The level of quality in Steams jp* shmup catalogue is simply staggeringly high. Any attempt at ranking them is going to be incredibly subjective because the library is just rich with excellent titles.

*not counting no-name indie euro crap when talking about steams shmup library, not that there aren't quality western devs too.

I don't think I could do that with any sort of authority but these are all games that I personally enjoyed.

Deathsmiles - http://store.steampowered.com/app/314180/
Mushihimesama - http://store.steampowered.com/app/377860/
Eschatos - http://store.steampowered.com/app/378770/
Crimzon Clover - http://store.steampowered.com/app/285440/
Space Moth DX - http://store.steampowered.com/app/425340/
Bullet Heaven 2 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/412670/
Gundemonium Recollection - http://store.steampowered.com/app/92200/
QP Shooting Dangerous - http://store.steampowered.com/app/316600/

Not a shmup, rather a twin stick shooter/roguelite, but get it anyway as it's fab :D

Or just compile a top 3/5/10/20?
Not a top, since I didn't use any qualitative order, but here's a few of my picks from the Steam sale that are worth a look, IMO:

DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours
Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION
Deathsmiles
Mushihimesama
Astebreed
REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR
Waves
Scoregasm
Raiden IV: OverKill
Triangle Service Shmups Collection
Sine Mora
Renegade Ops

DARIUSBURST Chronicle Saviours is my clear favorite. It already became one of my favorite shmups. It may be more expensive than the other titles, but it has plenty of content, modes, and plenty of references to past titles in the series (from old ships, old soundtracks, ...). IMO, it's a blast to play.
Crimzon Clover WORLD IGNITION, Astebreed and REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR are usually cheap, and very fun titles. You can do no wrong with any of the three, which are all very different from one another.
Deathsmiles and Mushihimesama are Cave titles, with many available modes, some imperfections in the ports, but very worthwhile nonetheless.
The Triangle Service Shmups Collection has plenty of titles, and are an enjoyable diversion (the individual titles are also for sale).
Sine Mora is disliked by some people (either because the stages are too long, or because enemies take too many shots to die), but I find it quite enjoyable, it looks lovely, it has a great soundtrack, and some interesting enemy designs. And it's quite cheap as well.
Renegade Ops is a bit unlike the other titles (it's more of a stage-based, free-roaming game where you control either land or air based vehicles (it depends on the stage), and blow shit up; the story is pure 80's Saturday morning cartoons), but it's a very fun title, and again, it's being sold for quite cheap.
Waves and Scoregasm are score-based titles similar to, say, Geometry Wars. If you like the genre, both are worthwhile.
Raiden IV: OverKill is a more traditional shmup, but it's still very enjoyable, and worth a look.

@STG4WD
Buy Eschatos if you're cheap, and DBCS and Eschatos if you're not.

Someone who doesn't think Astebreed is the best thing ever?! Ah, that's refreshing.
Between overused Anime tropes, confusing camera angles, pretty low difficulty on Normal (once you know that super OP special attack you can use every 10 seconds exists, it's over) and that unnecessary and uncomfortable camel toe (you know the one, the one between stage 4 and 5) all I found was a very very pretty game. And a very epic stage 5.
After having finished it once while only dying at the final boss (f**k giant balls of doom by the way), I decided it wasn't worth my time, and asked for a refund.

I take it neither of you have bothered scoring at all. Or playing on Hard difficulty.

I personally don't like Eschatos (though if you know of some way to buy the soundtrack without the game, I would highly recommend that), and would highly recommend Crimzon Clover: World Ignition (though I bet by now everyone who has even a passing interest in the game already has it), Astebreed, Kamui, Alltynex Second, and REVOLVER360 RE:ACTOR. I've admittedly barely played the latter but enjoyed what I have played despite the controls being clearly better-suited for a gamepad (with triggers to rotate) than a keyboard. I second clippa's recommendation of Enter the Gungeon, and along similar lines I also recommend Downwell. If you like twin-stick shooters Assault Android Cactus is worth keeping an eye on, though I haven't played it myself. Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo is cheap and pretty good though it's not actually on sale.

Astebreed is good, but you need to play for score yes. Otherwise it's just too easy.
kane wrote:Dariusburst: The game is passable outside of the good arcade mode. The bigger reason is, if you are looking at getting a few good shmups with no strong preference for absolutely getting a Darius game, for the same price, you can get a whole bunch of EXCELLENT games. Random example: Gundemonium Collection is 3 better games at $5.
While I agree that the price is a shame, I think the game is unique and excellent enough to be priceless. IMO there's nothing quite like Darius Burst (even in its home franchise), so the price point is really irrelevant.

I'm not sure I would take it over, say, a bundle containing Eschatos/Mecha Ritz/Alltynex Trilogy/Gundemonium, etc. but I think the game is easily as essential as every one of those.

The arcade mode is far, far, far more than good, also.

*triple edit*

Actually, the current sale price point of 25 dollars is probably just right tbh.

Although my last shmup purchases were Raiden IV: OverKill from GoG and SkyForce: Anniversary from Steam a couple of days ago, i'm thinking on getting Deathsmiles, too. The artstyle and action are looking great.

Picked up Wolflame today and been playing it for about 4 hours straight. This is exactly what I'm looking for in a shooter and has a great early 90s Toaplan and Seibu feel. Bullets actually come out of gun barrels instead of nebulously appearing in the middle of an enemy, waves of tanks coming out of bunkers and forests in smooth formations, fast bullets with no micro hitboxes, kickass bosses with lots of parts to blow off before going in for the final kill. I love this game so much!

I'm planning to buy Eschatos + Judgement Silversword (I own them on 360, but now that I live on campus I only get access to my 360 at home every few weeks or so), Raiden 4 (I've been meaning to play it for years), and then I'm deciding on one of the Astro Port games (never played one before).

Of the Astro port games I'm deciding between Satazius (I've been having a hankering for some Gradius lately), Wolflame (very conventional, but apparently good?), and Gigantic Army (really not sure what to make of this one, but maybe it's a winner?)

Though not a shmup, I'd say Gigantic Army is the best, followed by Satazius.

GA is not your typical Contra/Metal Slug style run and gun. But rather a heavy handling blaster where learning to master your mechs handling turns it from a clunky piece of scrap to a smooth graceful berserker. Stages, bosses, and everything are well designed for intense twitch gameplay, and the game even has a brilliant scoring system that rewards speed killing and constant action.

Satazius is a 100% solid Gradius homage that some might call better then its inspiration. It's not the deepest game around, lacking much in the way of scoring past survival, but it's fun enough to be enjoyable any time.

Well I ended up buying both Satazius and Gigantic army; I figured that I would want to play both at some point, and right now I could get both for the price of one.

Fine, fine purchases. GA is actually one of my top favorite arcade style games. Heavy metal berserker action. Enjoy.
