Stunfest 2014 : Dates and Japanese guests !

Post by PROMETHEUS »

Stunfest 2014 • Downtown Rennes, France / May 2nd-4th

Hi all !

So last sunday in the beginning of the episode of STGWeekly, we did an early announcement for Stunfest 2014 to let everyone know that the event rolls again this year with three Japanese shmup superplayer guests. I'm happy to announce that Hattori, SOF-WTN and SPS will be be coming to Stunfest 2014 :)

ImageImageImage

Hattori is a Ikaruga specialist who will demo do double play in Easy mode. His mastery is really impressive to see as he really brings unexpected double-play style and tricks to his play.
He says : "I will be playing Ikaruga double play at Stunfest 2014. My goal is to hit a big score and get a full game clear. I’ll be playing on easy mode, so relax and enjoy. See you soon!"
Hattori picture credit to: Yusuke Kashiwazaki/Red Bull Content Pool
WTN will be showing Dodonpachi at Stunfest. Long time shmup player, very technical, we will get the chance to see him go for Hibachi. He has many special tricks up his sleeve that will impress anyone aquainted with DDP.
He says : "Thank you for the opportunity to play in France. I haven’t played Dodonpachi much lately so I’m a little rusty, but I’m working to give everyone a superplay to remember. Looking forward to it! (I think the bullet cancelling sections of stage 3, and stages 5 and 6 will be the highlights in my run!)"
SPS is a Ketsui terminator. His level of consistency seems off the roof on this game, not only at surviving but also scoring very high. He said he is going for Ura 2-ALL at Stunfest... Let's see what happens!!
He says : "Ketsui is a really fun game, and I’d be happy if my play can show a lot of people in France just how fun it can be. I’m also looking forward to meeting a lot of overseas players. For Stunfest 2014, I’ll be going for a Ura 2-loop clear, so please come and support me at the event."

Jon, Matthieu and I did our best to prepare everything long enough in advance so that we could announce earlier this year and make it easier for anyone wanting to go from a long way away to plan a trip. As you know last year Icarus, DEL, Plasmo, CHI and Endokarb made the trip from UK/Belgium/Germany/Italy, so there was a lot of shmup enthusiasts present with many from France as well as Kamui, Clover-TAC and NAK, and it was a really great opportunity for people with a common passion from many different places to meet and get to know each other. It was amazing to watch superplays, hang out around the cabs, see each other play and have a truly international meet with plenty of good games and obviously very high quality superplays. Shmups played in front of a "mainstream" crowd who really enjoyed the show was really something to see, too.

This year, by announcing 3 months in advance, we are hoping to see even more people come to Stunfest from abroad. It's looking quite good already as some have let me know they are planning to go again or come for the first time from a long way away. It's also possible TAC & Kamui will be there again. Jon & Matthieu are making the trip from Japan. If you don't want to miss this unique opportunity, have some spare money & time, please do consider planning a trip to Rennes, France in early May !!

Expect to be able to free play to your heart's content on a solid line-up of shmup dedicated cabs with many games available. Usually, we have a good bunch of Raizing (Garegga, Batrider, Bakraid..), a lot of Cave (... most), and frankly quite a lot of other games as well such as Psikyo games, Change Air Blade, "old school", etc. We make the list and switch the games around based on requests and general observation of what gets played or not. I'll give more info about this later !

The event itself is really something, and this year is its 10th anniversary, so 3hitCombo, the association (non profit) who organizes it, is preparing a appropriate edition for an event many people have come to love and which has grown steadily and probably beyond expectations over the years. A lot of games to just play for free (rythm games, bomberman, racing, indie games, fighting games, puzzle games, shmups...), take part in fighting game tournaments against skilled players, watch matches with great commentary and heated atmosphere, conferences but also concerts all themed around video games and the diversity of ways to play or enjoy them.

In any case, we will also be careful to bring good streaming coverage of the event so that everyone can enjoy the show and see what's going on online.

If you would like to contribute some money to Stunfest for their efforts, note that they are non profit, and this year they launched a crowdfunding campaign to be able to bring aspects of their event to the next level, and for more information about the event in general, check this page : http://www.ulule.com/stunfest-2014/
The dates and general area are already 100% confirmed, but contribution will help for everything they explain on this page.

That's it for now, but we'll relay more information later and keep watching this topic so if you want to go, have any questions or comments, go ahead and again please do consider actually coming!! Let shmups ConKer!!

Awesome, official confirmation at last. ^^
I have my work days booked off already, just need to organise travel and accommodation with the guys again. We should have a nice little group coming along, as I know DEL, CHI, Plasmo and Smraedis are trying to sort things out now.

Glad we got a thread going. :D

I'm in the final stages of planning, more or less ready to book my tickets. Super psyched to attend this fantastic event, and to meet the UK/European shmup crew. Still need to iron a few things out, but at this point I am determined to make this happen.

As I mentioned in the STG Weekly broadcast, I'd like to try to get an English stream of the event going. That's still very much a dream, but I'll do everything I can to make it work. I'd also love to try to interview the players and just generally document the event for the benefit of those who can't attend.

Should be an awesome time. So excited. :3

I'll try to make it there.
Gonna have to make sure there's nothing big planned with my gf or family. Looks like it should be aight. :)
Would be a lot of fun to meet all you guys!
Seeing SPS in action again would be insane. The dude's a monster. Nobody comes anywhere close at Ketsui.

Hiya there, I'm the Matthieu in question for those wondering :)

Very glad to see much enthusiasm here! Let's do even better than last year!

Interviewing and generally talking to the players won't be a problem. I don't know how much this year's players can speak English (don't get your hopes too high about this, even though the players last year managed to get some simple conversation going on after overcoming their initial embarrassment), but we'll have both Jon & me for the English/Japanese translation, and I'm sure a lot of you are dying to try your madz Japanese skillz :p

As for the streaming part, that might be a little bit more difficult both for technical and organisational reasons. The livestreaming of the main scene is technically managed by the Stunfest crew, and not directly by us (the Wasshoi in Europe / SuperPlay Live team). Moreover, since the event will take place in a new location this year, I've heard that Internet access is more problematic than usual. Anyway we'll probably know more when things settle a bit (most things are still in quite early stage), and I myself would love an English streaming too.

Ah, good to know! I personally cannot speak or read any Japanese, though I am hoping to learn soon. So I would be relying on you guys for translations. Good to know I have a few resources to call upon. 8)

Thanks for the update. Once I book my tickets I'll get in touch with you about this in more detail. I can definitely understand how it might be a problem. I think it's something worth trying for though, especially with the international focus of the event.

Absolute worst case scenario I will just take video constantly and maybe make a little documentary or something. No matter what happens I would like to try to document it as well as possible in English.

Yep, this is going to be awesome. I saw some Japanese players talking about this event during a stream a few days ago, so it looks like the word's already getting around. Maybe some more international fans will be in attendance this year.

WTN! While the other players are amazing too, I've already seen what their best looks like. WTN's strategy is more unknown, and something I really want to see.

If I could tag along with you, and I weren't intruding, I'd love to come along too!

EDIT: And, of course, I can turn up as a journalist; cover the event for a publication; most likely a website, I'd say.

I'm making a tentative list of shmup attendees, if you're coming and I didn't add you - or if I added you and you're not coming, or for any reason don't want to appear on the list - let me know, through pm this topic or whatever!

Years ago when he was scoring in the 70m range, through intermediaries I offered him WAY more money than $200 for a video and was told no.

I would recommend this hostel, 25min walk from train station totally reachable comfortable and cheap (20€ night)

I did ask him for this when I was at Ebisen, but he acted kind of like.. yeah maybe..
But I think if he doesn't want to, in the end that's his right.

The guys and I stayed at this one last year, which is a 2min walk from the station. :3
(And a 2min walk is heaven when you've been on a train or three for 11hrs.)
