I wish the For Sale threads were archivable... especially the ones w/ the Yahoo Japan bidding wars. Some classic moments. Good times indeed.

I must have read every one of them a few years ago when researching for my history video. That was the funnest research of my life. There are threads for them on cave-stg as well without the trolling.

Shit, with the death of Cave, SHMUP's is dead, isn't it. Is there another pro company cranking any of these out, or is it all indie now?

It's a bit of a downer to sit around and wait for Nintendo to resurrect the genre, like they did once with the dead genres that are fighting games and first person shooters.

(Just because something moves, doesn't mean that it's alive.)

Nintendo to resurrect the genre, like they did once with the dead genres that are fighting games and first person shooters.
What do you mean?

Smash bros. ain't classic fighting (it's "arena fighting"), you have Namco, Capcom, Arc System and others dealing with that thing.
Metroid Prime ain't that much fps, they even label it themselves as fpAdventure.

You know what are much more dead genres? 2d beatemups and rail shooters or cabal shooters (where is my Sin and Punishment 3, Nintendo? :p )

Anyway you sounded like you didnt pay attention to shmup scene for last 5 years or something (dont wanna sound rude, sorry, i dont understand). Yeah i guess its indie & doujin now, for the most part.

There's a fair chance that whole post was sarcastic?

Once again, just because something moves, that doesn't mean that it's alive. Remaking Street Fighter 2 and DOOM until the end of time is not the same thing as making a new game.

In the early days everything was so experimental and weird. What genre is Defender? What genre is Robotron? What genre is Joust? What genre is Yie Ar Kung-Fu? What genre is Gauntlet? What genre is Ecco the Dolphin? What genre is Missile Command?

Like with Diablo clones, you almost have to label it by the original game that made the cookie mold popular if you want to be precise. It's absolutely mind blowing that Street Fighter clones are being called "classic fighting" here of all places. Change the control system, win condition, and number of units even slightly, and suddenly we need a new label for it.

The same criticism of remaking the same game over and over could have been said of CAVE, but there was always hope they might have experimented more aggressively back then, you know? It was funny how excited we were by the possibilities of the amazing "new" innovations DeathSmiles was trying out - level select, difficulty select, and being able to fire in two directions instead of just one. (Which I guess makes it "not a classical shmup", eh? It's a "bilateral shooter", like Defender~! Totally! Right? ...Oh, but its an auto-scroller. "Bilateral rail shooter". God there sure are a lot of genres in the genre filter now, eh.)
Metroid Prime ain't that much fps
Case in point, I was talking about Splatoon. Which is a "third person sports shooter". Even though the control scheme is exactly the same as Unreal. And that there's no difference in gameplay whatsoever from being able to see an avatar of your character besides maybe making jumping on platforms easier.

Though yeah, Prime is more of a DOOM clone than most of the modern DOOM clones...

Yeah doom 2016 was closer to painkiller or serious sam in game design than to original doom

Splatoon's best thing for me is jumping into paint liquid and back

I can't think of any modern FPS games (Metroid Prime included) that have anything to do with the original Doom. It's really a completely new genre nowadays. My best comparison is the Serious Sam games, but those aren't completely new anymore either, and are pretty much their own thing in a lot of ways.

(May be a stupid question, but...) Anyone know much about what the Cave Matsuri (https://promo.cave.co.jp/event/matsuri2018/) last week was? I know it was on, but I don't know anything about how it's organised (not even whether it's put on by Cave or by fans) or what its purpose is or what it means (if anything) to the company.

Anyone know of any English reporting on it?

I've been out of that for a few years now. I have been about on social media but I just lacked time to visit.

Deathsmiles and 3 Dodonpachi games are now back and can be playable for iOS 11+ devices. Hope you will revisit again in case you still have these games until now. Sorry, no 64-bit support yet for Espgaluda 2 and all Mushihimesama games.

2 years ago, I enjoyed playing them but them deleted them when updating to iOS 11. This time, it’s up to you to enjoy them again because I won’t be having those again and I rather be interested into rhythm games like Cytus II and Tapsonic World Champion instead of those shmups.

Have fun!
At this rate, I won’t be interested into shmups anymore. I am no longer going to be active in this forum from now on. I am more interested into Kemono Friends, rhythm games, D4DJ, Puzzle Games, Hololive, and Pretty Cure.

Farewell.
