The boss characters from Gunbird 1 and Gunbird 2:

Are inspired by the Dorombo Gang from the anime "Yatterman"

Does anyone else here see the resemblance? I definitely see a parody here.

Also, for anyone who is curious, Team Rocket from Pokemon is based off of the Dorombo Gang. Yea, that's not a shmup, but still interesting trivia nonetheless.

To Aru Majutsu no Index [episode 22]

A game in the arcades called "Near Fantasy Space". An obvious reference to Fantasy Zone.

Hayate no Gotoku! Season 3 [episode 5]

It's kind of hard to see, but it's definitely a bullet hell shooter on the television screen; I just don't know which one it is though.

In the second smaller picture, you can see a red beam which heavily resembles DoDonpachi.

Also, in Tatsunoko vs Capcom (fighting game), there is a playable shmup involving Street Fighter 2 characters:

Ryu in a formal shmup would actually be appropriate, given how many fireballs he's been spamming for the last 20+ years....

Not a Japanese cartoon, but check out the Gradius reference in this music video for Boy Soprano by Xiu Xiu. http://bit.ly/m9saEo

Genuinely creepy. Excellent band, too.

The title says Hiryuu - Flying Dragon, so Toaplan-ish.

Valpiro (the robot) from Gunbird is from the 1970s Tatsunoko anime "Neo-Human Casshern."

One of the Yu-Gi-Oh series has an episode with a guy who uses Gradius cards almost exclusively. I forgot which one.

Also, in Negima!? there's a scene where some of the girls are warped into an alternate universe where they pilot a capital ship being attacked by Space Invaders, and in another scene Asuna is messing around on her calculator which is making Space Invaders sounds.

That would be Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

A Gradius (well, Vic Viper, actually... Gradius isn't very good as it's a normal monster) deck actually made top 16 in the 2010 Shonen Jump championships. (Alex Mitchell's deck, second in the list)

I think that might be a parody of Psikyo's "Space Bomber" instead.

Raystorm (I mean Lei Stalker) on "Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo". Lots of arcade games parodies and references on that series.

Here is a rather obscure one I came across while watching Sherlock Hound: Prof. Moriarty is creating counterfeit money with his henchmen when suddenly the machine producing the coins goes haywire and loads of coins get mangled in the process, creating somewhat familiar looking row of invaders.

Image

Even some of the sound effects from the original Space Invaders play in the background - very nice touch!

I was about to post this. I love this anime. For a shonen action/comedy/ecchi it was a nice surprise. I like the fact that the main character (which is a vampire in the demon's dimension) loves japanese video games but in his house he only has old games (from the Famicom era). So when he askes a human girl that comes to his dimension about Final Fantasy it was a cultural shock for him to learn that Final Fantasy still makes games. And of course his reaction was "What's Final about it?".

Blood Lad is awesome. I usually ignore all shows about vampires. I'm glad I gave this a shot.

Now that you say it the only vampire anime I actually enjoyed from the older ones is Karin (aka Chibi Vampire as it was named the manga in America). I haven't watched yet Vampire hunter D (and I have to) and I'm not fan of Hellsing.

Sorry for the double post, and while this isn't a parody, it's kinda interesting to see it there:

http://postimg.org/image/s7c0vei4h/

In episode 6 of the TV series "City Hunter 3" (late 1980s), the bottle says "Proco Tiat" on it, which is Taito Corp backwards, and is also a reference to Darius.

That looks like a silver hawk (not "the" silver hawk) on the bottle too.
