What is up with this bullet sucking thing?
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Just thought this might interest folks on here.

I find it pretty deceitful to have a trailer that is clearly a much higher resolution than the final game.
The actual graphics are just 240p, and how they get upscaled, I dunno. Does the game actually run in 480p or 480i or something?

This could come from the PC demo that ran in 800 x 600 mode.

It's from the release trailer on Rene's youtube account, which also links to the dreamcast game in the Hucast store. So yeah, no excuse imo.

And do they even have plans to release this on PC?

This might be construed as a bit of shameless self-plugging but I reviewed the game myself and covered a number these complaints. All of the mainstream sites that covered Redux (see Joystiq's review) didn't really have much perspective on the game's history or the genre for that matter and were full of generic genre platitudes. In fairness these are people that were supplied with review copies rather than investing in a misleading product.

Most of the YouTube reviews seemed shockingly inaccurate too (the ones I saw didn't play far enough to find/notice the extra level) and were mainly Dreamcast collectors that shelved the game as soon as they bought it without offering any insight into its quality.

I guess they were all following the "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all" philosophy.

Anyway, the review:

Good review. I totally overlooked that they said they will have a steam port, so that at least is decent, and I guess all backers will get that as well. That said, the collector baiting and pandering to a captive audience (Hucast as well as NG:DEV) and delivering unpolished products is pretty low.

The Crimzon Clover comparison, while true, does not really hold, because I do not think that NG:DEV spends 5+ years on a single project. Then again it was Yotsubane's first game, and I think he said now it would take him perhaps 1.5-2 years from scratch.

I personally think that there simply is a lack of care and understanding of game design, and the focus is more or less on exploiting a captive retro enthused audience. Might sound harsh, but that is what it seems like to me.

I wouldn't count on that. None of the reward tiers mention a Steam key or anything that would hint at getting anything other than the DC version of the game. After all the nonsense and frankly fraudulent advertising, giving free Steam keys to everyone who either backed the project or purchased the game otherwise from their store would work as an apology to some degree. But given RHE's track record, I'm not expecting one.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Yeah, but if you're a small developer with limited resources you make the call on how to utilise them best. I would rather they spend years on a masterpiece than churn out an under-developed game in a shorter time frame. Not to mention the fact Dux came out in 2009 and they had five years to refine it for Redux in 2014.

Yeah, they had that time, but I doubt that they used it in that way. And the other thing is that Yotsubane aka Clover TAC seems to have a very good understanding of shmup mechanics, partly due to actually playing shmups a lot and having played many different shmups, many probably in depth. I don't think this is the case with NGDEV, or Hucast.

And if you made as many shmups as they have, you would think that maybe you would take in some criticism that you get from people, many of which actually providing valid input. But I do not see that either. Overall what happens is revisions that promise to fix stuff, but still end up coming short.

Apparently Hucast isn't quite ready to get off the DUX collector gravy train just yet:
Limited Edition DUX 1.5, comes with DUX 1.1 - the original game minus the score bug.

ie, spend extra money on this here patch we should have released for free, but wait! we're going to include YET ANOTHER COPY of DUX 1.5.

90 Euros

How many copies of one game do people need? And now there's Dux, Dux 1.1, Dux 1.5 and Redux - all variants of the same thing!

Also, having looked into what glass mastering actually costs (it's cheap generally), that price is fucking outlandish and just downright scummy.

DUX1.1 is a brand new game so probably DUX 1.0 but with the blurry resolution from Redux slammed on there .

Restricted to just 300 and not a disc more to keep it special for collectors, but if enough Suckers wil.... eh , if demand is there like Ghost Blade there could be lots more .

Next up ............ Pre-Dux .

Hm, let's take a step back to the time right after DUX was released:

- Hucast tries to bring DUX to other platforms (PC/360/PS3/etc.), but completely revamped as Redux: Dark Matters. The game is made with these platforms in mind, unlike the original DUX which was made for Dreamcast. As a reward for the Kickstarter project supporters are promised a Dreamcast down-port of Redux and a bugfixed version of DUX called DUX 1.5

- Probably due to the demand for new Dreamcast software as evident by the scene's support for the Redux Kickstarter Hucast starts work on Ghost Blade

- Redux and its Dreamcast port gets delayed and misses its initial release date

- Dux 1.5 bridges the gap

- Redux gets delayed again due to problems with the Dreamcast port (graphics of the game using too much RAM at high resolution)

- Dux 1.5 Jewel Case Edition bridges the gap (presumably also testing the water whether people prefer CD cases vs DVD cases)

- The Dreamcast port of Redux finally gets released despite its problems - three months after Ghost Blade was supposed to be released. Redux 360/PS3 seems to have been canceled at this point.

- Dux 1.5 Collector's Edition tries to bridge the gap to Ghost Blade which is (re)scheduled for 10-2014.

So that's what happened I guess. Redux wasn't meant to be a Dreamcast game initially. It was meant to be a 720p re-release of Dux for other platforms. Ghost Blade is the successor to DUX. And I am really looking forward to that.

Maybe this is just my imagination, but... does anyone else think that Drunken Robot Pornography (an indie FPS / bullet hell / boss rush) has essentially the same aesthetics as Redux? I mean, its robots have a plastic, geometric style that is very similar to the enemies here.

I am also looking forward to Ghost Blade although I need to see more of it before deciding if I will be buying it.
However the handling of the Redux shipping (things arriving damaged etc.) makes me wary of dealing with HuCast/NG Dev.

I hope they prove me wrong.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Can someone please explain to me how this works? Is Redux a remastered version of Dux? How many games does this series have? If I was to buy it, what should I buy now, or wait for another release?

First there was DUX.
Then came DUX 1.5, which is pretty much the same as DUX but aimed at retards.
Then came DUX 1.1, which I don't know nothing about because I didn't bother.

DUX/DUX 1.5/DUX 1.1 are the same game with different checkpoint routines (1st one has them, others don't), different covers and boxes, progressively worse gameplay mechanics, etc.

And then there's REDUX, which is another reworking with an extra level and a f#*k you to DC kickstarter supporters, as far as I checked.

When it runs faster it's possible to "reproduce" the Scorebug. No way with the VGA Cable. The difference is the same as the difference between 50Hz and 60Hz in my opinion...

RHE wrote:I'm sure you have a NTSC system, where the bug does not appear...the games has been tested on all kinds of TVs and cables (besides UHF), and it's mainly play tested on NTSCs console and PAL consoles using VGA. And the only reason why this bug happens is because, we want to offer a better service for 50hz only Pal user. Normally 50hz games run slower, but we adjusted the speed to make it run as fast as on 60hz. Unfortunately, there's a bug on that 50hz mode. Even more unfortunately, on a CRT with RGB the game forces the 50hz mode, with that bug.
