horror-themed shmups and horror-themed stages

Post by professor ganson »

Death Smiles and Undead Line look so great, though I haven't played either yet. What other horror-themed shmups are there out there?

The horror level in Harmful Park is one of my favorites. Can you think of others?

Is it horror-themed enough?

All those doujin games that rip off the Giger themes. I think Dark Hell and Sister Skain games? I might not remember correctly.

If memory serves the original Cotton is the most "horror-themed" - though the follow-ups have a handful of creepy moments, they're far more cutesy than the first one.

The Akira Hut and Artesneit stuff comes most immediately to mind here.

Offhand I might make mention of "Slow Mode" in Geki-Oh Shienryu - not exactly "horror-themed," but has a bunch of creepy sound effects and whatnot going on.

Phobia on the C64 is supposed to be horror themed, but I think from the sound of things you're more interested in later shmups with nice gory graphics, still a great game though, (if a little difficult)

Wings of Wor isn't horror themed, but it has plenty of horror-like influences.

To me Microcosm (Psygnosys) was horror...altough could be more properly classified as Sci-Fi or shit..depending on your gameplay likings :D :D [/i]

Chimera Beast (Mame) is an interesting one.
Also, if you like the freaky creature design in Guwange have a look at Iwanaga which has a very similar mood. Iwanaga's not a shmup though, more like Alien Soldier.

Yeah, I saw a Satan's Hollow upright at a California Extreme show one year. It was in pretty good shape despite it's 1981 arcade release from the likes of Bally Midway back in the day. ^_~

Shippu Mahou Daisakusen has a haunted house stage.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

hahaha, was going to say the same. R-Type Delta Stage 6 is pretty much a horrifying moment... The music helps.

Also, does Guwange count? I mean, come on, Spider Kitty (MEOWWW!), Baby demon and more.

Well, Parodius Da! has a horror tales stage. Oh, oh, also, Philosoma is definitely horror-thriller with a haunting storyline.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

Definitely Guwange and Death Smiles is the most "horror" shooters.

Homura also has lots of monsters and gore.

The Cotton games have a cute halloween-style.

Agreed, the art in this is great. Hidden gem? Not sure how hidden it is, but I'm loving the gameplay so far. Probably my best find in 2008.

Delta's sixth stage is my favourite, as far as creepy / horrific shooter moments go. Stage 5 is no slouch either, with the pitch blackness and various horrible things squirming around in it. But Stage 6 feels like a cross between a morgue and a filthy abattoir. It's just downright nasty.

I wish I knew exactly what Delta's story / progression was. I always put it down to the player busting into a Bydo-infested facility of some sort, but I'm not sure. Anyone know the game's background? The manual is kind of Engrish-ish, iirc.
