That is very interesting though. I think it explains things. Even within our own underground/unrecognized communities we have the same kind of stupid stereotypes and prejudices.

Re: Fair competitive practice and shoot'em ups

Post by pestro87 »

I recently just stumbled across this thread and after reading the majority of the posts here, I've decided that from now on I'm only going to submit high scores where I've recorded myself playing the game in real-time on the xbox 360 (as opposed to just uploading an xbox 360 leaderboard replay to youtube or a picture of my score on the leaderboard screen). I've always enjoyed competing on high-score lists and I want it to be a fair competition for everyone involved. I was not aware that pausing was considered cheating by some, nor that you could use it as an exploit... :S Pausing just throws me off while I'm playing so I try to avoid this as best as I can. Having that said, I've never attempted for any "real" high scores so that's probably why I feel this way. I can definitely see what PROMETHEUS and Hagane mean when they said that "pausing" makes for an unfair competition if you're competing on a high level as it helps you to calm the nerves and whatnot (I know that this wasn't exactly what they said but that was how I understood them).

Anyways, (this is already turning into tl;dr...) I was wondering if there's a definitive list of rules for posting in the High-Score section that came as a result of this thread? I still intend to only post live captured runs from now on even if just pictures and/or xbox 360 leaderboard replays are accepted but I'm just wondering out of curiosity.

Thanks

There are no "common" rules, aside from the obvious '1 credit and please don't cheat'. It's almost entirely up to the scoreboard owner.

I see... I guess it's kind of hard to establish common rules that everybody has to agree upon and the fact that different rules would have to apply for different formats (X360, PCB, MAME, etc.). However, I was hoping that there would be some kind of common rules.

Ah well, thanks anyway, trap15!

Please don't stir up this argument again. I dropped paragraphs of rebuttals since my last post for the sake of harmony, but you're tempting me.

Good grief... what a depressive thread.

If someday I become good enough on this games I'll never post my scores, not even my replays.

oh god not this topic again

I wish I'd had the foresight to save 'her' bullshit videos before she deleted 'em. They really were hilariously fake, and they were the sort of runs that if they were legit, they'd be so awesome you'd fight tooth and nail to prove they were legit, not delete them and act like nothing happened. I guess Youtube doesn't have a cache or Archive.org equivalent? :'(

Assuming it's the exact same replay, it's still available on the leaderboards. That's how I saw it.

You might change your mind if you saw the vid, and the mushi arrange one.

Please forgive me Ganelon for I have sinned.
It`s not only the VixyNyan case... it's also the "pausing to take a break" and "arcade true experience" stances some people here have stated. I'd prefer to just post my scores on the 360 leaderboards and not publish then here to avoid any attacks people may throw at me.

Serious question, can you even get on the scoreboards here? :|

My 190mil+ on DOJBL isn't good enough to even get on (last place is 203mil.) In-fact, most of my 1cc's have been ranked out over the years, including Mushi 1.5. The level here is high!

Considering how poor your skills in it are, I'd reckon that's true.

Yeah, it's strange how the Futari leaderboards work, because the replay is visible if you filter to Palm, but not on the combined leaderboard.

You guys should check out her recent livestream of Futari God -- she game-overs in stage 1, and takes probably 8-10 continues to clear the game in total. I normally don't make fun of others' skill whatsoever (like I have any right to), but it makes her audacity to try to post a TAS run on the forum scoreboard all the more ridiculous. It's enough to make me assume that her BL Original score is fake too, given that she says she never plays for score (probably obtained while pause-buffering her way to the 100k+ counter achievement) but that one's on the lower half of the score table so it's probably not worth worrying as much about.

Eh, whatever. You can TAS your way to your precious 100% achievement completion to your heart's content, just don't post those scores to a competitive scoreboard.

Yeah, It actually works similar in some of the other ports too. I remember being able to download one of my own replays from the dodonpachi daifukkatsu Arrange B PAL leaderboards if I made the filters really specific.
