Who was the guy who did a 360 indie shmup recently? Had a thread about it in here. It was very DDP. With badly drawn women.
(I realise that doesn't necessarily narrow it down for some of you.)

I vote we bitch about him. Where's the next game, already? Get a fucking move on, love.

Need my next fix of badly drawn women, dammit.

Can someone do an actual real translation on the Cave section on that page or are we going to act like idiots?

I will admit I wasn't a big fan of Cave due to the direction they taken their shooting games over the last decade. I always like the early 90s Toaplan-era stuff when it comes to shooting games.

My opinion is look at Toaplan and see how many companies were made after Toaplan when down under. The most important thing is the passion. Without the passion shooting games weren't have gotten far has much as it did.

I assumed what elixir posted on shmups twitter was pretty much all that was said. "Cave's development completely corresponds to online/social games, consumer game section has been abolished"

That sounds like just a rewording of the neogaf post. A real translation of that paragraph is needed. If Cave was going to do something like this, wouldn't they make the announcement themselves?

I think it's a real shame that they've gone, but as accompany they sucked big eggs.

Ideally you would want the core team (those interviewed in the shooting history book) to form their own company. But I don't think it will happen, way too risky. As you get older your priorities change and that regular paycheck becomes more important.

If they can make their money on ios games why not. Ikeda often mentions that he wanted to rescue the arcade industry and apologised for not doing so! It's dead. I just hope Tanaka can find work making those amazing backgrounds.

As it is they've left a hell of a legacy. RIP :|

Looking at the graph-- blue means sales, red means revenue.

Cave has had two hit social games (Shirotsuku and Kunitsuku) but without any other successful titles, their revenue was still in negative territory. In order to expand and focus on perfecting their online catalog, their historical "consumer games" branch will close. "ARPPU" [development costs?] is lower for social gaming than for consumer titles. [I guess abandoning development for more expensive consumer titles would help put Cave's finances back in the black]

The article is giving opinions, based on sales/revenue data.

Nice eulogy Dan. Thankfully before they popped their clogs we were immortalised with them. We're a part of Cave history. We shared the glory and lived the dream. We mean something.

Yah, been working on it the past couple of days. I suppose I should go make a thread in dev forum about that soon.

More on topic - as I said to Frenetic in his time of torment - when Toaplan folded, people moved on.. we got great games. It's not to say history won't repeat itself. Sometimes, a company/branch of a company folds for business reasons. It's not like the developers just stop working.

For instance (outside of shmups), when Freestyle games were bought up by Actiblizzard it was pretty certain to be the end of rhthym games from them when they axed the guitar hero line and redundancies were happening left right and center. Yet I have it on good authority they are now in the stage of recruiting testers for some sort of upcoming rhythm game.

Unfortunate, but yeah, I don't think anyone was surprised to hear this news.

There's always the possibility that some of the people involved will keep contributing to the genre via other companies. Even if that doesn't happen, we have numerous other developers (both corporate and doujin) carrying the torch, and of course a catalog of hundreds of extant STGs that I guarantee most of us have never even played the majority of, let alone played at a high level.

STGs probably aren't doomed or anthing, but I'll pour one out for Cave regardless. Thanks for the years of good games.
