Making overlays usually varies depending on what streaming software you're using, but most of the time you'll need photoshop or a similar image editing program. As far as hardware, there is already a lengthy discussion about capture hardware in the Hardware forum.

However, I'm not saying that this is a bad idea; I think it would actually make for a really good thread. Hardware and software for streaming could merit more focused discussion.

I agree, think it would be cool to have a quick reference thread for those thinking about getting set up to stream. It would also be good to share overlay knowledge to make people's streams look more professional.

Edit: I feel like too much of a noob here right now to get this going... Will see if anyone more established wants to step up...

For overlays, if you don't have Adobe Photoshop, there's a free picture editor called GIMP which I use.

I've seen e.g. Aquas coming with some sick overlays recently...

You should probably change my "Typical Games" to Battle Bakraid.

Also, since YouTube launched YouTube gaming here's my YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Shepardus

i haven't decided whether I prefer streaming to YouTube or Twitch. YouTube has the advantage of quality options for non-partner channels so you can stream at a higher bitrate without screwing over your viewers, but Twitch has Kappa and lets me view chat through an IRC client (much more convenient and lightweight than keeping a browser open for that), and its interface is just less cluttered. I guess the real answer to that is "use Hitbox," isn't it?

At the very least, Twitch still has the benefit of being where most streamers are centered. I don't think having the community fragmented across all three services at random would do very good things for viewership and discoverability. (I like having a single browser extension that constantly tells me when people I follow are streaming, but maybe something similar exists for YT and Hitbox?)

I wouldn't be opposed to switching to one of the other services necessarily, but I wouldn't do it unless one of the others became the new de facto standard for the community, which I sort of doubt will be happening any time soon.

Okay yeah I'm switching to Youtube Gaming from now on since it's a hundred times better.
Twitch is absolute garbage in comparison.

Is there any way to watch the stream after it's over, or does Youtube not archive like Twitch?

YouTube automatically archives streams as a YouTube video, but the streamer can choose to set archives as private if they don't want to clutter up their channel.

Mainly STG and arcade games - Toaplan, Konami and Namco are some of my favourites. A lot of "etc." depending on how I'm feeling.

Well I guess it won't hurt if I share my twitch here.
I haven't streamed in a while, but with Strania and DBCS around the corner this will probably change very soon.

So far: Ketsui, Metal Black, Border Down, and probably Strania and DBCS soon.
