I liked all G-Darius music a lot when I first hear it, way better than new age-ish Gaiden.

For example is Invivo, plays during the "fourth" stage, love the semi-vocal choir samples also fits perfectly to the stages which really imaginative IMO.

Replaying Final Mission (FC) at the moment, enjoying the deep kick of those basslines and drum samples. I was thinking "sure is Contra-esque" and sure enough, composer Kyohei Sada is a 1980s Konami vet just like his Natsume contemporary Iku Mizutani. High-calibre chaps... KoNatsume, baby! The whole OST's great, with fat, almost jazzy leads shaded by a plaintive tone and driven by cybernetic bass hammer. As with Natsume in general, it's worth a play for any fan of Konami's FC music (or games). A few tracks that stood out this session:

"The Last Hope" (Intro) - an elegiac beauty, strikingly contrasted with fiery apocalyptic imagery. Both elements absent from the NES version whose name I don't deign to say here*. Just too much, chaps. (・`ω´・)

Image

New York City Ruins (stage 1) saxy sorrow, violent backbeat, beefy explosions. Manful shooting BGM.

Boss theme - short and scintillating in the spirit of Gradius II & III boss BGMs, evocative of a desperate battle. That drum kit is getting battered. :o

The Astrotube (stage 4) - this one's composition grew on me. Rocketing tension with Steve Harris Bass Gallop™ straight into a calculatedly brutal halt, presaging the shift from feisty riffing to a bleak, spacey solo.

*awful name and missing intro aside, S.C.A.T. does make some interesting changes to the audio mix. Ultimately I prefer the fatter FC drums to the crisper NES ones, but both are worth a listen for sure.

While listening the boss music an image of SFC Gradius III BigCore Mk II and III fight pops in my head, really fitting. :'o

Check out this new arrangement of MSX Nemesis 3 with Gradius II and (mostly) Rebirth soundfonts.

How do you guys feel about orchestral music in shmups? A couple games have done this. Off the top of my head, Ikaruga, Reflex, and (what actually made me think about bumping this thread) Giga Wing 2 did it. It does seem to offer a more dramatic feel than the usual stuff, even though I'm a huge fan of more standard arcade music, as well as electronic music and stuff. I think it especially enhances Reflex, just given how cinematic that game already is.

Example Ark from Giga Wing 2

The soundtrack is one of the best aspects of Radiant Silvergun. Possibly Hitoshi Sakimoto's most iconic score.

I think anything can work, provided it meshes with the game's tone. I wouldn't want RSG's "Evasion" in Dangun Feveron or Raiden Fighters, not because it's orchestral-sounding, but because it's evocative of the game's desperate final stand - as opposed to Dangun's wacky space disco caper, or RF's superhumanly cold-blooded surgical strike.

It's not just about premise or aesthetic either - game design is a factor too. Some say RF's soundtrack clashes, but I know when I'm out slaughtering my enemies at speed in vicious yet systemic, undeniably technical ways, the BPM is going nuts! Point being RF's QUICKSHOT QUICKSHOT QUICKSHOT DESTROYED AT A TIME high-speed stunting has an innate character - frantic yet controlled, with an insistently pounding beat to suit. It's not the optimal context for the nuance of RSG's orchestrals, or even Raiden II's stoic yet subtly plaintive melodic rock. Nor Lords of Thunder's galloping power metal, or R-Type Delta's bouts of crawling ambient horror.

This is Soundtracks 101, I know. But I think the variety of tone and pace seen across different STGs bears emphasising. Despite the genre's almost universally no-brakes ethos, there are STGs that can support filmic moods and soundtracks just like there are others built for relentless techno/metal barraging.

Sakimoto's Soukyugurentai OST is broadly similar to RSG's, though it's noticeably colder and more expressly electronic - little of the burning passion redolent of a doomed but ferociously hard-fought battle to survive. I like to think it reflects the game's mercenary theme - it's a deadly-intense scenario, for sure, but it's what the characters signed up for, and they're being well-compensated for their efforts!

^Of course you're right  It's all about how the music fits with the atmosphere, and orchestral stuff does fit very well with that sort of dramatic, serious, and often cinematic atmosphere.
Here's another good one from Reflex this time: An Unavoidable Choice
Actually, listening to this, I'm realizing that the reflex music actually has a driving drum beat behind it along with the orchestral stuff. This seems to add a lot of energy, but it's still very dramatic. You can feel how much is at stake here.

Giga Wing 2 boss theme 1 such a sense of danger!

Good call on Soukyugurentai. I always forget about that game. You've also done an excellent job of describing it.

Totally forgot to mention - RefleX's choice of "Angel Dust" during that orbital re-entry sequence was so harrowing, between it and the burning red aura, I was certain my ship was gonna explode if I took too long! Even knowing you're not on a timer, it gives the scene an incredible gravity. As you said, Siter Skain are excellent at raising the dramatic stakes like this... even not really knowing what's going on in their rather intense storylines, it's impossible not to feel their presence. My favourite is possibly Kamui's "Inherited Memory," alternating between funereal and furious with such conviction, you know you're not just witnessing a run-of-the-mill Evil Computer End Boss - there's some dark history here! That's the ideal of course, action and soundtrack playing off one another.

^Very true. Goes to show that having a "cinematic" experience doesn't actually require any understanding of the plot, which is an interesting point.

While the name may recall Dick Stock, Flak Attack's COUNTER BLOW is a Konami gem I rarely see mentioned. Has an intriguing bit of a Zuntata's reedy sound, but the melody and tone are 110% ARMY AF, as per late-80s Konami. Arf arf! Let's PWN some MIGs! Image

I had to go fire up this killer piece after. Technically not from an STG, but it's another Konami obscurity involving screaming fighter jets, so stfu!  Sounding for all the world like a lost Hard Corps track. Arranged by the wonderful McQueen8601, who also has one helluva Rising Blue Lightning - listen to that soldiering bass! scintillating! - and going further afield, for the AKI lovers, Revenge's electrifying Starrcade BGM!

Man, I hear all the SFX over that last one. *BAP* *CRACK* "OAAARGH!" *dingdingding*

---

E.D.F.'s ARMED SATELLITE needs more love. Some of the hardest upper-orbit bass slapping this side of SDI and Galaxy Force II.

Beautiful piano rendition by its composer, Tsukasa Tawada.

EDF's got some nice tunes in general. After st1+2's hinting at breezier tone than the typical STG, Stage 3 comes outta nowhere with some of the most maturely mellow broodings this side of Zuntata. Reminds me a lot of Jirurun's driven melancholies as heard in Kamui, RefleX and Alltynex Second.

---

Put Cyber Brawl (32X)'s OST on while doing other things, and although it's VS fighting rather than STG - there's a lot of stuff fans of Tecno Soft's MD soundtracks will love. Naruto (Fully Armoured) is absolute Thunder Force IV material - chugging power chords, soaring elegiac leads and a battering drum sound.

Just a killer OST in general, in composition and tone alike. I remember hearing from CIT that it actually doesn't use the 32X hardware at all, being entirely YM2612-based. That would put it right up there with the machine's absolute best if so.

And uh, to keep this on-topic, here's the similarly bangin' Devil Crash MD rendition of Bloodstained Lake from Elemental Master. (DCMD is another for a "shooting music in non-STGs" thread)

Rise from your grave old thread.

While snooping around on vgmrips a few days ago I stumbled upon the Metal Hawk soundtrack.

Interestingly, it seems to be another case of a game with one, single fantastic song and a bunch of filler around it (though not too bad, admittedly).
What stood out here was that it was the stage 4 theme that was the high quality song. Not something you'd usually attract players with.

Have a listen. I reckon it's really good.

Hosoe Quality. Image That clanking metallic bassline is cool. Reminds me of Dragon Spirit's Graveyard, another punchy riff orbited by spacey leads.

Been digging NMK shooter OSTs lately, specifically P47 Thunderbolt, Saint Dragon, their namesake Thunder Dragon, and Black Heart. Former two are by Sizzla "Viewpoint" Okamura, a master of contrapuntal STG house vibes who can turn the most godawful shitstorm/shithammer into a happenin' joint! Latter is HIDE-KAZ, a man of much fiery post-punk conviction!

>ARDENNES Irrepressible feelgood. Don't be a bitch, Grandpa had it worse. Image

>Theme of BISMARCK Inescapable feelbad. Like Raiden Fighters' "tan-tan-tan" motif on a floor-gripping bender. Dig the head-stomping coda with those discordant bell tones - war is hell, kids!

>Dark Underground Cave "LA DANSE MAGNETIQUE" Smooth. Image

>WILD THUNDER That's a great sneering riff, both its "sup motherfucker" first incarnation, and the second half's more urgent reprise, before the breakdown and the whole thing blowing up again. In between, the morosely pistoning guitars and drums give the featherweight melody a plaintive pull far beyond its tiny mass - HIDE-KAZ does this a lot, I love it. See also Black Heart.

>In The Rain Furied. Attack helicopters on fire in the rain. Image

I like the soundtrack of KatakisII/Crush/Space Blaze very much. It has been made by Marcus Siebold:
https://markussiebold.bandcamp.com/albu ... game-music
Especially the Level 2 Track is very good:
https://markussiebold.bandcamp.com/track/crush-level-2

But none of them ive found to be bad or plain.

That was really unexpected! Seems a lot of it was based on Rendering Ranger R2 (a manfred game in its own right), notably the weapons!

His enforcer (c64) is very close to Space Blaze/Crush as well. Many parts of the level design have connections to some Trenz games like Turrican II, Katakis (c64) and the games of Smash Designs - Turrican 3 and Crush (c64).

Ive made this picture to show some similarities between those games for my Space Blaze/Crush Review:

Haha, finally I see why. Just tried out ACA Terra Cresta, which includes both the Domestic/PSG and International/FM sound versions. I'd only heard the former, and its FC conversion - which are pleasant enough, but not particularly memorable. Int'l has a totally different tone, hyperactive bouncy FM synth fun. Actually sounds damn close to Shimoine's wonderful VRC6 arrangement.

Hello! I'm reviving this legendary thread with a full archive post! I've gone through the thread from the very beginning and gathered everything. I've replaced outdated videos where possible (a negligible amount wasn't findable). For games that had many posts, high praise or high quality overall, I've gathered soundtrack links.

Without further ado, here's the SHMUP music thread archive!

Do tell if something's messed up with it, I did triple check though.

I actually wasn't able to get ARDENNES and Theme of BISMARCK from one of your last posts. Searching the links or the names didn't help. Kinda funny considering it was near the end of the whole affair. You can toss me the tracks and I'll add them to the thing if you want.

Ah, P-47. Extremely niche, that one. No wonder I had no luck! Thanks for your efforts biru.

Such a ridiculously chipper OST  I can't recall its stage/trackname, but holy fuck this got me tapping my foot before I knew what hit me. Okamura has superhuman groove sense.

A monument to the fact that you don't need complex or high quality instruments to achieve what you want. It's no Journey to Silius, but it's exactly as cheerful as you described.

As for me, I do have a song from the list to shill for. I listened to the whole thing, and this one immediately got stuck in my head.

Dimahoo/GMD - The Genius of Battle. Extremely fast, intense, and still fits the fantasy aesthetic. It very much feels like a faster version of an RPG battle theme, and now I'm stuck listening to it.

Mahou trilogy got some underrated OSTs - all consistently reflect their series' balance of panoramic fantasia and face-shredding "sup motherfucker?" STG intensity. Nice castle in the sky, nice crater where that monster tank used to be. Dig the rhythm section on "Lead Departure" keeping the vast sweeping synths in check. Not surprising with Sakimoto and Iwata handling the first two, but if you told me they'd composed DaiMahou as well, I'd be none the wiser.

Wish it went by its stage's more badass+alliterative name - STRATO STORM - but "Being Rushed" and the far better-named DEVIDED BY ZERO (I like the Batwider typo :3) are like MD Gauntlet tracks given an almighty do/die one-credit shoe up the ass. Image Image

Offhand, my favourite fantasy-themed STG soundtrack remains Dragon Saber (a bit of a cheat pick, as it includes the nearly-as-brilliant Dragon Spirit in beefed-up form). Hosoe's interplays of soaring, intricately spiralling leads and primal rhythm has an uncommonly total synergy with the divinely vengeful earth-razing action, and he is also (as Under Defeat and Ibara reestablished a few gens later) a formidable STG hookmonger.

Half-related, his Assault leans somewhat funky, but the Jungle Battle BGM (mahfuckin Apocalypse Now downriver gauntlet) is something a starving T-Rex would write before eating some mahfuckas heads off. Pure keening bloodlust. Image Same basic components as his Dragon* duology, radically different effect.

Updated all the fucked up links in the collection. Some had to move to VGMrips. We also lost the arranged Granada ost :(.
Other than that, should all work now.

Edit: Hey, it looks way tidier after the forum update.

Anyone who has read my posts on here over the years knows I'm a huge Thunder Force IV / Lightening Force fan, and the soundtrack is a major part of that. I preordered the vinyl release from Data Discs before it came out, and when I found out about the new CD issue from Sound Shock last year, I pretty much had to order it on the spot. Everyone talks about "Metal Squad" and rightfully so, but there's so much good music in the game. I'll highlight a couple favorites that aren't as widely discussed, such as Omake 4, and Omake 8. It's crazy to think they had so much amazing music created for the game that they didn't even use it all, and we could have had even more insanely good tracks in game if it were longer, or if they had swapped out a couple pieces.

I love that Einhander's soundtrack is a combination of atmospheric pieces and more intense, energetic stuff. I've always appreciated the ramp-up between the subtlety of the stage 1 track up to the mid-boss, and then the "Chase" piece that plays after that.

Also really digging the GunVein soundtrack, but stage 4 might be my favorite right now.

I just played Air Assault (aka Fire Barrel) by Irem today for the first time (vert, kinda sequel to Air Duel) and was immediately struck at how uniformly excellent the music is through the whole game! Really deserves to be heard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtGEu1xUhRQ

The game is quite generic but solid fun with loads of blowing shit up, and unusually easy, the first Irem shmup I ever played for the first time without pulling my hair out haha

A couple of themes from Guardian Force that I particularly like:

--Theme for Mata-Hari's convoy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oavnVGJIHkw . Provisional name I dreamed up: "Stay of Execution" (largely because of the bells that sound every so often)

--Theme for Full Metal Jacket, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoFPgFEDFVs . Provisional name: "Anomaly"
