Color me interested now.

Just a note, as much as I love Battle Garegga (I consider it the best shmup ever made), please don't make the bullets super hard to see.

It's nice that there's another non-jp shmup developer that even knows what a superplay is :P

From back on page one:
4. Our primary goal is to develop a game which is accessible to the newcomers and SIMULTANEOUSLY to implement solid gameplay mechanics which justify recording a superplay DVD.
Anyway, Garegga art influence = good. Bring the blinding shrapnel and mechanical beasts from hell please. Einhander gameplay influence = very good, bring the weapon rack. R-Type? So long as it's not an R-Type Final "quantity > quality" influence, it all sounds good.

A lot. It gives a good hint about devs and how deep they delved into the genre. Granted, this doesn't necessarily mean that the game will magically be great once it's finished,
but it surely shows that the developer in charge either did his research or even better, plays the games in this genre in a similar way like "we" (the fans) do.
It surely got me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, much more interested in it after reading that post.

I think it's great and more than a little weird that developers are paying attention to the forum now. I guess being as niche of a genre shooters are and that this forum is one of the few places where the games are actually constructively critiqued, it only makes sense that devs and publishers would start to pay some attention. Regardless, I like the sound of where this game is headed.

Which is prefect because that's what he's best at. I'm glad to see competent and well researched developers tackling the actual gameplay.

Good to see Suda 51 still has a job - Killer 7 and No More Heroes are awesome. Will watch the development of this game with great interest.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

So this is going to be a horizontal scroller, then.

Not my usual playing orientation but it does sound decent.

I would hope for more Garegga than R-Type in the scoring system though

Will I be getting this - not untill / unless I get the system it's on (assuming DLC I guess). I'll likely get it if / when I have a system though. Doesn't really scream "dream game" (kind of tepid on the R-Type gameplay, but then again I'm still slugging away at Gradius Galaxes...) but my faith it's being competently done seems well-placed!

NMH 1 and 2 both had shmup minigames which were good. Not spectacular but competent. Certainly no euroshmups. I'd enjoy seeing a full shmup by Grasshopper, because they clearly love the genre and know what they're doing.

I seriously hope this turns out to be a decent shmup, but I'm not convinced yet

Considering Einhander is the closest commercial Japanese shmups have been to "euroshmupish" mechanics this might not be the best idea, as it will be really easy to overdo it and end up on the wrong side.

Also, if it ends up not being a euroshmup indeed, this would be a first in something like 25 years of western shmup development, lets hope this game finally breaks the pattern.

Waht  :P

The fun(?) of Einhänder is 80% presentation and 20% gameplay. Aka the Square Formular(TM). So yes it is a Euroshmup

I wonder...

If having 80% presentation and 20% basic* gameplay makes a game a Euroshooter...

...does this mean that Vagrant Story is a EuroRPG?

Gasp! This game will have a forest with fake snow and complicated maze warps.

* Just a wrong assumption - never played Einhander but for the sake of argument let's go with this.

I think of euroshmups as nasty, gritty, brown messes. It's true that Einhander has great presentation.

It's funny focusing on it when R-Type was mentioned alongside it. If you think there is anything bad about the game, it can be traced back to R-Type. Einhander is R-Type with the awfulness sanded down, a decent scoring system and with influences from better games. It is more than "rad looking bosses", so it at least has more going for it than R-Type.

I hope you're not implying that Einhander is better than R-Type.

Ahoy again,

Finally, some (good) news: the game is almost finished content wise, will be playable at Gamescom 2011 and at the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, although in both cases behind closed doors. The first teaser trailer is coming _before_ the event.
