Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread

Post by heisenbergman »

When someone says:
...it was all done tool-assisted (Re-Recording + Savestates)...
like in this video regarding recording a longplay of a game (in this case, DoDonPachi), what exactly does that mean?

(1) Does that mean saving a gamestate, stopping and then reloading the gamestate and re-recording it at the same time?

(2) How does one pause and resume recording an INP file?

Thanks!

Tool assisted means they pause the game and then advance the game frame by frame which allows them to enter inputs with precision.

I'm pretty sure there are MAME builds or other arcade emulators with more tools meant for TASing, the MAME versions I'm used to desynch .inp files on a pause.

Thanks guys. I would assume that the same tools may be useful for studying/practicing a game as well. I may look into those for kicks :)

Shmupmame can already do savestates and per-frame play, it just doesn't allow recording using those tools as it'll desync, so Shmupmame's really all you need for practice if you want to use savestates. To do frame advance, pause the game (P), then hold left shift and hit pause again.

^ Ah thanks. Might try that one of these days.

In other shmup stuff...

Has anyone actually played this Starcraft shmup called Mission Craft?? Is it at least a decent-enough shooter for the novelty value of being based on Starcraft? :P

Is there any way to run Gradius IV: Fukkatsu on MAME without it slowing down to a crawl??

Something I've always wondered about Darius Gaiden

Post by ZacharyB »

In Darius Gaiden, before you fight most bosses, some kind of egg-looking sphere zooms onto the screen and bobs there, multiplying when you shoot it.

What is this thing? It only appears before bosses, like it's heralding their approach.

Has Cyvern Plus ever been romdumped? Or is it like DDP Campaign, there's only like 2 copies out there?

Not as far as I know. I don't think anyone here's really been able to say whether it's official or a well-done hackjob yet let alone get a board or a dump of it.

My i3 didn't run it too well last time I checked. Don't think you'll have much luck. I know that's not much help, but I don't know of any magic fix apart from getting a better computer or waiting for them to optimise it (which will never happen).

Do "modern" graphics even qualify as good? There's certainly a lot of crappy looking un-optimized games out there these days.

IMO Cave games are still the most attractive to look at hands down given the sprite work.

I was looking at some of the late 90s, early 2000 shmups with 3D graphics... I was thinking that they look pretty bad and that the shumps which use a sprite-based 2D art style are much more attractive for me.

I was actually asking because maybe 3D graphics wasn't mature at that time yet and the more recent releases with modern 3D graphic styles might look much better.

Side note: Thanks to your short rundown, I am starting to get the hang of Radirgy. Game plays like a dream once it finally clicks. I think I'm getting just shy of 4m by the end of the first boss now.

It really is! I was put off by it at first, since it is nothing like what I usually play (Which has pretty much just been Cave and NMK), but now that I actually get how the system works, it is really tight. Jumping around a boss slashing the shit out of him is a blast.

Milestone master race.

Maybe that's because CF doesn't have the caravanesque nature of the rest of the games.

Anyone have translations for the endings to DaiOuJou? I imagine the iOS Blissful Death port has 'em, doesn't it?

Ketsui'd also be nice, I always wondered what the true ending said, if there was a difference in endings depending on ship selection, etc.

Well I got to the bottom of it in Garega. I had the S-Option selected so I turned that off and I was able to move the options around at will finally.

I would say that Ikaruga still holds pole position, with a load of visual style even if it's old. Just a beautiful looking game although hard as frozen Yeti balls if you ask me.

Some of the newer titles on XB360 and PS3 like like Raiden IV, Soldner-X, Space Invaders and even the new Galaga (which is a fantastic visual fest and a pretty good revamp of an old game) all look pretty sweet with great 3d graphics. Of course DodonPachi Saidaidujou looks great when you can see whats going on amongst the bullets and explosions.

In the arcades and on PC if you can find it get Crimson Clover that is sweet looking medal fest that plays like a beast on roids. great game.

To be honest I personally like games made of sprites like Battle Garaga and Raiden Fighters series as they are less complicated and I think they also focussed a bit more on precise gameplay.

Still they are all good and all worth owning.
