david, I think some of the confusion comes from the fact that the game is advertised to support VGA, when you feel it looks bad in that mode. It's because some DC games don't support VGA at all, so when a game does support it, it usually has the VGA icon for it on the back of the packaging. This is the case even if the game looks better in S-Video or standard composite. It's not false advertising and many sprite-based and/or lower resolution DC games are in the same boat. Please don't blame NGDT or the game itself, because this is how *ALL* developers do it on the Dreamcast.

If you have any RCA cables (they are cheap), just use them for FS instead. Doesn't your VGA box allow you to switch modes without having to unplug cables? (the official DC VGA box does allow this)

Your TV being an LCD isn't the issue. Despite what many people say, I actually prefer LCD for retro games to CRT. I hate scan lines. Everything from Atari 2600, to NES, Genesis, MAME, Dreamcast etc... I prefer it all on LCD. But VGA and even S-Video can make some older games look worse, not better. This is true on CRT and VGA. Which you prefer is up to you, but in the case of FS, composite cables will definitly help versus VGA. Don't worry about your TV.

Sorry to bring this up again...

Ok... on topic.

I really like how the different modes have different weapons, scoring, point items etc... It makes it fun to play all 4 modes rather than only the one that fits my skill level.

I can beat levels 1,2,3 on original mode on 1 life. Then level 4 kicks my butt. Can get to level 5 boss on available credits but can't even get to level 6 yet. Practice...

I really like the first form of the level 3 boss and how it spins around the screen forcing you to alternate between forward and rearward weapons. The way you have to dodge while circling is my favorite part of the game so far.

Sorry, but I don't agree. It isn't necessarily true that an LCD TV = crap. But it is far too often the case even with good brands and models that supposedly review well that the TV is in fact the limiting factor for image quality with older sources and lower resolutions in particular. I wasn't implying that he had a POS because he had an LCD, or anything other than a CRT for that matter, but I do think the evidence is clear that, given his complaint, his TV is in fact the limiter with his experience.

I don't have this game yet, but if my experience with Last Hope, Dux, etc. hold here I think you can expect an image that is about the same for 640x480 as it were for 320x240, just linedoubled and synced for VGA. That's about as well as you can expect and a lot of people get upscalers to simulate this effect. He's not getting scanlines from it. But this is the essence of his complaint.

It's probably already been said but I think it's worth re-iterating. The soundtrack to this game is absolutely AMAZING. Those guys did a really fantastic job with the music.

I agree. Awesome music. Maybe slightly too "trance-y" for me but it of course works for a shooter.

I don't really know very much about TVs, so I will definitely defer to you guys on visual problems and the reasons for them. But I have always owned CRTs and a couple friends who are more into modern video technology than I am (and bought nice HD CRTs when they got their current gen consoles years ago), and I just got my first LCD on Christmas and all of my games of every generation look better on it (in my opinion). No more scan lines = eye candy. I'm sure my CRT wasn't top of the line, but I am used to CRTs of various price levels. My LCD is entry level, and it blows CRTs away, again, IMO.

I have also played many games on LCD PC monitors, and they have always looked amazing. It may be cheap tech being forced to the public who are brainwashed into accepting it and paying more for it... but it just plain looks better to me. The scan lines of (even top end) CRTs just bug me more than any of the problems reported with LCDs.

How sometime looks is about as subjective as it gets. Eye of the beholder, and so on.

Normally I would be the type of person to shun the spreading of LCD tech which supposedly works worse with the older consoles that I prefer, but I just can't get past the fact that I prefer the type of image LCD has for games. It's how I wish games looked all along...

Sorry to derail the thread again.

But the point is that FS looks f'n awesome on my LCD with composite cables. Can't speak for the higher quality connections. Don't need em. Have S-video cables for my Saturn and a VGA box for my DC. Don't use them. They make the consoles look worse for more of the games I play than they make look better, IMO, on CRT and LCD. I'm sure that opinion is pretty unpopular too. Haven't tried FS on the VGA box, and don't care to try it.

For current gen consoles, component cables make more sense.

I connected my NES and SNES to my $750 40" Samsung LCD with RCA cables. They looked like caca. I blame the upscaler in the TV. I hooked up my Windows 7 PC to it with HDMI and everything looks great. DVD's playing on my PS2 with RCA cables look like crap on the LCD. Tried the component cables and got a blank screen. DVD's playing in Windows 7 with HDMI look GREAT on the LCD. And that's just using Windows Media Player.

My copy came today. Only took about a week for shipping. I've only gotten to play it for maybe a half an hour so far, but I enjoyed it on my first play. My LCD makes it look a bit crappy, so I can't wait to try it on a CRT. Like someone said, the music is a little to trance-y, but I loved the part where there were gold cubes that were enemies. It's like an inverse Mars Matrix. Load times are a little weird, too, but you can't expect perfect interaction between hardware and software in an indie game.

As a humorous side-note, I found a "bonus" mode during my second play today. At the main menu open the disc cover and select a mode to play. Enjoy!

It's the sort of thing you have to see. And I put "bonus" in quotations for a reason.

Aside from teasing this bonus mode, rest assured that the game is a blast. I was surprised at how fast I managed to pick it up and just play. Definitely more to my liking than Last Hope.

Shame on you David, shame on you! How dare you compare two entirely different shmup games which play absolutely different? Because if you're as intelligent if you think you are, explain THOROUGHLY why does it pale compared to Crimzon Clover though YOU DO KNOW it's way too different to compare. If you don't explain it, your statement is worthless.

seriously dude

My copy finally arrived today. As the day before I was able to get a few hours of pink bullets in, I find it a bit tough to go from oldschool hori to a more modern style shmup. The game itself is polished and all, and I think most people will enjoy this more than pink bullets, unless you have such a softspot for the oldschool hori like myself. It comes off as quite an achievement to make a neo geo game look so good.

The environments don't seem to be as much of a focus as they were in last hope. Background do look great and all, but repetitive. There are fancy bullet patterns that any mars matrix or espgaluda fan would enjoy.

So far maniac mode has been the most fun. Just started though.

Got the game today. Love the fact that it's in 240p, and the game itself is pretty good from what I've played. As others mentioned, my only real complaint thus far is the repetitive backgrounds, but it does look smooth and nice for what it is.

Hmmmm....one thing I noticed....how does saving work in this game? There doesn't seem to be any file on my memory card, and I didn't see a save option anywhere...I don't have a VMU (just a 3rd party memory card with no screen), is there something displaying on that screen that I need to do?

Not saving for you? Weird. Maybe it's the third-party memory card. I have VMU and it's fine. It's been saving my scores and settings with no problem. That's weird, though. I have no idea what would make the save fail on a third-party card.
