Shoot The Core database: partial listing available

Post by mgmalheiros »

Hello, fellow shmupers!

The story is short: for the millionth time I missed the amazing Shoot The Core database made by Postman (you are the best, dude!!). So I finally decided something should be done to preserve the information that is still available today.

So I recovered all information from the HTML files archived in http://www.archive.org belonging to the database. The last archived update was in 28/jun/2009, totaling 1212 games.

Unfortunately not all pages were crawled and indexed by the Internet Archive, so that only 775 game entries could be recovered, which amounts to 64% of the total. The images were not available from the archive.

The linked file contains a CSV file, that is a simple text listing where the columns are separated by ";". Just import into any spreadsheet and set the semicolon as the separator. Do not use "," (comma) as a separator, as this character appears within the game details.

http://ensino.univates.br/~mgm/misc/sho ... isting.zip

Note that I used all info from all archived pages, so for some games only older information was available. I fixed mismatches in the title and description fields, but for everything else, different texts were kept, separated by '|'. That is, if two entries for the same game (from different pages) had distinct links, both links were kept in the listing.

The Python code I used to extract and sort all info is included in the "extract.py", and can be used freely. If someday the full database comes available again, the full content can be recreated by saving all title pages (0-9, A, B, ...) and running again this script. Let's hope!

Regards to all,
Marcelo

I could give a shot at copying the content to http://shmupswiki.com. Infact I will.

I'll help with this once I finish my current assignment at work, if the need still exists in that time. I work with databases, so it would be like I'm almost somewhat doing my job.
Why is it called the Vic Viper/Warp Rattler? Because the Options trail behind it in a serpent-like fashion, and the iconic front fins are designed to invoke the image of a snake's fangs.

I'm first just getting everything into something I can read better. From there, lets see what we got. I'll start from http://shmups.co.uk/index.php5?title=Sh ... re_project so I can read this file better.

Hello!

I'm happy the listing is being helpful!

As a hint, after you load the CSV file into a spreadsheet (like Excel or LibreOffice), you can sort by any column, like title or game type. Then you can resave the file with the new sort order.

Note also there are several tools that convert data from CSV to HTML ou Mediawiki tables. I've not tried the following site, but it maybe be useful for uploading the listing to ShmupsWiki:

http://area23.brightbyte.de/csv2wp.php

The conversion process should be easy when I get there. The biggest issue I'm running straight into is a lot of the sites that were linked to are blacklisted and I have had to whitelist them all. That is going to slow things down quite a bit.

(Update) I split the content into 8 parts for now, while I get the information to the pages, and then will be formatting it all, then I am debating if it should be one page or split up some how (the 8 parts is temporary).

(more comments)... It is a shame most links don't work. I have a few of these games on my computer. I am debating if shmups wiki could use a third party free file host site (I perfer esnips) to host games. It would be only for games that are small enough.

Got them in a txt file now. TY

I think there are games on that list missing in spreadsheet. At this point I'm getting the spreadsheet onto the wiki, but after all that, I can go through the list and add those.

Hi,

yesterday I once again (after a few years) search for information about the lost STC Content, and found this Thread. Now I have merged the information from mgmalheiros and Postmans Lists. Also I added some new Pc Shmups I know from and added some games from my old STC backup list (dont know the date I made this backup, at that time there were 1082 games on the STC database). So, if I merged all that, I have a totally of 1311 Games in the list (complete sorted and removed double entries).

Maybe somebody find the list helpfull I uploaded it here: http://www.fileuploadx.de/471046

My old STC backup lists were sorted by genres (horizontal, vertical, fixed etc), like the order on the STC page. Maybe somebody wants this lists too, I uploaded it here: http://www.fileuploadx.de/690093

Hi, fuzzi23!

Good news you got more information from the old STC Database! And thank you for merging the three sources together!!

However, right now I cannot download the XLS file; it seems corrupted...

I'm hoping to see the update list soon. :-)

Marcelo

Hi Marcelo,

I edited my former post. Now the file is upped on fileuploadx, hope now it works for you, let me know if not. I also do a little fine tuning on the list (added some new games, delete the games from postmans list with the "no shooter" attachment). Dont know how long my file outlasted on fileuploadx. Maybe you have a better alternative, so you can upload my file then.

Regards

This is still by far the most detailed list of what remains of the site. I'm glad this exists.

Does anyone have any more data on it? I was trying to check archive.org, but that stored down only the first pages for each letter.

Well Shmups Wiki has returned, so now the project to archive the information shall go on again. The end product from the project will be a two way system for going through what is found. The table database will be one option, and I also am going to aim for a "Classic version, which will be more built like the old website with Sections being A, B, C and so on. I have recovered some of the screen caps to the website now too. And many links were archived (and games in many sites that archived still download and work!), so the goal will be to provide that info on the wiki. Expect some developments in the coming days. I really want this to happen, and now that the wiki is back, I'm going for it.

fuzzi23 the links are dead (being over 9 months old I'm not surprised), could you re-upload that file one more time for me, so I can look at it?

Yes things are happening. Take a look at the Project thus far on the Shmups wiki.

What do you'll think so far?

Will the finished listings have pictures of the games? There's quite a few games I've played before but can't remember the titles for the life of me.

Ultimately there will be two different versions of the archive.
-"Table Version" database
-"Classic Version" database

The classic version is going to be my "attempt" at it. Here is the working design so far:
http://shmups.co.uk/index.php5?title=STC_page_Numbers
I am still not happy with it, and am trying out different things hoping something will sit right with me. I really would like to have the information in two or three columns to the right of the image. The images themselves I will likely have to just get by playing the games. Most games links still work. The reason the table version is first is because its naturally easier to organize information in a table. I am a fan of the classic site as well, that is why I'm going to this trouble for it. Some information may have to be added/updated by me to get it to work.

*Update* Conversion to html/wiki-markup is complete for everything Mgmalheiros put in the CSV file. Results for the "Table Version" database is somewhat formed now.

http://shmups.co.uk/index.php5?title=Sh ... e_Database

Important stuff before clicking links provided on the Table...
Notes: I want to warn people using this page that among other things, links sometimes go to questionable location. I advise having a updated Anti-Virus service before clicking links. Many links don't work, and others somewhat work. "Link"s with quotes are added by me (Devilmanozzy) as I may have found links that either work better or have been fixed. Sometimes they are to warehouse type sites, and while I don't like them, it is in some cases the only way to get the game in question these days.
Anyways, for those that don't understand the wiki-table:
Image

So it has its positives. The page is a bit big tho.

Plans: I'm still adding in games listed that postman listed earlier in this thread. I am also converting game titles to lower case. This will make converting them to links much easier later.

Hi devilmanozzy,

sorry for answer so late but I don't take a look at Shmups Forum for a long time. If anybody wants the list later if it's again offline, send me an PM and I will upload it again. OK, here are again my merged new List: http://www.file-upload.net/download-772 ... e.rar.html

And here are my old STC lists sorted by genre: http://www.file-upload.net/download-772 ... r.rar.html

If the links don't work let me know and I will upload it elsewhere. :)

Hey, and big thanks for your great work!

Both files are downloaded on my computer, and the one is being put together to merge with the list already on the site.
