What is your favorite shmup music?

Makes me try to remember some other really good piano arrangements of shooter music... the only one that's coming to mind now is the Psyvariar 2 OST's version of "Asteroid" from the original game's soundtrack. Also has an incredible chiptune tribute to the Star Soldier games' music hidden at the very end. (edit: looks like the uploader chopped out the minute or so's silence beforehand)

Axelay has already gotten a lot of love in this thread, but I just wanted to point out that OSTation recently uploaded HD-quality rips of the entire soundtrack(?) to youtube. This is my first time seriously listening to the soundtrack, and it's absolutely enchanting! There is an unusual range of instruments used here, which gives the game a deep, nuanced sound uncharacteristic of it's era. It's quite different from many other shooting games. Rather than shorter, adrenaline-oriented loops, the soundtrack is more about an atmospheric sense of drama and tension. The level of composition is quite refined even compared to other 16 bit games. I think you could quite easily replace the soundtrack of dark adventure or role playing game with Axelay's and the sound would still be entirely appropriate. Very cool.

the Image fight nes version was a shmup of my childhood!!!!!!!! maybe i played it in 1993 ( 8 -9 years )since that years i loved NES osts and today i still love the "nes music style" of videogames.

i heard the same songs in Image fight arcade ( and i played it but not too much) and has good great songs...we can notice the diference between arcade power and nes power.......but................... loose loose loose ....errr...i preffer the nes version...with its old style xD i

Gunhed has to be one of the most flashy launch titles of all times. Not only the graphics look stunning for a first gen title, but also the music and explosions (at least emulated) sound more powerful than pretty much everything else on consoles at the time. I guess the amp in early models of the system wasn't great, though.

OSTation is on a roll! This time, they have uploaded the entire Area 88/UN Squadron soundtrack in high quality. People seem to have mixed opinions about this game, but if we're just talking about the music, I think this game is definitely packing some quality tunes. I believe this is the arcade version of the soundtrack.

The Akai Katana FM Sound Collection is hot! This actually isn't the NES remix of Akai Katana I was expecting (though that would be awesome too), but remixes made with FM synths. Some of the tracks have a very Hyakutaro Tsukumo Technosoft-ish vibe going on, which makes them doubly awesome.
Favorite tracks are currently Tsubazeriai (boss), Koiguchi (st2), and Kaerituno (st4).

Also have the Seisou Kouki Strania Original Soundtrack going too. G-Rev have always made good music for their games. The Side Vower tracks are especially good.
