How are the Psikyo Shooting Collections on the PS2?

Post by Vyxx »

Not interested in getting any of them (I own all of the ports on other systems), but I told my friend who doesn't have an account here that I'd ask, since he has an import PS2 and is getting into Shmups. He was looking to buy all 3. How does say, Strikers 1945 & Strikers 1945 II compare on the PS2 to say...the Saturn versions (which I own)? As long as there aren't any real game breaking glitches/slowdown/whatever I'm sure he'll probably buy them.

The Strikers pack is the worst of the bunch. Don't recall all of the problems with it but both the PS1 and Saturn ports are far better. Sengoku Ace/Blade and Sol Divide/Dragon Blaze -collections, however, are quite good and I'd recommend your friend gets those two and the Strikers games for PS1 if he wants 'em.

Also, the Gunbird collection is passable, but it has in-game loading when the characteres start talking (more noticable in GB2). Not a game-breaker as such, but kind of annoying.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Thank you very much for the quick reply, and I was actually going to ask about the Gunbird collection haha.

Cheers!

I think the PS2 port lacks the right resolution or something like that. IIRC it has no save option or something as well.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Sengoku Ace & Sengoku Blade are interlaced, upscaled and filtered, BUT in this case it's not as bad as it sounds. They still look nice in tate mode and play better than on MAME (even with this recent MAME hack).

If I remember correctly, you can't save your scores on the strikers port.

Yeah, you can't save in the Strikers collection.
And if you die your last life (at least in Strikers 1), your shot button triggers the CONTINUE. Really, really annoying.

I was playing the Sengoku collection last weekend.

I always get a kick when I have to use an "insert coin" button before I can start the game. Tate mode works fine for Ace (not needed for Blade). There's a practice mode that lets you choose your starting stage and powerup level. Overall not bad.

It doesn't have any of the extras from the Saturn version of Sengoku Blade (extra voice acting, extra jiggling cleavage cutscenes, fan art collection, etc). But if you're only interested in the gameplay it's pretty much the same, plus you get Ace on the same disc.

Sengoku Blade on Saturn also has proper 240p display, whereas PS2 version is interlaced.

Same for the other two Psikyo collections.

Can 240p (or 480p) be forced for any of them to sort this out?
