Ketsui Death Label open translation

Post by z3tzilla »

I'm making a translation of Ketsui on the DS. It's a shame there's no english version out there... Right now the top priority is the "Teach me! IKD-san!!" but i'll also translate everything else.

It's an open translation, so if you can help me with translating the text - that would be great.
I've already used the translation from this thread in the EVAC Report section, so it's already translated.

Here are the spreadsheets with the text:
In-game Menus
EVAC Report panels
Teach me! IKD-san!! Lessons 11-20
Teach me! IKD-san!! Lessons 21-30
Teach me! IKD-san!! Lessons 31-40

Ketsui Death Label Images: These are the images from the game that contain japanese text (it's mostly the story of the game, which is interesting too).

Translation progress:
(as of 07.2013)
-1- EVAC report. 100%
-2- "Teach me! IKD-san!!". 100%
-3- Main menu. 100%
-4- Images. ~50%.

Releases:
Ketsui_v01.zip - first public version.
Ketsui_v02.zip - second version.

This is an excellent and worthy project. I could certainly use this, as this is almost exclusively the game I play for the platform. . . and I play it a lot. One of the few things that have inhibited my enjoyment include the "Chinese symbols" in the Evac Report.

The only thing that's changed in the rom is the game font (and, obliously, the text) in order to fit english text into the game. And with japanese it's allways like there's two japanese kanji which translate into 6 english words, have fun fitting those, huh.

I try to test the patched rom on 3 saves: empty save, that's being created when you start the game for the first time, my save from the ds and the *ahem* cheat save, since i don't have all the IKD-san lessons unlocked as well as some EVAC reports. So far there weren't any problems with any of those.

On a side note, those IDK-san lessons are pretty fun to watch, even without understanding a word they say. It seems like developers really enjoyed making those. But those lessons also provide lots of information about game mechanics, story, high-scores and some other things.

As an aside, I always wondered why the Loop-2 replay on the cart wasn't in vertical orientation.

hmm...while we're talking about altering game data, can that be fixed, or is the resolution of that video really that ridiculously small?

pretty awesome! it will be nice to finally see what IKD was making all those goofy faces about. if you could include your cheat save with the rom patch that would be awesome as well.

Ouch, you beat me to it, I finished ripping the images/sprites/whatnot from the game yesterday :)
A question: are you text editing on a whole-ROM basis or is there a text file? I haven't really looked (just ripped everything and hacked in the new font for full "plain" latin alphabet), but I didn't see any Nintendo standard format for it.

Also, did you notice the full map for stage 5 and all the unused enemy/bullets sprites? Taking a gamble, maybe they tried a full porting of EVAC industries as the original Extra mode.

joeks -- ace job on the lettering. Stays true to the original. I'd play around with the spacing in 'ask,' but that's picking nits.

Almost done now, maybe a little finetuning with the outline width and making the letters just a bit more pixelated.
Then, only subtitle remaining. Anyone knows the translation for that?

Those videos are in .mods format, mobi clib video codec. I don't know any media player that suport it, so i can't really say about their resolution.
All the videos except for the Loop-2 were recorded from the DS, so they look okay on the top screen, but the Loop-2 were made from the arcade that had a much bigger screen. They could either show it on both screens to compensate for that or fit that into one screen.
brokenhalo wrote:if you could include your cheat save with the rom patch that would be awesome as well.
I don't think that's possible, those are action replay codes. Besides, almost every flash card support them.
Evrain wrote:A question: are you text editing on a whole-ROM basis or is there a text file? I haven't really looked (just ripped everything and hacked in the new font for full "plain" latin alphabet), but I didn't see any Nintendo standard format for it.
The text is in .bin files, along with the program code, pointers and some variables. The text is uncompressed, and it's in Unicode(LE). So you can get the text out by copypasting the text block into unicode text file. But i've written a small program that did it all for me.

Getting the text back to the ROM was a bit harder. The text wouldn't fit. And you can't change the size of those .bin files, because then you'd need to go and recalculate all the pointers in every other file. And that's impossible to do. So i had to use the oldest trick in the book - put 2 english letters into 1 font tile.
So now getting the text back by hand would be quite a task, because you would need to redraw the font and put every pair of characters by hand.
That's why i've written another program. It takes the game font, gets those .bin files, gets the new script from text file, redraws the font, puts the new text back into the ROM and recalculates all the pointers that point to the text.

Thanks for the compliments, but i only did one image so far. z3tzilla is the one who deserves all the credits of this project ofcourse.

If any of you can help translate the Kanji on the images inside the .zip file from first post, i can create new images for that. Would love to get started on that :) Thanks so far.
