Thanks to everyone who came to the event, or watched us on the streams, and to my partners-in-crime Prometheus and Adversity1!

I didn't have one minute for myself in the 6 days of preparation + event, so I kind of regret not having been able to spend more time talking to everyone, but I'm glad to see everyone enjoyed the show, including our Japanese players!

It's a shame you didn't have any time free to join us, as I was hoping you could have joined myself, Eaglet and Plasmo in sessioning Garegga. We had a pretty good score battle going on during Saturday. There's always next year, of course. ^_-
(You need more helping hands!)
Thanks for the hard work!

I always got a kick out of how my French friends called it "The Stunfest", but this year I understood why. It's unique enough to warrant the article. There's nothing else like it!

Obviously this year was a huge success and I have to first thank both Prometheus and Erhune for an intense 5-6 months of organizing to make it all happen. We started with only a vague idea about how to proceed, but through a process of discussion and proposals we cobbled a bunch of funny and interesting ideas together (and with a little more room to spare this time!). The actual event days were an "Infinite Burst" of stage set-up, schedule coordination and moving around with our Japanese visitors, really exhausting but we made it through. Erhune held us down on stage at every step of the way and I'm very grateful for that. The only downside was that I barely got to hang out with either of them!

Next let me shout out the players yo. All three had pretty much not been overseas before (two had been to Korea once), and were dropped orbital shock trooper-style into France for most likely the most jam-packed week of their lives. We did everything possible in the short amount of time we had, from ascending the Eiffel Tower on foot, walking all around Paris, visiting an arcade in a warehouse, eating Udon, doing press interviews, doing superplays, signing stuff and playing Puyo Puyo. Their demos were excellent, my personal highlights being SPS's day one run against the Ura loop and Hattori's first double play. I also had a lot of fun watching SPS and Hattori battle it out on Puyo Puyo upstairs on the Superplay Live stage (here's one: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1szqi ... start=6606). When we got back to Japan, the guys stuck it out for a final closing interview with Narita city television that dragged us out into the middle of Narita city for 2 hours after a 22 hour trip via Hong Kong. Hopefully that will air sometime next month.

Oh, shout outs to Kan too, that Tetris run was amazng!

Next I gotta shout out all the French players who looked after us. Without some of them, we'd probably still be in France!(somebody let me know if I'm getting names wrong): imaliplusRAM and his friend whose name I forget (urgh!) who took us all around Paris, Oli-san (who volunteered to walk around with Sakari-san for a Denjin Gecha segment where they asked girls whether they would prefer Takahashi Meijin or Chiyomaru Shikura and helped me out a lot), Bruno (without his help we might have missed our train to Rennes), James (who brought all the cabs), Alfarabi (a true gentleman, and the man who set up the PCBs all weekend), whoever the guy with the big hair was who said Bonjour! to me every morning and painted amazing art, Lemonlie for commiserating on my Streetpass French region quest, Frank and all the guys at Coin-op Legacy (http://coinoplegacy.com/) for throwing an amazing welcome party for the players on our first night. We were actually getting pretty impatient with the bus ride just because we were so tired, but once we got inside and saw how great their arcade was, we forgot all that. A must-visit if you're in Paris.

System11 folks of course represented all weekend. Really enjoyed Icarus' Crimzon Clover play and can't wait to see him on World Ignition, watching DEL on dat Manpuku (still have yet to see the stream run gotta watch this weekend), mind-melding with WTN and Plasmo about Donpachi (translation coming in like two weeks!), talking shop with Spadgy, reminiscing about Tokyo pizza/Ebisen dayz with Eaglet and meeting CHI, Endokarb, Ptoing, Smraedis, nuskool and other folks whose forum names I forget but whose faces I don't!

There will be a segment on Stunfest going up on 電人☆ゲッチャ (Denjin Gecha) at 21:00 JP Time Friday May 9th (i.e. today!) which is a weekly video game show with Takahashi Meijin as one of the hosts. The link is here for anyone that wants to have a look though it's likely less visuals and more talky talk. Still hopefully they'll present the results of the Takahashi Meijin vs. Chiyomaru poll  :

http://live.nicovideo.jp/watch/lv176903695

Anyway that's about enough rambling for me. Back to the grind as usual, and only 6 more months before we have to start organizing Stunfest 2015. ;)

I had a bit of a brainstorm the other day. I don't know if this is a good idea, so cut me off if this sounds terrible. Okay, so how cool would it be if there were some kind of event or showcase within Stunfest where indie shmup developers could introduce and demonstrate their games? Kind of like a Western version of Comiket's doujin scene. I got to thinking about this because a lot of Japanese developers use conventions as a staging point to build hype for their games, but I don't think that kind of graduated marketing/advertisement model has a Western equivalent.

This was done at Stunfest, along the upper gallery. The Boob-bouncing game was the most interesting. It complimented the Giant Boob that Rennes town council had recently erected outside. (Its in the Resevoir Porks photo on a previous page of this thread).
Indie developers everywhere, showcasing their games, some were even shooters.

^^ that looks great mate!

Bit of a delayed response (I've been away again) but I had a great time at Stunfest. I think I mentioned to a few of you that my memory isn't the greatest (I'll probably add to the list as I think of things) but here are a couple of highlights for me:

- The event/venue itself was fantastic. Great to play various games and especially shmups I'd not even heard of before.

- DEL's MMP run/score on the Friday and on the big screen/stage on Saturday. Smraedis' run on the big screen/stage, Spadgy's many 1cc's, Various people playing Garega and the many other runs I saw over the weekend. It was great just watching people playing games in general, I definitely learned a lot from you talented bunch of people.

- "Pain au chocolat with chocolate"

- The Sunday "special stage" late night crew. Innit.

- CHI trolling.

- 4 hour train journey back with snack-bar carriage rendezvous with DEL.

- Spadgy playing the jet ski game.

- Best part was definitely meeting everyone. You guys made the trip!

nuskool - Good to meet you. We could have met at INSERT COIN, but better late than never. Thanks for making that train journey back bearable. The Black Label perfume turned out to be a good choice for the Ball n'Chain.

Sometimes how good at a game you are is just a matter of the imagination!

And great gallaries Icarus. Really summed up the weekend, rather than my mass of photos of people staring at screens.

On that note:

One hell of a four nights!

But, sincerely, you can do it very cheap. Aside from the train ticket from London (about £140) I spent £45 on food etc across the four days (I don't drink, so you might need more there), 3-day Stunfest pass was €25, and our hotel room was something like £15 per night per person.

That doesn't sound too bad! I expected it to be a little more. I wonder if the train ticket could be even cheaper if booked very early. The hotel must be tough though, whenever I've gone to france or had friends go to france, the complaint was always the same; that they couldn't find a vacant hotel.

Still the fact that stunfest is in france kind of makes me regret bunking some of those french lessons I got in HS lol.

The article what I wrote about Stunfest just went up on Eurogamer today. Here if you're interested.

Plasmo, smraedis, Icarus, Eaglet and DEL even got a deserving nod, as did DEL's MMP Manpuku mode WR.

Edit: Props to all of you guys (especially those there for drinks on the final night). It was really those chats outside cafes and over breakfast where (without any of us including me really realising it) the angles and ideas in the feature built. Particularly, Endokarb and DEL's passionate case for recognition of the players, and how it is players that arcade gaming is really about: that really shaped my piece. Cheers all!

Great article, spadgy! It was well-written and it was interesting to read about the atmosphere and all related events that took place there since I didn't attend the event. I found one typo though :)

Cheers spadgy. Recognition of the players/the endusers in this industry is something I've been banging on about for years. I've always felt the video games industry has been guilty of ignoring its customers. Imagine if a local restaurant didn't care or at least give a nod to its regular customers.....wouldn't last very long as a business would it?!

That's an embarrassing one. Thanks for spotting it. I'll contact Eurogamer now. Hopefully it can be updated fairly easily; I imagine so.

And thanks guys, for the kind words.

Great article! You spelled Ikaruga incorrect in it's last instance, and shouldn't CAVE be "CAVE" and not "Cave"?

Oh lord! And good point re Cave/CAVE. It is technically an acronym, after all. Even though in the logo it's lowercase. There's so much resistance in many publication's style-guides to forced acronyms (like when the marketing/PR teams of the UK Game brand stores, or Lego, insisting it should always be GAME and LEGO in print), but I think here you're right. I think I'm used to lowercasing in such contexts, I got a little overzealous here! Alas, the chap who puts this up on Eurogamer is now away for a week, but I'll do my best to get it fixed ASAP!

Show's what happens when you spend years as a print journalist with a subbing and proofing process to back you up! (Poor excuse).

Anyway, apart from my daft, embarrassing typos, I'm glad you like the piece! (Why couldn't I misspell 'necessary' rather than a game I know well, and a three-letter player name!

EDIT: Actually, looking at emails from CaVe, to the west they use 'Cave Interactive', 'CAVE' and 'cave', so... well... maybe I actually missed 'Interactive'. Or a lower-case 'c'! Regardless, I'm splitting hairs!

I've always been discouraged from that in journalism, as it misses too much that might be a quirk of writing style.

Anyway, in this case I'm not sure it would help in terms of 'SPN', 'Ikargu' or 'Cave'. :(

Out of those, I'd be most interested in seeing Crimzon Clover (played by ISO? though I'd be more interested in Original mode), Espgaluda II, Psyvariar 2, and Batrider, but since Psyvariar has no chance of winning that poll, I'd vote for the other three. Dunno how to register though because of the anti-bot question.

Please, please, please bring TATEHA over for Batrider. It'd be really cool to see him again, and his skills on Advanced Course are a thing of beauty.
Also, just posted my votes at forum.shmup.com. Get hype!

I'd love to see an Original player too, but for a public event, Unlimited would probably be more exciting to watch. :3
