Cave STG is closing down.
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
just curious, what was on it thats not available here?
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
I know there's detailed scoring and system information on DFK 1.5 there, and some info on DFKBL. There's probably a number of other valuable Strategy threads as well.sven666 wrote:just curious, what was on it thats not available here?
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
ptoing sent me all the strategy thread stuff, I'm just trying to clean it up when I have free time so it's organized and concise.
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
You are seriously only going to save the strategy threads? You seriously can't see any value in anything else? The actual discussions on the actual games mean nothing to you?
You guys well deserve this forum's absurdly low signal to noise ratio.

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
I don't really care about anything else. What's the coolest cave game? News? Personal high score lists? I just want to play. If other areas have any meaningful game discussion/strategy, feel free to send me that.
moozooh said he was going to back up everything and put it in a zip - you can look at it all there when he does. I don't plan on going through the rest on my own.

There's a lot of little information tidbits sprinkled around in the regular discussion threads.sikraiken wrote:I don't really care about anything else. What's the coolest cave game? News? Man, you guys don't really think outside the box much.

As I said, look through it and send it to me to add to the rest.

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
Well, at least he'll be able to go through and find some good info to add here.
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
Don't worry; it's taken a while but I've downloaded the entire site. However, due to the way its engine generates webpages, there are about 56000 files taking up over 2.8 GB with separate files for things such as RSS items and mailto links and whatnot. I have to sift through all of that and delete everything unneeded (at least 80% of it by my estimates) as well as my private messages. I expect the final size for the archive to be less than 100 MB compressed.

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
That's great news. A clarificartion: When you say "everything unneeded" you mean the RSS items and mailto links you mentioned and such? Not actual threads, right?
The reason you guys see me being so anal about all this is because, though I visited EOJ's site from time to time, I couldn't read it ALL the time, because half the time he'd hide the forum for non-members. Then he'd change his mind and make it visible, and then a little later hide it again. So there was always content he'd announce on the frontpage, like the Instant Brain review for example, which I never got around to reading. And there were tons of translations of tidbits scattered all over the place, or analysis/criticism that never made it into a review, etc. So when moozooh makes the zipped file available I'll take great pleasure in sitting down calmly with an icy beverage next to me and going through everything carefully

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
Obviously. Most of the downloaded files are basically garbage generated by the site in response to link exploration (iow. it returned some links as separate files). I only aim to preserve site pages and posts with the corresponding structure, all forums, design/styling elements, and small graphics: smilies, buttons, etc. I won't include files not needed for that.jonah00 wrote:That's great news. Great, good to hear it.
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
Just out of curiosity, what program are you using? I'm using Offline Explorer and the whole forum is about 400MB and 7600 files. I ran the archive 5 times before I could get what is needed (topic, posts, and pictures, and PMs). I have a final size at 260 MB compressed in a HTML File and it includes both cave-stg/forum and the cave-stg.com linksmoozooh wrote:Don't worry; it's taken a while but I've downloaded the entire site. I'm using Offline Explorer Enterprise 6.x. It's possible I've fucked up some settings as the last time I had to use it was in 2005 or so.

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
Anyone ready to put the zipped file online? I've saved the reviews and a few of the longer blog posts, for what it's worth, but if someone can put the entire site online in a single file that'd be far more efficient.
Re: Cave STG is closing down.
This was the only place, where I've kept track of all my personal highscores. Unfortunately I've just stumbled upon this topic just now and didn't save them at all.
If anyone could help me out, it would be much appreciated!

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
I love the irony in that people are talking about what a prick EOJ was b/c he wouldn't tolerate behavior found in this thread. Kind of zen.
Going back to page 2 or so, there have been some greats that have eventually just given up . It's hard not to burn out. I definitely breached that line with gamengai, and as such, I've not added "content" to it for ages, although I probably could add some stuff off my HD. But, for now, it's a static archive + forum which is fine w/ me. I generate enough funds through it to keep it going... even at $35/mo or so.
Cave-STG was great for what it was: a place for people to worship the last company putting out arcade games in the genre we love. But, as it is very specific, the risk of burnout is many fold higher. This is the same w/ Danmakugata. The site op stated he was going to continue playing other games. Games you didn't have to reset if you didn't play the first 2 minutes exactly perfect.

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
You don't have to do that with Cave games either, while, on the other hand, you CAN do that with every other type of game if you are autistic enough (you can even speedrun 100-hour JRPGs if you want and try to go for the "world record" or whatever, for example).
Perhaps if the Danmaku Gata guy had been more focused on clearing games instead of on scoring well in them he'd still be into shooters and still keep running his site today. Even simply downgrading scoring from your main to your secondary goal should help keep you from burning out on games, by allowing you to engage a wider variety of them. Like a wise man recently said:

Re: Cave STG is closing down.
What on earth would make you think that?
But to continue with my train of thought for a moment, consider that the Danmaku Gata guy and EOJ were as hardcore into scoring as it gets. And where did it get them? They grew SICK of their favorite videogames and gave up on them - that's where it got them. Aren't we therefore justified in saying that the way they played these games was the wrong way? If something makes you sick, isn't it therefore, at least for you, a bad thing to do? A wrong thing? And wouldn't the right way to play those games be a way which, instead of making you grow sick and give up on them, a way which would motivate you to keep playing them forever?
But like I said, neither the Danmaku Gata guy nor EOJ have left shooters behind for good. They just need time to allow the sickness to leave their system, and then they'll be right back here for more, because these games are, after all, fucking awesome. The only question is whether, when they come back, they will have learned anything from their little misadventure.
