It is inevitable that this will happen when a company specialises more and more.....it looks like the same thing has happened to Arika who have produced the Grandmaster Tetris games.

Boutique game shops need to put some time into branching out a bit and leading people a different way instead of endless refinement.

This is very sad news. I hope that a new company will rise from the ashes of Cave, like Cave was formed from the ashes of Toaplan. Or if Asada and Ikeda joined Qute and started working on Ginga Force 2 :P

Along with Akai Katana Consumer Edition, Dodonpachi Campaign Edition, ESPRa.De. (what do Atlus re-release that isn't Disgaea?), Progear No Arashi (unless Capcom full their finger out), Mushihime-sama Blue Label and Dangun Feveron.

There was a blue labeled version playable at a Matsuri that is not the same as the pcb/ported Matsuri 1.5. It may have been the beginnings of the code changes but it still existed and was different. There were also lots of others like..

Deathsmiles: DIE Cave Festival Special Ver
Ketsui Festival Ver
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5 Red Label
Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.01
Dodonpachi Daioujou Score Trial
Oni Death - unreleased prototype
Danmaku Tengoku - unreleased prototype

And the location test versions for SDOJ looked different (and awesome in some cases).

Really glad that they went out on a back-to-basics Pachi game, though I would have loved another Mushihimesama or Deathsmiles.

What horribly depressing news. At least they got a chance to release SDOJ first.

A couple years ago I would have been very upset. As it stands I don't feel anything. Not surprised in the slightest, glad we got the SDOJ port.

It also doesn't have Maniac Mode (Original and Ultra Modes only).

I had completely forgotten about Mushi Futari Red Label.

Sadness, I was hoping for a Mushi 3 & Galuda 3, but it was beyond obvious that it was an unrealistic dream. I am grateful that nearly everything was ported this generation. Since the Deathsmiles port, cave resurrected my interest in arcade games.

Acta est fabula, plaudite.

The play is over, applaud. Cave's arcade division had a good long run and held on better than anyone else. We all knew this day was coming. Not that it's here all we can do is celebrate the greatness that came before.

That's good news indeed. It would be insane to buy Xbox One for just few Cave shmups.

And considering how shitty it looks Xbox One's future I'm wondering which console will be the new home for future shmups. WiiU? PS4? Or they'll do the difference and stick with Xbox360?

I'm quite surprised that Triangle Service managed to outlive Cave's support of the genre. Some of you may remember that T-S was in grave danger of going under around the time that Trizeal was ported to Dreamcast, and Fujino literally begged people to buy the game on their website. I guess it worked.

Let's not forget during this time of mourning that SDOJ wasn't the only 360 STG to release yesterday.

Time For Ikeda , Yagawa and Co. to go form another company that focuses on shmup games that do not suck.

Hire themselves as management so they do not have to argue with the higher ups about how many Tropes and Loli's to include.
A Hardcore gamers reaction to the Lack of Kinect games. Apparently i could of played Dodonpachi with it if i beat a entirely in Japanese Visional Novel piece of shit game called Instant Brain

Yep I forgot that one did get ported.

I fully expect Ikeda to have another go at Cave management and pull another arcade release over the next year. It's been the same story since DOJ. I'd like to get that interview translation sooner rather than later. I don't know why he handed over any Cave power to begin with. He started the company. He should have just bitchslapped everybody left and right from the beginning. Oh you want to make a mahjong game? *slap the taste out* Oh you want social network cell phone shit? *bitchslap*

No matter how much motivation and passion these men have to make arcade shooters, as full-time professionals, there is only so much they can do to combat the apathy of the market. You can give these games all the spin you want and make them as palatable as possible to the average gamer who's ignorant of arcade culture (Ginga Force does a commendable job of this), but the fact remains that there are very few people still interested in playing "bullet hells" as anything other than a smartphone time-killer.

If they aren't simply fatigued of the genre, they see it as a creaky relic of a bygone era of gaming that no one in their right mind would choose over the "immersive," "cinematic experiences" of an Elder Scrolls, Assassin's Creed, or Mass Effect. Ikaruga was the last STG that truly captured the attention and imaginations of the general gaming public, and its American release recently had its tenth anniversary. Companies exist to make profit, and when a source of revenue dries up you have to move on, even if it's to stupid tripe like mobage.

We saw this coming for some time now, not at all surprised but still a bit sad

Their last Matsuri/SDOJ presentation event already looked like a funeral .

I believe Ikeda is a nice guy who didn't really see business management as his forte. He probably felt leaving that side of the operation to the 'experts' was for the best - just so happened they were all rubbish and flushed all the company capital down the toilet.

I do hope Ikeda bounces back. He knows he's loved for his work, and like any creative that should be enough to inspire him to produce more of it. Looking forward to a fresh approach from the man and an all new generation of Ikeda bullet hell.
