-Multiply (Japan) - 3-Boss - 937800

Incredible game, probably Irem's best STG and with one of my all-time favorite Stage 1 themes. Lost all my lives to the third boss from misjudging the hitboxes on its bouncing lasers too many times - I even had it down to its last turtle head once. Also failed to kill the snake midboss in time, even with the red laser weapon.

ACSeraph - Donpachi (PS1) - Type-C - Stage 3 - 2,712,860

I felt like this was a really bad run, I usually at least make it to stage 4. Everything that hit me was stupid shit I really ought to have dodged. Maybe I'm tired? One day I'll sit down and actually practice this game; I like it.

Yes, I probly didn't make it clear enough in the OP so I'll be revising it a bit for next week. All games must be played on normal or above. Since you didn't know about it, you can replay this roll on normal and submit whatever you get.
shmuppyLove wrote:Oh great, a memorizer

Sorry if it wasn't clear, you are only allowed one roll per day. Your first all ( 8) ) of Valhellio counts, But TFIII only counts if it was played after midnight your time. Was it? Air Gallet (luckily?) won't count. Also how many stages are in Valhellio?

Awesome news, I'll be looking forward to them. Hopefully this year I can focus a bit more seriously...

Announcement to all participants:

This will be a short week since the thread launched on Thursday. It is scheduled to End today at 10:00PM United States EST. I know I said Sunday, but I lied. I work on Mondays so it's too difficult to compile the scores and setup the leaderboards and I Want to be able to do it on Sunday afternoon instead. Sorry for the sudden change.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the test week. Based on how this week has gone there will be a few minor changes to make your lives easier and help things run a bit more smoothly starting next week. I'll update everyone in detail about it tomorrow along with the first leaderboard update.

Keep kickin' ass guys, you are awesome 8)

I rolled again and I got Mushihimesama, so...

This run sucked a lot, as I usually finish stage 1 in No Miss. Then again, I do not practice this game much because is the Arcade version.

Started on Strite and ended on Strite. Sorry, should have made that more clear. If I had made the second stage it would have been "Strite, Daser" because I chose Daser as second.

I did a Normal run shortly after the Easy run and got to the third stage, but not an all clear.

Shepardus - Fairy Wars - Normal (Route A2) - 3 - 8882390

One of my favorite Touhou games, probably going to keep working on getting a Normal 1cc since I'm also trying to clear the extra stage.
