I just thought I would pass this along to fellow shmuppers and also help out some under-represented indie devs in the process.

The steam sale on now also includes the well-reviewed shmups:

Gundemonium Recollection - $1.99
GundeadliGne- $1.99
Hitogata Happa - $1.99

Or, the entire trilogy above as a set - $4.99

Jamestown - $3.39

All of these games are 50% - 66% off the usual price, and the sale has another 4 days to go (ends July 22nd). If there are any other worthy games in the steam sale that I didn't mention, please go ahead and post it for others to see.

The eXceed series is worth picking up, all three for $4.99.

Mandatory Steam link dump. All these titles are 50% off through the remainder of the sale:

Ether Vapor Remaster:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/214570/
($3.99)

Satazius:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/203990/
($2.99)

The eXceed Collection:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/15960/
(Together: $4.99, $1.49 for the first $2.99 for the other two separately)

Sine Mora is also part of the big sale so it's 75% off: http://store.steampowered.com/app/207040 ($2.49)

Retro-Grade: http://store.steampowered.com/app/222660 Also 75% off at $2.49.

Beat Hazard Complete pack: http://store.steampowered.com/sub/8500 $3.24 This one you can put your music in and blast away. Beat Hazard Ultra is the way to go: no inertia, toned down lighting effects, more enemies, better synchrony with the songs.

I highly recommend Gundemonium Recollection and GundeadliGne. While GundeadliGne's system is pretty bullshit, I actually learned to stop being frustrated with the game and see how long I can go with rank cranked on high to net in the score.

Also throwing in a good word out there for the eXceed series. eX2nd and eX3rd on Steam are some of the best doujin STGs out there.

For those who prefer to play a more classic hori, SATAZIUS is a great STG if you want to get nostalgic with retro non-bullet-hell horis of the genre. Plays a lot like the older Gradius games with a much fairer hitbox and not as huge a de-power penalty for deaths.

Holy crap I think I'm sold! The inertia was really what got to me in the original BH.

Razor 2 is also on sale for just a few bucks. Although honestly, it's not very good.

Any preferences between Sine More PS3 and PC? Probably getting Jamestown, if nothing else.

(Dog shit) vs (dog shit with framerate linked to monitor refresh rate) vs (spend money on another shmup). Your choice.

Glad there's some decent shmups on sale, will look into getting them before the sale runs out.

Yeah, Beat Hazard Ultra removing the annoying inertia is what made me put 88 hours into that thing. Couple it with Lovers Immortality (a doujin album that contains the music to the —for now— canned Under the Lotus) and you get a full winner.

Sine Mora looks better on PC but, as said above, it's really the next darling of the press after Ikaruga. Nothing else came after it, nothing between Ikaruga and Sine Mora. Name dropping to the max. The reflection mechanic sucks (either play Gigawing, Jamestown or RefleX for a proper reflection) and the time mechanic is even WORSE. Stick to Warning Forever or get Project RepLiser from Nanapo Store. MUCH better use of the time mechanic as a sort of life bar.

Another vote down for Razor2, frankly, really awful.

I think there are a couple of borderliners too:

Yar's Revenge (being cheaper before I would hold until the next sale):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/99120 ($4.99)

Retrovirus (Forsaken-meets-Rez):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/227800 ($9.99)

Thanks for the heads up guys! I got all of the above recommendations (except for the music rhythm games and Satazius) :P

Hey, Satazius is by ASTRO PORT. Those guys are freaking awesome and so is the game. I agree the difficulty curve is much lenient than most horis but the devs want you to play on the hardest settings. The tagline of the game was "Are you prepared to die?" And that came before the Dark Souls fad, heh. Seriously, get it before Ghegs comes with a hammer or something! :P

Oh, Gatling Gears is 50% off too: http://store.steampowered.com/app/102810

Not the lowest it's been but it's on sale.

edit: Waves is also 75% off: http://store.steampowered.com/app/107600

The one and only game where counterstopping it will net you an achievement. Take that, CAVE.

Thanks for pointing out some of those, like the eXceed series, Ether Vapor and Satazius. I had no idea they were even on Steam. I thought we were still stuck with Jamestown, the Gundemonium lot, and Razor as traditional shmups, which have all been around for a while. Sweet! :)

You're welcome. Guess we spent most of the time promoting the Siter Skain games so we had little time to go back to review our back catalog but, with the Steam sale going at full power until monday, I'll go around spreading the word.

Spotted Geometry Wars 2 at $3: http://store.steampowered.com/app/8400 Compatible with Big Picture mode and all.

I think we pretty much covered most of the shmups on Steam. Most of the other interesting ones are still stuck on Greenlight...
