Hello from the Bay Area, finally decided to join this site after lurking for quite a while.

Apart from playing a few random shmups (whose names I don't remember) when I was younger, I'm relatively new to the genre. I'm pretty bad at them (I have yet to even come close to a 1CC), but they are still loads of fun. There's nothing quite like piloting a small ship, blowing the crap out of everything on the screen, and dodging massive amounts of bullets.

My interest in shmups is mainly in the Saturn era at the moment, but lately I've been playing a few arcade shmups via MAME. I also want to explore some PS2 shmups (mainly DDP DOJ and Psyvariar 2) when I can afford to.

Hi all :D Like many I'm sure, it's been a long time coming for me to sign up here. Honestly, in a way, I think I've just avoided it, as it's probable that in doing so, I may neglect things like working, lol.

I'm located in in West Palm Beach, FL, where I own an arcade repair shop, as well as op cabs on location. Ever since I was a kid, it's all I ever wanted to do, so in college, I started buying cabs and learning how to work on them. I swear by Sega's hardware, and am quite regular on the killercabs & seganaomi forums.

There's no way I could start listing off games, as it would surely be a bit redundant in this thread, lol. The bottom line is, I love shooters with all my heart. Period. And I've got to say, am pretty excited about getting involved in a community that does as well. I nearly cried when I read in the board rules "...games like Rez, Metal Slug, are not considered shooters..." Don't get me wrong, I love those games, but that statement was, quite possibly, the most beautiful thing I've ever read, lol. Thanks for having me, and I definitely look forward to getting involved and getting to know you guys - :D

Greetings proud shmupers of the world!
I'm a 20 years old norwegian junir rating currently doing my sevice for king, country and the glory of the flagg. I've been playing video games since I was five but did'nt really get into shoot 'em ups before I got a Dreamcast about one year ago so in a way I'm pretty new to the genre, but it has quickly grown to become my favorite.

Other interests include football (that's association football obviously since I'm not an American), comics, animation and languages.

Hello everyone, i guess i should introduce myself in this thread.

I am now 26 living in the middle of the forests of western Illinois in a giant house alone with my cat and my games. I mostly play here on mame but also have various consoles around my house including a dreamcast, a saturn, NES, plus an old colecovision! :P

My shooter life started with Zanac on the NES when i was a wee lad, and it had me in a rage early on. but a fun rage! The first game I actually 1CC'ed was U.N. Squadron on the SNES. (and i still love it today) I have been playing shooters ever since. Currently trying to 1CC dodonpachi. Can get to last Boss on the first loop, but it is all downhill from there.

I have been lurking on this forum for quite sometime, and just recently registered and now i humbly make my first post.

Gday,

I'm a new member to SHMUPS from Brisbane, Australia. Always been into the shooters since my young gaming days in the early 90's. I think my first taste was my Dad hiring me R-Type on Master System in probably 1992 and my best mate who had Fire Shark on Mega Drive.

Only just started to realise the depth/awesomeness/cult following of the genre, and like many have fallen in love with the Cave games, so I've just built a PS2 based arcade cab primarily for SHMUPS. Look forward to learning alot from you guys :)

Hi,

I'm Matt ,I live in PA. My first shooter was 1943 on nes, and for years it was really the only one I really knew about. Then one day about 4 years ago, my brother was playing through it, and I thought, "there must be more games like this". I saw a picture of Dodonpachi in a game mag, I think it was Game Informer in the "strange Japanese games" section, so I searched the internet and discovered MAME. I got hooked on Dodonpachi, as did my brother. I soon found this site, and relized how many shooters I could get for my Saturn, so I went on a spending spree for a while, also bought a Japanese PS2 and a 20" LCD for TATE. My only 1cc so far is MUSHA on genesis, someday I'll have more (I hope).

Hello,

My name is Mike. I have been lurking on this forum for a while and joined several months ago. I don't post much...most everything I need to know I find by searching, reading, and learning.

My first shooter was many years ago - Galactic Crusader on NES and then UN Squadron on SNES. My tastes in gaming changed much over the years...lots of imports and modding during the PSX/DC days and then somewhat of a break for the next few years. In '06 I got back into things and dug up all the consoles I've kept over the past 20 years....which now is in the 20-25 range. Discovering Ikaruga early last year (yes I know...waaayy late), I was blown away.....and then I heard about a company called "Cave" (lol) and I have since never been the same. Because of this newfound obsession, my Dreamcast was being played much more regularly. Then I purchased a JP Saturn for shmups...then I dug up one of my 2 modded PS2's for ESPGaluda, DDP DOJ, Mushi, and Ibara....then I purchased a DTL-H10000S debugging station since my other PS2's were failing....then I HAD to get a Saturn PS2 pad....phew...This still was not enough, so I got a hold of a TV dedicated to TATE mode for all this. And then,..........I took the plunge and bought a Sigma Raijin supergun, which prompted the purchase of an ESP Ra.de pcb and a Battle Bakraid.

I just can't get enough. I regret wasting so many years being ignorant of this genre. Cest la vie! I'm in it now for the long haul.

Hey everyone, been wandering about but never made a proper introduction...
I got my start with 1943 on the NES, next was Vapor Trail on the Gen. I fondly remember playing that game practically everyday for months and finally beating it after tons of hours. I still don't know what the hell they say when they die in that game despite having that particular sound byte forever ingrained into my memory.
Apart from a few random shooters here and there I was ruined by RPG's and the like for the next 12 years or so. Then I had a phase were I completely abandoned all console games and played Simulations and Strategy games on the PC...that was probably the lowest point. Along the way I have owned almost every system up to the latest generation. Haven't taken the plunge on one of those yet. Anyway, how I got back into it all was picking up a DC and getting tons of import games. Initially I was into retarded stuff like Tokyo Bus Driver but somehow fate smiled upon me and I wound up with a bunch of shooters, namely Ikaruga, Border Down, GigaWing, Mars Matrix etc...then I found MAME and Cave, and Raizing...and I remembered why I ever loved video games to begin with. Thanks for reading my story, that is all. Oh and I just bought my first Cab about a month ago. :o

Hi all. My name is Josh. I've been gaming for...around 24 years, give or take a year. Until the past few years though, I never played SHMUPS to much extent. They were both intimidating and intriguing at the same time, but my experience with them was, for the most part, relegated to an occasional trip to the arcade. Over the past few years, I've managed to play a few, but I've often given up on them out of frustration.

But like anything gaming for me, it's been a thorn in my side. So, I've decided to sit down and put more effort into the genre. My collection is meager, but like all things, it has to start some where.

Happy gaming!

Hey there. Volteccer Jack here. The double-C is pronounced like a K, and yes, it's deliberately misspelled. I can only assume I'm a stereotypical American white person, but I haven't heard many white people jokes, so who knows? I live in southern Pennsylvania, which for a fan of arcade games sometimes feels like the Planet of the Apes, except that I'm not as attractive as Charlton Heston. 8)

Gradius III was the first game to really hook me, and teach me what's so great about shmups. This is probably due to the fact that the game prevents you from continuing, and thus I couldn't coin-feed through it like pretty much every other arcade game I had staggered blindly through up to that point. Instead I had to finally sit back, put down the controls, and admit that the the game had effortlessly destroyed me. Which was the first step towards actually getting arcade games. I still can't beat the second level of Gradius III.

My two favorite shmups so far are Battle Bakraid, and R-Type Leo. And yes, I have played Battle Garegga, Batrider, and all the other R-Types. Not all that long ago, I started looking into Cave's shooters, mostly because of this Ketsui review. I just got Donpachi the other day, but it's already looking like it might be the best arcade game I've ever played, and one of my favorite video games, period.

Oh yeah, and I suck. A lot. :( Vasara is the only shmup I can beat on a single credit so far, and I can't even beat the first level of Flying Shark.

Hey all! I have been lurking here for a while and have idled in the IRC channel too, so I thought it was about time to sign up. I'm just getting into the whole hobby arcade PCB scene and what not, but have of course been an avid video game lover since I first set foot in an arcade when I was a kid. In regards to Shmups, I guess I am the kind of person who have always enjoyed them, but never really taken the step to investigate the whole genre thoroughly. I'm 24 and from Copenhagen, Denmark... and a history student.

Aloha. Like many others I have been lurking around these forums for some time now but have just recently decided to become more active. I've been gaming since the late 80's/early 90's and if I remember correctly...I believe Raiden was the first shmup I really got into. It was either shmups or 2-D fighters for me back then...and I seem to have come full-circle after 15 years.

Ever since picking up my import PS2 I've been having a blast playing games similar to my past but with their modern twists and challenging gameplay its been hard to turn back :) If only more of my friends could understand the thrill it is to play these games...but alas...this forum pulls their dead weight for 'em ;)

I live in Southeastern PA, I have a degree in Art Education, but I work as a child care worker for a teenage shelter. Lately I've been playing DDP-DOJ, Gunbird 1&2, & Mushihimesama. As hard as DDP-DOJ is, I can't help but coming back to it time after time...the damn thing is just that solid. I look forward to playing in STGT and submitting some very mediocre scores ;) Cheers!

Hey, Names PieOrDie, I played galalga from a young age but just really started getting interested in real shmups. I played 19XX War against destiny, then progear. I just used as many credits as i could get ahold of, until i googled progear and stumbled upon the nocontinues blogspot. The idea of not using more than one credit just blew my mind, i was changed.

My new goal in life is to try and 1cc anything, but recently I've been playing dodonpachi. I am not the best at these games concidering i just started. but i can make it to like the 3rd stage boss in dodonpachi, but i get wrecked. i should probably use bombs and not go for score considering i cant beat it yet.

I am going to make a mame cab soon but currently i am just playing with a ps2 controller.

I enjoy shmups a lot now and i hope to get better and one day be up there with the pros here.

Peace
~PoD

Thanks Bullet. I am still working on improving my skills in general, I got up to level 4 in dodonpachi, but then i got stomped. But the only way to advance is practice right.

True dat. The funny thing is, it can be helpful to adopt very non-1cc actions in order to get that 1cc. Save state practice can really cut down on the time it takes to clear the game by letting you focus on improving your problem areas. You shouldn't do it right away, but there's a point at which you should consider it.

You might also try to 1cc the first loop of Batsugun (Special Version) first. It's quite a bit like DDP; made by the same team, in fact, before they went on to found Cave and create Donpachi and its sequel. I'm not saying you shouldn't stick with DDP if that's what you're interested in, but it can be good for morale to 1cc a game, albeit an easier one. Makes you realize "hot damn, this isn't impossible."

Anyway, enjoy the forum.

Hello there, I'm Ben from the UK, a big games fan, started off young on the home computers, moving on to an Amiga, then Snes, and most consoles. These days I've whittled down to Snes, Dreamcast and a Jamma Arcade Cab. I have a few shmups for it, Thundercross 1 & 2, Air Buster, Sonic Wings to name a few.
Look forward to reading through all the various threads here.
Cheers

Anyway - hello Ben. Are you around London? If so, you should check out the Casino Arcade thread in the Shmupmeets section here. there's a nice selection of shooters in the arcade, and a really friendly group of forum regulars.

Plus we just got Muchi Muchi Pork installed!

hey mort do you have any idea how to save on donpachi, on either of them it just says something about timers being abnormal. I would love to practice the next levels but i can't save it. I will try out batsugun like you said.

IIRC, you want to use MAME 0.99 to get save states in Cave games. Later versions complain about anonymous timers.
